For several months now, I've been pondering coloring my hair. I haven't done it because the last time I did (2009) my hair was so dry afterwards and then I got it pressed and it was a major setback.:nono:

I have had this in my cabinet since before Thanksgiving:

I'm probably all of .5% gray but it's mostly located in my hairline and crown so I've decided it's gotta go.

I haven't been doing much to my hair lately other than putting in a leave in conditioner and bunning it so I feel a deep conditioning session is in order.

Before coloring, should I focus more on protein or moisture?

Post coloring I'm inclined to think I should focus more on moisture, is this correct?

I currently have Aubrey GPB and Queen Helene w/ Cholesterol. Are they enough? I would describe my strands as fine.

Thanks in advance.

Are u relaxed or natural?

I have permanent color and I'm natural. It's hard work for little payoff IMHO...u have to put aside what u would've done to treat ur hair and focus on the needs of the color.

I know this doesn't answer ur question but felt it was need to know info.

I don't color but I believe it should be both. 2-3 weeks prior to coloring begin conditioning with a protein DC followed by a moisture-rich one.

APrayer4Hair, I'm natural.

At the bolded, I'm really hoping a peaceful compromise exists. I'm trying to avoid another setback.

My hair isn't broken off, splitting, etc. but it tends to be drier. From ur OP u seem to like/thrive on low mani. It's def possible but more work. I didn't do any special prep prior to color. I'm afraid of protein so I've never done more than AO GPB

ETA: how about trying a rinse first?

I use Jazzing Black Cherry (rinse) to cover my grays, and I have more than you.

If you have so little gray I agree with the other ladies, try a rinse instead of a permanent.

My hair is low porosity and probably 25% gray so I do a demi-permanent because the rinse won't take. But if you aren't low porosity there is no need to do such a harsh color job for so little gray.

@APrayer4Hair, I've used Jazzing but it didn't get the job done.

@MileHighDiva, I've tried Jazzing before actually. My grays didn't take to it well. I could just need another brand.

Thanks though.

The reviews I've read for Naturtint are mostly positive but some still said it didn't do much for their grays. Hopefully I'll be in the majority and won't have to keep searching.

I'm a color junkie myself and I gotta be honest. I personally wouldn't use a permanent dye that I've had for that long. And with what you're trying to achieve, I would probably go with a semi-permanent instead of a permanent. I don't do any protein treatments prior to dying, but I do up the moisture treatments post dye job. I haven't had any problems *knock on wood*
