Last time I flatironed my hair there was no smell AT ALL. Not during the process or after or even when I wet my hair at the end of the week. I attribute that to using NOTHING on my hair but protectant. I do all the moisturizing during my wash ie the conditioning part. And just because I liked the sound of the name, I used CHI Infra Treatment - Thermal Protective Treatment as my conditioning product. I then rinsed it off and finished with an ACV rinse. I then airdried in Curlformers WITHOUT PRODUCT (braids would've worked too). The only products I used on my hair were heat protectant. I explain how I did it in this thread.

I believe that if you use something that isn't meant to be used with heat--like your regular moisturizer--it'll be cooked by the heat and will smell. Also I believe applying anything else with heat protectant prevents its proper adhesion to your hair and so you either risk burning your hair or you will get reversion because your hair wasn't well sealed.

I properly protect my hair by using quality tools and products. When you use both properly the burn hair smell stops existing.

The wash before(night before or day of) to just start with clean, deep conditioned hair.

Most quality products will be fine for your heat tool as long as you don't use too much products and your flat iron is good quality. I also put my leave ins on damp hair. When you finish blow drying you shouldn't feel any residue on your hair before you begin flat ironing. You hair should just feels soft and detangled.

I like to overnight DC (when possible)...otherwise I opt for a 15 min. DC under the dryer or 30 mins. under the steamer (with conditioner).

When in DIY mode, I use a heat protectant by Tresemme that I really love. Sorry! I will take a pic/post the exact flat iron name when I get home, but my plates are less prone to build-up than what I've experienced with past flat irons in my "arsenal" :lachen:

All of the other lovely ladies alluded to it as well: start with quality products and tools and you'll get less of the burning smell and our hair loves us back for it :yep:

I definitely use heat protectants. when I finish deep conditioning I do a final THOROUGH rinse. then I air dry to damp. apply moisturizer (KCKT) and seal in the moisture with grapeseed oil which doubles as a heat protectant. then I add a minimal amount of heat protectant to each section before blow drying. then I let my hair cool down and absorb the products, often I wait til the next day and flat iron in small sections comb chase method w a rubber seamless comb.

properly moisturizing my hair prevents dryness and reversion and my hair doesn't come out greasy because I apply all my products on damp hair before blow drying and don't use any additional products afterwards.

Thank you ladies, i have a lot of products to pick from. Looks like I need to DC and use a good heat protestant.
