In Dire Need of Help w/Afro on MBL/WL Hair

I used to wear a BAA. We used to braid our hair up, undo it, pick it out, and then use a ton of hair spray. Mine moved too.

My mom's hair is in the 3s. It takes nothing to get it straight but in the 70's she wore a fro too. She used to use big rollers on dry hair to help but she used a ton of hairspray too.

oh, I should say in regards to my post above
While both my mom and I have 3type hair, it wasn't as long as yours is now. That may be the key.

Cute pictures, this is proof as we age, our hair textures changes.

OP, I would just do very tiny (but lots of) rollers on as much shrunken hair and pick it out. It would make it airy but tight enough for the BAA look.

beautifulll hairrrr:)
my 2 cents take it with a grain of salt

leave the top down on a convertible get in and drive down the highway lil bit over the speed limit..when im in dh's drop top my hair ends up looking like the look your attempting lol
orrrrrrrrrrrrrr wash hair--use no product or lil to no product..bend over and blow dry...

My hair is still similar but I think we had different ways of caring for our hair. We didn't care about curl definition.

We used very little hair products too.
Conditioner? What's that? My hair was stripped!

Leave in? Huh?

I died when I found my first bottle of leave in. My hair became super soft and shiny. My mom used Jergens Hand Lotion to smooth my edges and baby hair. We didn't use much grease. If you could see my hair going into the puff, you'd see it was the same. Even then, she would brush my hair down and I'd have big fat waves. We just picked out the curls for the fro. I didn't realize I had curls until I found products for them.

Congrats on the big chop!! I think maybe a straw set, teased out after, with your fingers would achieve the look you want. :yep: BEAUTIFUL hair!!!!

Not sure that I can be of any help....This is an afro I did with bantu knots. I took each section down and combed through it. I had my hair shaped at the time and that helped with the roundness. My hair is mostly 4a with 3c at the nape.

See that piece at the bottom? That's the part of my hair that will NOT act right. It's soft and flops aaaaaaand it looks heat damaged in comparison to the rest of my hair but it isn't. My hair is fine and it's more peculiar now that it's longer. I have straight strands in some places... loose waves.... tight curls.... bent coils... etc. I don't fight it... I just try to work with what I've got.

BUT!!! I will rock an afro puff and wig in a minute though lol. :giggle:

@sip100 Your hair is gorgeous!! My hair is 3Bish with some 3C patches. Because of the texture and fine strands, it has to be short to resemble anything close to an afro.

Sorry I can't be of more help!!

Beautiful hair but I also think it's too long for that style. When my hair was about apl, it was huge when it was fully dry. Now that I'm almost mbl, my hair doesn't get nearly as big.

I wish you luck!

I have the same problem lady....but certain sections of my hair are tighter than others so it's virtually impossible for me to get a decent fro. and mine falls the same way yours does (thinking we have very similar textures), but I do wish you luck and if I stumble on a foolproof way to get a fro', you will be the first to know.

OMGGGG your hair is sooo long and pretty! Looks to me like you just need a protein treatment and a STEAM treatment with a good moisturizing conditioner. Steam treatments reallllly define my curls and make them more uniform and pop...every natural friend of mine who tries one steam treatment falls in love with the results....and maybe try blowdrying with a diffuser...it kinda just dries your roots and gives you lots of body...that's all i got :-) BEAUTIFUL PROGRESS!

I have the same problem, by 7 month bc is a little afro that doesn't want to stand up either. I can't wait until my hair is sl and bsl. :-(

sipp100, Hey lady! Your hair is gorgeous:love:
I have missed the ladies on the hair forum and have been busy with school. Congrats on your BC and I haven't done it yet. Still just maintaining and trimming @MBL and have hardly any straight ends anymore. I wish I could help you with your BAA, but I was never able to have one either  Mine just flopped and drooped. I have a fine texture that won't fro out even if I brush it dry with no product or when it was shorter.

sipp100 maaaaybe it's just me but i actually really like it! my hair is i guess more like 4b or c and it's only APL but my fro hangs a little lower than it used to. If you didn't mind a super tedious detangling session afterwards i would suggest washing and just letting it air dry but that causes TONS of tangles in my hair so I'm not too sure how that would be as an option. Idk if that helped any!

That's really how I wear my hair every day - kinda tired of that look. Wanted something like Beyonce's wig in Goldmember. :yep:

sipp100 your hair looks great. now my hair has never been as long as your hair is but I use to plait it and put sponge rollers in it and that is how I would get my curly bush. it is a training process to get a bush.

as far as your curls are concern it looks to me that your hair is not trained yet. you just bc so you have to do co washing more often and let your hair do it's thing. You will see the curls start to come, your hair is not finish yet and I do see come heat damage, well that is what it looks like to me in the picture. I think you will really like your curls once you tame them.

Sorry Sipp.. like almost everyone else has said... its just not gonna happen :bighug: I'm more of a 4a at apl and even I wont attempt the high puff / baa anymore because of the tangles, time it takes to detangle and it no longer sits up like its supposed to.

sigh

girl I wish I had your problem :yep: wl and wanting a fro.. psshhh!

Maybe try a bantu knot out! With really small bantu knots... I think that could work considering your texture your hair just will not do that naturally.

I wish I could help you. I can't get an afro. When I BCed the first time, back in 2005, I was able to have an afro for like 5 minutes until my hair grew out, and I had to do major manipulation to get it...so not healthy.
But your hair is great and congrats on the bc and long transition!

wavezncurlz

Thanks for the pictures - you were a cutie!
I know it's not an issue of texture, because my hair can be cottony. I guess it's just past the length to make a 70's fro possible.

Thanks for the suggestion Iluvsmuhgrass

My bantu knot-outs don't produce anything remotely resembling a afro, lol. It straightens my hair out and makes it hang. The knots may have been too large, though...This is my DD's knot-out (her roots are blown out) and mine looks similar:

I may get a steamer - with 4 heads of hair in the house, it would be used!

@JosieLynn

I always airdry. I even airdry before I flatiron. My hair just forms a curly wedge that's split down the middle. It doesn't tangle, thank goodness. Thanks for responding, though!

That picture is immediately after my BC and the loose curls have improved after egg treatments and ACV rinses. They do look better after every co-wash, so you're right about seeing improvement as time goes on. I don't think it's heat damage, though.

Those loose curls are my crown, which has always been completely different than the rest of my hair. When I relaxed, most times I didn't relax the crown, just a horseshoe around the edge of my hair.

Thanks for the advice, lady!

sipp100 I did mine on wet hair (with product because I hate the idea of not moisturizing) and it comes out big and fluffy. If I blow dry then do a bantu knot out, it resembles your DD's hair. I twist my sections (not two strand... just take the entire thing and twirl it), then I put it into a knot. It gives more body and definition. I asked my sister what she did back in the day since she has a similar hair texture to yours and she had a nice fro (but she says it would flop on her lol). She would wash, blow out, and tease it into submission. I don't think that's a good idea though.... tangle city. :nono:
