Hey ladies, I'm currently working out a regimen.
And I have no idea where to start.

How did you start?
Did you copy someone elses and then tweak?
Or is there a generic starting place? ie. Moisturise daily, co-wash twice weekly and see what happens.
I need the :help:.

I have no regimen and other than coming home some eves and thinking, "maybe I ought to co-wash tonight" I dunno what the hell I'm doing.

There is a good regimen helping tool on Silk Dreams Hair website. Also do a search for regimen building for newbies :) hth

i figured out my hair reggie based on what my hair needed. i have low porosity hair, plus it is fine. i founded out that my hair can't go past a week without being washed. i found out that i can use heavy cream products and liquid/light moisturizers work better, as well as light oils. acknowledging this info helped in so many ways.

Yea I read all the old stickies dedicated to newbies I learned names of ingredients and what they do for our hair to help me pick out the correct products and with that and the help from many different ladies here I tweaked my regimen until I found a solid one that works for me:)

Wow! What a comprehensive list. Ok, I guess I need to start by finding out my hair type. My hair is thick and I'm relaxed, that's all I know.
Good place to start. Thanks

I copied someone elses reggie & then tweaked it as I got to know my hair alittle more. The person I copied is shorty2sweet59. She has a blog & youtube page

I built my regimen around the products that my hair likes, and what my hair needed.

I co-cleanse 2-3x's a week,
I do a weekly hard protein overnight DC
I moisturize 1-2x's a day

Your hair should set the regimen, because you need to do, and use, what works for Your hair.

Go on YouTube and look for a person who has a similar hair type as yours. After that go from there. When I first began I would try to
Copy regimens of folks with totally different hair textures than myself and failed everytime until I found folks who hair looked like mine :0). Then I began to have success.

I did start my hair journey a year back by experimenting products but it wasn't a good idea, I had a lot of confusing results and I ended up with a lot of breakage
"every curly hair is different"

I started reading a book dedicated to black hair and it was a very good foundation to start tailoring my own regimen instead piling up products

In general these are the basic care steps I use

1. Pre poo oiling: coconut oil
2. Shampoo: any sulfate free shampoo or co-wash
3. Deep condition: curl junkies curl rehab
4. Leave in conditioner (MUST): kinky curly knot today leave in conditioner
5. Seal: coconut or Argan oil
6. Style

The deep conditioning step is a dynamic one and it makes a lot of difference
The moisture-protein balance is very important to avoid excess breakage
Manipulation and styling also affect breakage

Chose the product according to your hair nature, porosity and thickness

Yup! :yep: This is how I began, too. Found someone who's hair type was like mine (4B/relaxed). Then tweaked their regimen and products until I found what my hair liked. Now I have a firm reggie, with staple products and a few "straggler-products" that come-and-go...

This is why I need a place to start. I'm currently being reactive rather than proactive and I'm not sure how good that is for my hair. I'm not good at routine at the best of times, even for really important things, but I'm determined to get this right.

Ok, I've found out I have 4b hair, I'm now scouring the net/site to see if anyone else of the same hair type has posted their regime.

I've found a couple basic samples online, I plan to take one and arrange it to suit my lifestyle and amend accordingly if the results don't work. I hope this thread helps lots of other ladies.

shortdub78, how often do you moisturize, I have fine strands too and though I want to moisturize daily my hair rebels against it (becomes extremely greasy and weighed down).

In the beginning, it was hard to know what my hair liked so I copied others and tweaked from there. In hindsight, copying others wasn't the ideal scenario because it caused me to chase product after product but I had to start somewhere. Through much trial and error, I finally found products that worked for me vs. using products that worked for others.

I'm relaxed and my LHCF blog lists quite a number of products that I like.

i moisturize daily, but i use a liquid leave-in or moisturizing spray. i use Wave Nouveau Moisturizing Mist, or CON Argan OIl leave-in spray. they don't make my hair wet.

Welcome!
Buy new things slowly and carefully to avoid becoming a product junkie lol.
Here are what i feel are essentials to any regimen:
Cleansing
Conditioning
Moisture
Styling

You can go from there based on what your hair needs/the time you have to spend on it. It will be lots of trial and error, which can be fun.

Sent from my phone-typos to be expected :)
