Ladies I have a delimma,
I am trying to figure out if I have fine hair or not. I do not know. Many of you say "I have fine hair so I do this or that." Does fine hair break easily? Mine does. But it is also very kinky so I don't know if that means fine or coarse or what. I have heard that the reason blacks have mostly short hair is because it is very fine and breaks easily. It grows at the same rate as any other race but it breaks more often. So if that's the case, does that mean that all blacks have fine hair? I am confused. help ladies!

bump for responses. I see some have viewed but no responses. Could it be that you all are just as confused as I am? Seriously, what is fine or coarse hair?

I have fine and course hair, so of course you can have both. Course refers to the texture of the hair whereas fine refers to the actual thickness of the individual hair strand. Relaxing (especially bone straight) can cause hairs to fine out over time. I used to have very thick hair, the hair would be literally heavy in my hand. But over time my individual hairs began to become more and more fine; I basically have the same amount of hair, it's just that the individual hairs are thinner. I now relax with ORS Olive Oil relaxer which leaves my hair slightly underprocessed. So I have several inches of thicker hair at the roots and finer ends.

Hair texture is the measure of the circumference of the hair strand itself. These textures are classified as being "coarse", "fine", or "medium". So, coarse and fine are related to the thickness of each strand of hair, not the shape of each hair. Shape attributes are commonly referred to as kinky, curly, wavy, coily. Many fine haired people have kinky hair, just as many coarse haired people have kinky hair. This is not to be confused with density, as density relates to the number of hairs per square inch.

ETA: When we see someone with 'thick' hair, it can be fine hair with high density (lots of fine strands) or medium to coarse hair with fewer strands.

Fine, Medium, Coarse - Strand thickness
Wavy, Curly, Kinky, Coily - Strand shape
Thick, Thin, Medium - Hair density
