BEAUTYU2U posted in another thread that her mother believes if you want long hair you "wanna be white"

It suddenly occured to me that people who say things like that must believe being white is the ultimate goal to reach, why else would they say it? i mean no one ever says "oh, you wanna be Asian" or "dang gurl why you act so cambodian?"

so i was just wondering how many of you ladies have been accused of wanting to be white or actting white because of your hair, or the way you speak?

LOL

I don't think long hair has anything to do with being white - there are plenty of woman and men in the Caribbean with waist length dread locks.

I think perception and stereotypes play a role in how something is received in terms of groups. I think it's fascinating that when blacks deviate from their expected paths (facetiously meaning blacks who "read too much," "speak white," etc), they're trying to be white. Yet whites can appropriate things from black culture and it's a-okay (excluding "wiggers," they catch hell).

I've been accused by many of "acting white" because of the way I speak. My parents were serious about ensuring that we spoke proper english because they felt that as immigrants we should make an extra effort to assimilate. I've never heard anyone say anything like that about hair though....weird how people just randomly label you on the basis of something so inconsequential. After all, what does hair have to do with the person that you really are or who you aspire to be????

yes, yes...I want to be white. That's defffffinitely it! I've been found out. I've been caught! Man, I knew id never be able to hide it!

: P lolol ((shakes head))

No different to me than saying you want to be white or have self hatred issues because you relax....one has their preference, it's as simple as that to ME (for ME).

Growing up in the innercity, I spoke pretty good english of course then to everyone I was trying to be YT. I had friends outside my race again I was trying to be YT.

My poor mother told our family they should see my hair "it's long like a YT womans..... SMDH

I hear this nonsense all the time. people say I talk white, or I act white. when i was in middle school this sista told me i don't talk black. I asked her what is "talking black?" she said "you know it's when you talk lik dis" i said to her in the most proper english i could muster "talking lik dis, is not something i aspire to do. I am not going to spend 8 hours a day 5 days a week in school and come out saying dis or dat. that would be a grand waste of my time."

i felt good busting out that kind of knowledge at 12 years old

I've been accused of trying to be white because of how I speak. What can I say? I'm fascinated with grammar and make it a point to speak standard American English (I'm purposely not saying "proper English" because I feel that, in regards to English, the word "proper" is mired with socio-political biases.)

I used to be upset by the accusations, but now I feel sorry for my accusers. I'm sorry that they don't understand how their perspective means that they've subjugated themselves.

@the bolded exactly, it is sad because you realize that person has accepted the lie that others are better than them. people really locate themselves when they speak.

Okay time to act up ...

Yes by growing my 4a/b hair long it is my hope to look exactly like a white woman. Once my hair is buttocks length people will look at me and see that I am as white as pasteurized milk !

No but seriously , I think that it takes a lot more than wanting long hair to be labeled as having a racial identity crisis.

It seems whenever citizens of black world speak anything other than the slang of the moment, we are ,"talking white."

We were out the other day and a young man commented on how well my dd speaks and asked how old she was. She just turned 4. He said that dd will probably be one of those kids who gets to high school with a large vocabulary. I say probably. Then he asked if we spoke proper English to them. With a raised eyebrow I say, "yeah." "No slang or anything?"

I told him we speak standard American English to them. I mean how else would I speak to them? I found it to be a peculiar question.

Between me growing my hair out, working out, and speaking standard English, I must want to be whiter than polar bears in an avalanche.

Even though she doesn't outright say I'm trying to be white, she definitely has a problem with me not caring for my hair "the black people way". Daily co washing with Suave and no grease might as well be sinful. And don't let me bring home something with 'curl' anywhere on the label. Her blood will boil.

People used to tell me that I sounded white back in the day and it never bothered me at all. Particularly now that Im in the working world, I feel like having neutral proper sounding voice gives me an advantage to people who have distinctly ethnic or regional accents.

But I also feel like in general black people are moving away from that I want to talk, dress, and act like I'm from the ghetto thing. Sounding well educated and dressing in a classy way is looked upon more favorably (as it should have always been...).

I never heard anybody compare having long hair to wanting to be white. That's not to say there's some racial related issues regarding long hair in the black community, but I just haven't heard it expressed in that way.

You guys didn't know once your hair reaches tailbone length it sucks all the melanin outta you.
BE CAREFUL!!!

I have seen this before :yep:

:lachen: Too funny !

So do black chicks who wear weave down to their butt want to be white too? Or is fake long hair ok for black girls?

No different to me than saying you want to be white or have self hatred issues because you relax....one has their preference, it's as simple as that to ME (for ME).

I don't think this is a true comparison, because while I am not saying that one who relaxes wants to be white, we know that straight hair is not a norm for black people and I know there are many people who look down upon natural hair because it is considered black and appreciate a good straight relaxing because it is acceptable to white folks. I personally don't care, but I am also not going to act like these people don't exist.

As far as long hair being white, this to me is extremely strange, but I have heard it before. I was just told yesterday that it represents a European standard of beauty, which is why it is like a person wanting to be white because they want to fit into that standard. :ohwell:

This has been talked about here a lot, but I'm still surprised every time I read posts about it. I've been accused of being white because I go to the gym, watch what I eat with a strict diet, practice alternative medicine, shop at Whole Foods co-ops and farmers markets purchased a practical car instead of one with "bling" and rims, have natural hair (yes, really!)*, spend hours at the library, have a goodreads.com account, love English, have white friends, etc.

*Wear my hair as/in without major altering (relaxing or weaving) is trying to be white, because white people don't have to do any of that unless they choose to. Being able to rinse and wash my hair anytime, wash my hair at the gym without carrying major arsenal with me, sweat freely, walk in the rain without an umbrella, etc is trying to be white no matter how kinky/curly it is.

Everything from the way I speak, the music I listen to, who I've dated, my affect, deep political passions, and my intellect...everything has been attacked as trying to be White. So much so, that I found myself dumbing down, and putting up a false self for others. I have since cut that crap out.

Why is everything that is "Good" or "Favored" attributed to White culture? Which is exactly what I ask people who start up with that mess now. Why are we Still giving White people so much power? How about, because I love myself, and everything In me and On me, I wish for it to be the best. I want my hair to be thick and healthy...I'm not cutting it, so it may well grow long. In that instance, what can be attributed to White culture! I want to be well spoken, intelligent, well read, educated, have great credit, be married and raise my children with my husband.....isn't that what we should ALL want??

When people try to pull you down, give them both of your hands so that you can lift them up. Nothing White about that!

Lol. This reminds me of when I overheard two black dudes having a conversation behind me.

"I really gotta start going to rock concerts so I can get me a white girl!"
