I've read marshmalllow root is good for softening and providing slip. Any users in here? I'd like to know more about how it has benefited your hair, how you use it, where you purchased it from, and any other useful information.

mg1979, are you referring to the tea? Maybe try the tea thread. They are using all sorts of teas. They should be able to help you.

divachyk: I'm not really sure if I'm referring to a tea. Some of things I read was about using it's mucillage in your conditioner for added slip. Not sure how it works as a tea or if that's considered the same technique. But I'll read in the tea thread and see. Thanks!

I know there is a marshmallow root tea and it said to be very moisturizing. I've seen it mentioned in the tea thread. mg1979

I have several products that contain Marshmallow Root. It provides "Slip" and is considered a Mucilage(sp).

It has incredible moisturizing properities. I plan to purchase the Tea at some point and add it to my Tea Rinses.

OP I use marshmallow root every week in some shape or form. I add hot water to the roots.....let it steep for at least 1/2 hr and it cools. (I usually add burdock root and slippery elm - all AWESOME for providing mucilage). Then I strain the tea, and use the tea to mix in with my DCs/ayurvedic pastes/clays.   I get added moisture for days.

ETA: I also have the powder which I will occasionally add to the DCs etc. But for some reason I like the action of brewing etc.

And many thanks to bajandoc86 who suggested marshamallow root tea to me and goodness gracious is it ever moisturizing...and overall fantastic:yep: You feel it's effects on the FIRST use:yep: OP just get it, you won't be disappointed:grin:

Thanks all! So for the root you have to brew it and the powder you just mix in as is to your conditioner or whatever? Any pros or cons to using the root versus the powder?

Re: Marshmallow root users
@mg1979, I am a big fan of this herb for all the reasons listed up thread. I tea rinse at least once a week and I like to experiment with different herbs based on their health properties and what my hair needs each wash day. Marshmallow root is one of the main herbs typically included in my tea rinses (along with nettle, hibiscus, burdock root). I find that marshmallow root has a softening/moisturizing effect on my hair so I typically use as a layered rinse under a protein-based DC or as a final moisturizing tea rinse. I purchase most of my herbs from a local health food store that's within walking distance of my house. I use large empty tea bags purchased from a local bulk store and throw together the combination of herbs then steep the teabag overnight.

I've used both ways and there are no medicinal differences but I like the root for tea (less sediment in the tea) and I like the powder for the mixing in conditioners etc -- you get a blended creamy paste (instead of bits of herbs).

hair4today: Thanks for all the info. I see that you have low porosity, so that gives me some hope that this could work for me. It seems like porosity may be a maor reason why some things work for some and not for others. Nix08, bajandoc86, & Ann0804: do you know if you are low, high, or normal porosity?
