Hello ladies,

I am an old member returning for some help. I am currently in remission from leukemia and my hair has started to grow back and I not really sure how or what I'm doing. The new texture is that of a newborn baby very, very soft. It is fine and straight on the sides & fine and curly on the top. I guess it would be a 3a? My hair previously was a 4a. I have plenty of experience dealing with my previous grade but I have no idea how to deal with new grade of hair. My main issue is when i wake up, my hair seems dry in the back and on the sides. My sleeping caps/scarves won't stay on at night but I do have a satin pillow case as backup. I co-wash every other day, wet my hair daily & I use a leave-in daily with jojoba oil, evoo, castor oil, peppermint oil as a moisturizer. I'm not loyal to any product. Prior to all this I used whatever product on sale & my hair thrived. I don't won't to wear wigs & I don't think my hair could hold a braid. My bf suggested gels & mouse. He says I have Justin Beiber hair now. I guess I'm kinda lost & could use some direction & would appreciate any thing you have to offer.

Thanks,
Kenedie

Congratulations on your progress with you treatment so far!

The hair changes from chemotherapy are usually permanent just so you know. I don't know how long your hair is now but if you are looking for hold I would suggest curly pudding or butters as hey won't dry out your hair as much as gel can and won't cause breakage. They aare also moisturizing. Also make sure you are sealing. The cuticle of your hair is thinner now so you will loose loisture if you don't seal. I like Bee mine hair oil for sealing it is a mix of shea (but not heavy), olive, jojoba, and a few others. They also have a curly pudding. If you don't want to spend a lot of money or order anything. Try aloe vera gel to help you style.

Thank you do much or your response! My hair is about 2 inches now. I have some Miss jessie's curly pudding somewhere in my cabinet, I will try that. Where can you get Bee mine? Can you order it online? I cannot go into public places yet so I will need to order online or send the bf shopping & that is a task all by itself. Again thank you!!

Congratulations!! We are declaring victory and pray for your continued recovery and strength. God is a good and faithful God. :)

In regards to your hair, I am in agreement with Bun Mistress. Also continue to sleep on silk or satin cases until you can wear a scarf. Also prettyantoinettes.com has some silk beanies that would probably hold. Not to mention the various satin bonnets.

Take care of yourself and keep us updated as you are a blessing and inspiration. :)

There are a lot of online hair products companies so you have a variety of choices...
Also, don't rule out sources like walmart.com, walgreens.com, target.com etc.

Please continue to get well!

Congrats on making it through chemo! I hope you continue to have a blessed recovery.

With 3a hair it seems like less is more. I would stay away from oil-heavy leave ins. Too much oil can dry the hair out.

You may want to try Kiss my Face Upper Management gel. My SO who is 3a/3b uses it, and it seems to work very well for him. It gives a light hold, but makes his hair soft and shiny. It doesn't get stiff or dried out at all. I think that gel works way better for his texture then mine (I am 3c/4a).

I would give that a try. You can get it from drugstore.com or directly from the Kiss My Face website.

I think the other posters have made great suggestions. I just really wanted to say congrats on your health progress! I am always touched to hear of stories like this. Take care of yourself and God is good indeed!

I had thd same issue when my hair grew back after I lost mostly all of it to psorasis in my scalp. I was completely bald when my hair started to grow back. It came in very fine like baby hair but it did change and go back to its natural texture after a few months. I really can't help with style options as my hair was very short so I had to resort to mini braids until it thickened up.

congrats lady! i think BeeMine hair milk would be great for moisture and a light oil like jojoba, grapeseed, etc... would be good for you! continue cowashing as well and clarify when needed.

I'm a coarse 3c/4a and the KMF Upper Management Gel works the same way it does for your s/o. I think its more about hair properties than hair type

Overall, you are definitely right.

I know OP mentioned she thinks a 3a now and i know that seemed to work for him. For me it was so so, definitely not bad.

Congrats on your therapy! I pray it stays in remission and never returns. God is indeed good.

Is your hair on the drier side? I'm 3C, dry and find the Beautiful Tresses butter to work very well. It's sold at Sally's and you can order it on their website.

Yes God is definitely good! I'm glad you are doing wonderful hun. Have you tried grease less moisture from hydroquench? Its a good moisturizer and grease less states the name lol. Its sold on etsy.com

Side note: my mom is going thru chemo right now and I joke with her all the time she's going to grow back blonde str8 hair lol! She just looks at me crazy : /

Thank you all for your responses! I used the Miss Jessie's curly pudding yesterday and my hair seemed to like it so far. I'm going to research all the suggestions & order more options and let you know what happens.

I think I need to also purchase a new pillowcase, this one is pretty old so it could be part of the overnight dryness problem.

The nurses warned me that my hair would grow back different but I never gave it much thought until now. They were right I don't have the same curls but them doggone gray hairs are resilient as hell!! Praying for you & your mother! Cancer is hell for the patient & the family.

All the above posts sounds like great advice. Congrats on your successful treatment and remission!! To God be the glory!!

Congratulations!

About your hair, IA with the ladies who recommended the satin bonnet. It stayed on my head when I was shaved. Perhaps baggying will be helpful as well.

For what it's worth, I noticed that it was harder to maintain moisture on shorter hair. As soon as I had enough to braid, brading and twisting it, helped to hold in the moisture.
