Hey ladies! I've been natural for 4 years and I'm pretty much over it at this point. I'm set and ready to get a relaxer next week. When I mentioned this to my "weave-tician" she gave me the serious side eye. "Oh you don't want to do that! You should stay natural." She didn't really give me any solid reasons for her opinion which led me to believe that she's just gonna miss my money! :perplexed :look:

So my question to you: If you've gone back to getting relaxers after being natural for a long time, did it have any ill effects on your hair? As of now, I'm still natural, so I'm just doing my research before I transition.

I was natural for two years [not a long time], relaxed and regretted it. I just prefer my natural texture, so I BC within 3months.
I think what contributed to my returning to natural was the fact that I went natural via a BC shortly after joining hair boards and had no first hand experience with products and technique for relaxed hair, I didn't give my relaxed hair a chance. I was a 2year veteran who had no clue how to manage my relaxed hair whose ends kept grabbing themselves. I live in Africa and no access to the products that may have helped.
Relaxers didn't damage my hair I just wasn't patient enough to learn about it. My advice is that you do lots of research and prepare to be a newbie again. I hope you enjoy going back to straight hair.

I've been natural for 39 months and i feel like i really can't take no more. I'm not enjoying my hair because i never wear it out and i just want it to be long without having to do all the work so i too am seriously contemplating relaxing my hair 80% which is more like a texlax.

I have been using certain products like sulphur base oils and minoval and i'm scared to relax/texlax because i don't know how those products will affect the drastic change.

If you do relax, i wish you well on your journey and please post pics. BTW I'M A 4B with ultra fine strands and medium density (i think).

I too went natural and relaxed and do I regret my decision? NOPE! I have since grown to BSL Thrice and on my way to MBL as we speak. Relaxed hair is what you make it and if you put in the effort to make it healthy, it will be just that.

lamaria211 was also natural and relaxed and now her hair is growing like crazy. She can also come and give a bit of insight.

All I have to say is it is your hair. Enjoy it!:yep: I for one can't wait to see your relaxer pics!:spinning:

If you want to relax - just do it! Don't allow others to dictate your choices for your mane. Rock it how you wish. Just do your research, learn how to care for relaxed hair and do tha damn thang!

I get irritated when others want to tell ME that I 'should do this or that'. Umm no boo...

There are lots of threads here which cater to the relaxed ladies (I lurk :look:..lol, even though I have no intention of going that route in the near future, I do LOVE to see swanging hair). So check them out.

your right she probably makes a lot of money doing your weaves, and if you relax you might not want to rock a weave as much. if you want to relax the relax and relax.
i was natural for 3yrs and i dont regret a moment of it, i i got to no and learn my natural hair and it was a journey. but i relaxed a few months ago and im now the happiest with my hair ive ever been. hth

Come on to the relaxed side! Love to have you.

Check out the relaxed hair sticky and post any questions you may have.

I relaxed 2 weeks ago after being natural for I guess 18 months or so. No ill effects thus far. I did a little research in the relaxed threads for technique and product recommendations and did the darn thing.

I was natural for 2 years and then relaxed in feb of this year - I have no regrets - loving the fact that I spend less time on my hair and especially wash days are pretty easy.

I think that when people achieve relaxed success after a natural stint it's more because of healthier hair practices they learned while natural than anything else.
I don't remember exactly why I started relaxing but I have the notion it was because managing my straightened natural hair after my mom resigned duty was too much for me. As I got older in HS it was silly, given my lifestyle and personality, to go out of my way to straighten my hair so I had an accidental transition. Natural hair suits me so much better.
I say do what makes you happy. Relaxer isn't my thing but if it makes you happy about your hair, go for it! :-)

Welllllll natural/the original IS always better lol

Me!!!!! I relaxed after 4 years... My hair was really suffering... You need a good stylist or someone who can relax well to help you.

Ive retained pretty much all mu length since I relaxed... I was stuck around apl then for like 2 years.... In the last 1.5 years, I'm 1 inch from MBL and on my way to make WSL before Dec.

To me, the key to success is minimizing heat, self relaxing (go and learn), figuring out a simple but solid weekly reggie (prepoo, wash, and DC, airdry) and sticking to it. PM me if you want to talk more.

You'll be okay.... Do you want to texlax or relax bone straight.

I'm going back to a relaxer next week. I've realized my hair was a lot healthier when it was relaxed. I retain length when natural just like I do when I'm relaxed. But, it's a lot harder for me to maintain my moisture when my hair is natural. And it takes me a long time to do my natural hair as well. On wash days I can't go anywhere because it takes all day to do my hair. As opposed to when I'm relaxed it takes me 45 minutes to and hour to do my hair.

At the end of the day you have to do what works before for you.

I went back to relaxed hair several years after being natural. My natural hair had damage from my glycerin products, heat damage after a one time blow dry session, colouring and a bad protein treatment from the hair salon. My hair dresser who was braiding my hair at the time suggested I get a relaxer because the crown of my hair took forever when braiding my hair.

When I first relaxed my hair after many years being natural, I regretted it at first, but then I focused on healthy hair practice and my hair has thrived.

My mother who has 4a/3c wavy hair went natural after almost twenty years and she regrets it and will cut off the relaxed hair. I think my mum was better off with natural hair. She is so low key and really isn't into this whole protein vs. moisture and all the other discipline you need to have with relaxed hair. Mum was old school with her natural, pressing it on special occasions and for daily styling using a bit of leave in which gave her hair that wavy look.

At the end of the day, it's only hair if you don't like it cut off and start over again.

Best,
Almond Eyes

I Texlaxed on 1/25/13 after being natural for 3.5 years.
So far no regrets.
You just have to be patient and relearn about how to manage chemically treated hair.
I look forward to hitting my long hair milestones again.

Good luck with your decision.

I relaxed in March after being natural for over a decade. So far I'm loving it mostly cause I took my time making the decision. My retention is the same about the same as when I was natural (though I'm texlaxed) but my wash days are significantly shorter. I say if you're ready to relax go for it.

You ladies are awesome. I LOVE hearing your personal stories with your transitions from natural to relaxed....so VERY encouraging. As of today, I'm still natural. I'm just waiting to get paid this week and I will be going back to relaxed. I cannot wait! I dropped my son off to his grandparents yesterday so that he can go to the beach for the week. I told him that the next time he sees mommy, she will no longer have her puff. He was 3 when I went natural and now he's 7. I seriously doubt he can remember mommy from her relaxer days when he was much younger.

I have decided to relax my hair on my 2 year nappiversary. I feel that I've learned so much about hair while transitioning and being natural that I can now take better care of my relaxed thresses.
