For those that have washed their mini twists, how was the take down process?
Was it a disaster or did it go pretty well with no major issues--tangles, knots etc..?

~TIA~

In summer & warm months, yea. In winter & cold months, nay. For some reason my mini twists could not retain moisture after I washed them this winter...neither could I coax moisture back into the twists. I know, it baffles me too.

I sooo wish I could wash in twist. Even just washing 1x after they are in 1x week leads to the beginning of dreads. I envy those that can wear twists for weeks and wash in them. Ok, the end of my bemoaning

Still going to enjoy this thread though.

Generally I would not recommend untwisting washed mini twist without the use of a lubricant such as olive oil. This helps to alleviate some of the tangling that will be as a result of shed hair and plain ol tangling.

I'm surprised to see so many more nays than yays. Let's see if it changes tomorrow. I have seen so many people post that they do this, I thought it was more common.

No tangles, no frizz when I wash my twists. In fact, my ends are much more defined after I wash. I should note that by wash, all I do is apply condish half way up the twists, baggy, DC overnight and then rinse with cool water in the sink. Apply my leave-in and oil and airdry. I've had no problems thus far. I only leave my twists in 2-3 weeks at a time because I work out 4-5x a week and kinda leary about a full head wash.

Yeah, I think I was the only yay. I had trouble in winter (tangling/dryness), but when it was good, it was really good. I could wash my mini twists weekly and just go. If I could figure out how to do that year-round, then I'd be unstoppable.

When I wash my hair in twists using my normal method, I get tangles at the the roots and knotting at the very ends, leading to breakage and splits. If i use cold water to wash twists, the knotting and tangling is reduced, but that just aint gonna happen in this weather. So i do miniplaits instead. No tangling, no shrinkage, no frizz, less splits, and most importantly of all, no cold water necessary.

I do it but I also only wash them no more then 2 times. I usually leave them in for a month and only wash 1 -2 times anything more leads to excessive tangling. I generally oil them down before taking them out.

I have to wash them b/c I can't go longer than a week without washing my hair. Take down is a mess and that's why I'm retiring them.

NAY! If I wash my twists, they tangle like crazy and feel dryer for some reason. The "fresh twist look" tends to last longer when I don't wash them.

I asked this question years ago and the suggestion was to wash and focus on the scalp only. There's no way I could that because my roots matt up quickly like this. I just don't wash anymore. Some people clean the scalp with sea breeze or acv etc. I have to under all the twist to wash properly...

I've noticed washing my softer textured fine 4a/b hair in twists results in more tangles. My daughter's hair holds twists exceptionally well and does not tangle when washing. Her hair is kinkier/shrinkier 4b/cish.

I actually find redoing my twists after a wash is easiest. No tangles whatsoever. I think your method of twisting makes a difference. If you twirl each strand before twisting and if you are stretching the strands as you do so, then the hair strands are kept from tangling.

i'm all the way nay on that one. with my hair its a definite no no, no bueno. i tried it and detangling was a nightmare. even when i did braid the twists in big sections (that works for me when i have mini braids).
