You Just took down install after 3.5 months...

Would you use a protein or moisturizing conditioner after the first wash? Would you do a prepoo to soften before clarifying and getting all the gunk out your hair?

I'm kinda fuzzy on the rules here, help a sister out

Detangle, pre poo, 6-8 plaits, wash, deep conditioner comb thru each plait and re braid, heat cap, air dry. Next mooring......length check!

ITA. I always do cleanse, protein DC and then moisturizing DC whether it's weekly or after a long time in extensions. I learned that the protein will help retain the moisture and I've had good results with that order.

Moisture and I would not clarify. My friend's hair tangled so bad when she clarified after taking down braids she had for 3 months. She detangled first, but I guess there was some hair left. She had to cut her hair.

I will cowash with moisture first after detangling and then clarify a few days later after another detangling session. After what she went through, I will never recommend clarifying right after such a long time in braids or an install. There is a lot of shed hair to be taken out and it is easy to miss something.

I agree with this. Last time I took extensions out, I washed my hair and scalp with the extensions still in. Then I oiled down the hair really well before I took the extensions out. I detangled, cowashed, detangled, DCd, detangled, etc. Then the following week I shampooed my hair and did my regular routine.

My hair is naturally dry so shampooing right after extensions is a no no for me. The last time I did that I thought i was going to have to cut all my hair off. And I had detangled several times before shampooing. I don't do anything drying after extensions. Detangle, detangle, detangle. Moisture, moisture, moisture.

I washed and deep conditioned my weave/leave out weekly but it's not the same as washing your hair outside of the cornrows.

Wow, see this could've happened to me last night too, I detangled with three different combs, then clarified and then washed with Shea moisture shampoo. Baby I could not comb through certain parts of my hair! I had to make an oil/ conditioner mix and let it sit for about 5-10 min and then comb through (which worked) and then I deep conditioned with a protein conditioner and then moisturizing conditioner.

This is what I was working with last night, I can't wait to relax/texlax and check my progress.

i always do protein after i remove shed hair and detangle and prepoo with oils. shampoo with a gentle shampoo. deep condition again with protein.

i choose protein because when my hair is in the weave, it is sooooo protected that it is almost over moisturized. it retains every drop of moisture from not being exposed to the elements. so when i take my hair down. i need protein to balance it out.

i prefer to clarify the next week. after i know for sure all that shed hair is gone.

I normally keep my weaves in for 10-12 weeks but this time I had so much going on and just kept putting off the takedown. It takes me about 6 hrs to get it taken down and unbraided and detangled (I do it myself since I don't want people rushing and breaking off my hair). Thing is, it's a low maintenance curly weave that's easy to blend, that was my saving grace.

I don't use a net or anything. And I washed and deep conditioned it every week (I had a small leave out section).

-put hair back in braids, then clarify shampoo, moisturizing shampoo (one braid at a time then rebraid)
-condition hair w/ protein treatment (in braids)
-DC hair with moisturizing treatment (in braids)
- apply leave-ins and wear protective style for a week or two, then back up into a weave, relaxer, etc.

The oil at the beginning step, detangling and the braids are the key. I've had to detangle my BFF hair for 2-3 hourse b/c she kept a weave over 3 months and shampooed it and it all tangled up. She was going to have to cut her hair off but I applied every product I had to loosen that stuff up!

I noticed that you do a lot of the washing and conditioning in braids, why is that?

Not kandegirl but my two textures don't like each other so when I was wigging it up after a takedown I'd wash my "loose" in sectioned braids so that my hair it wouldn't get tangled. The conditioners may make it easy to comb through but I learned my lesson the hard way about just straight washing. I can't do long stretches that others do on here for this very reason. If I'm stretching its strictly under a protective no touching at all style like a full weave or braids under a wig.

You can still do that technique in the shower. Is there a reason you don't think it would work for you.
