Hi ladies! I have been bunning consistently for 4 months now. I decided to flat iron my hair so I could get a trim. Well I ended up getting a cut (which I LOVE) bc my ends were torn up and I had some weird breakage in the middle...could this have stemmed from bunning? Now I have a fresh new start at APL and don't want this to happen again! Any help is greatly appreciated!

Beautiful hair honey!!! Sorry I can't be of more assistance. I don't bun more than 2 weeks at a time because if I'm not careful, they can give me a major set back.

I cannot bun for this very reason. The place at the center of my pony gets jacked. Not saying this is what happened to you but that has been my experience. Your hair looks so thick. Nice.
 
There are a couple of things you need to do if you choose to bun as your protective style:
  1. Do not bun using ponytail holders, as they will snag and break your hair off in the middle like in the picture. If your hair is long enough, (and it is), learn to bun by twisting your hair up and around like the really long-haired women do.
  2. No Sock buns or buns secured with ponytail holders or Scrunchies, for the same reasons above
  3. The best way to secure your buns are with spin pins or hair sticks, as they cause the least tension and pulling on your hair
  4. Move your bun around your head periodically--one week wear it high, next week wear it low, next week wear it to the side. That way you are not putting repeated tension on the same spot on your head, causing breakage
  5. Speaking of tension, learn to appreciate the "messy bun" look. If you are constantly snatching your hair back and trying to brush down your edges to get that "ballarina bun" look, you are going to cause damage. I like the loose messy bun look myself, and if I need a smoother, more polished look, I switch to a French braid or twist.
These are the tips that I have learned over time that have allowed me to reach almost BSL by bunning almost 90% of the time. Hope this helps. :yep:

I found wet bunning always created breakage for me. My hair does better if I blow dried in low/medium heat and then ponytail/bun for the week.
 
I guess you hair can't take wet burning, remembering your hair is at its weakest and probably had to much tension and slowly broke the ends off
 
Wet bunning can be the debil. Hair from the crown always breaks with buns no matter the location. I've tried them all in the past. Same result as yours. Perhaps your hair will do better with low or side buns.
 
I use a silk tie for my bun. In short, I bought a pair of silk pantyhose and I cut them to make a tie....I bun using the baggy method and the results have been excellent
 
I'm trying to recover from stop breakage to my crown and right at the center of my head in the back from constant bunning. That area is gets very itchy and is now tender. I think my hairpins were actually damaging my scalp as well. Try doing oil scalp massages in the areas that have breakage and try bunning with dry hair (moisturized and sealed first). I agree also that you should try loose buns and alternate your bun. My edges are also thinning too I think because of too tight bunning.
 
Buns can do it. I do buns, but I really try my best to not make them too tight. I try to bun without ponytail holders too, but sometimes they get to sloppy and don't hold. Depending on whether you are right or left handed is a factor too as I'm getting slight breakage in an area I put a great of pressure in when I twist to the right on my buns. I could be smoking crack though and just be seeing things, but… I don't think so. I haven't really had any problems, just be careful though. I also only dry bun since me and wet styled hair do not mix.
 
Start doing the southern tease bun. You can do a search for it here and it's on YouTube...no ponytail holder needed.
 
I bun a lot and don't have a breakage at the hemline. I'm really careful and follow many of the suggestions stated upthread.

brittle_hair, place a cut up satin / silk scarf on top of the bun maker to protect your hair.

and to answer the other questions

1. I only use spin pins
2. I normally wear a low bun. I alternate btw that and a high ballerina bun
3. i've never noticed if my hair grew in a "W"...but that's how my hair was lookin....(we will see in 6 months if the "W" is back!
4. I only wet bun...i don't think i twist too tight...
 
BUMP! Thank you for starting this thread bunnie82. I've noticed a lot of breakage at the crown of my head and I've been wearing buns for a few weeks at a time and I believe that might be the culprit. I'm definitely going back to twists to give my hair a rest.
 
I had a similar experience a few years ago. My ends started thinning. I used to twist my ends and then bun. Thanks for the suggestions.
 
I recently have noticed the same thing...thinning in the center of my hemline and it looks just like your picture. I've noticed SL pieces and very thin pieces in my crown and the area just above my nape. I don't secure my bun with ponytail holders but I do either twist and then wrap the hair around itself or just wrap the hair around itself without twisting...in doing this I think the pins or duck bill clips are causing damage OR it's breakage due to much dryer and heavily textured texlaxed hair in this area. I'm tempted to believe all three are the culprit and will correct each, I've already noticed a considerable amount of thickening in my crown since texlaxing and will reassess in six months as well.
 
Pony tails with my ends baggied is what got me from SL to MBL. However, I went to the Dominicans and got a Blow Out which damaged the back of my hair. That was like 3 years ago. I'm not back at BSL and I've recently started Bunning with the last 4 inches of my hair moisturized. I use the snagless scrunchies and I don't wrap my hair too tight. I also my a ponytail using a banana clip then braid the ends of of hair for a couple of minutes then unravel and viola banana clip ponytail with wavy ends. I think the problem is your hair does not like wet buns. My siggy is my hair bunned using a banana clip. I feel no pulling whatsoever when I use the banana clip.
 
Wet bunning can do that depending on the type of bun you are putting your hair in. Twist buns are the safest wet buns and if you leave them in for two or three days it creates some nice waves.
