Anyone else struggle with hard water and hair growth?

I was told that the new area i moved to was well water. When I went in to pay my bill I asked what the hardness level was and was told 28-31grains per gal. The water has phosphate, clorine and floriude added. I consulted a hardwater descaler company and they said they would sale me a descaler for a discount. I am torn between a water softner or a descaler. A descaler attracts minerals that would normally bind to your hair, skin, faucets, shower walls and magnetizes them to the descaling unit thereby creating softer water.:ohwell:
 
I don't know all the science behind it but I think the water was a lot harder in the area that I went to college. I had to trim a lot more frequently and even the hair dresser I went to mentioned that a lot of her clients complained about the hard water. Now that I'm back home, I'll be watching for any difference.
 
I live in the country and our individual deep well ground water is the only thing I'm going to miss about the living in the middle of no where.

I went to my mother's house in Savannah (Water which has been through their water treatment system) and washed my hair and was disgusted by how stipped and dry my hair felt after cowashing. I tell my mother to get a shower filter or something. She has BSL Natural hair but she started out with that length after combing out her dreds. Now her ends are suffering from the hard water.
I wonder if you can purchase your own deep well or if the city doesn't allow it?

A water softener is on my list. I plan on buying one in the next 90 days. When I bought my house I figured I would take care of the water softener later. It's been 8 years and I still haven't done it. I've had to be much more careful since I have hard water. I use ion hard water shampoo once a month to help with the build up. I had always avoided strong shampoos but it helps. I also follow it with regular steam treatments with distilled water to restore and maintain the moisture level in my hair. Oh, I also use a shower head filter which helps a bit.

I can't wait to get the water softener. I'm sure it will have a positive effect on my hair and skin.
 
Amazon sells a showerhead filter that works pretty good - without the pressure drop.
 
I have hard water wher I live, but I just make sure to do a vinegar rinse before put in my conditioner.
 
Hmm I guess wouldn't know any difference since I've lived in an area that has very hard water all of my life. A water softener is on my list though.
 
For shower filters I love aquasana... It doesn't mess with my water pressure. I bought it with a nice shower head and I can feel and smell the difference in my water, but the only other one I've tried is sprite... I looked around for a while online seeing the comparisons and aquasana or the wellness shower were the best at the time 2 years ago when I joined lhcf. As for a descaler vs a water softener I'd vote water softener but only because what you described about the descaler sounds less appealing and I actually know what a water softener does while a descaler I guess removes lime scale and stuff idk. If it were me I'd call lowes or home depot and ask them or talk the water place that offered the deal to you and ask "if it were you which would you honestly choose".

I have hard water here in AZ. We use the Sprite shower filter sold at Home Depot for $18. It works very well for the price.
 
I moved overseas where the water was not only hard, but full of stuff to the point where you could not drink it. I went from CBL to ear length because of it. I bought a shower water softener/filter after about 6 months, but the damage had been done. I'm not even sure it really helped. I'm back in the states now, recovering and inching back to SL.

I noticed my water was hard within weeks of buying our house. I talked my husband into getting a reverse osmosis (sp?) system for the house. It totally cleans the water and we can tell the difference in the taste and smell. I also can tell a difference in my skin and hair.

Best money I have ever spent.
 
The water in London it VERY hard...
I tend to use ORS Creamy Aloe Shampoo now and then when my hair isn't acting right.
Works a charm.
