So my mom just told me not everybody is meant to have long hair like my grandmother and i need to perm my thick hair lol. It hurt my feeling. and makes my blood boil really bad that 40+ women not all but a lot of them are ignorant on hair and im sure another race could care for their hair better than they can. I didn't say anything i rather show her and I don't want her to say a word to me when i reach hip length. I'll just say oh my hair isnt allowed to grow this long. little does she know shes not allowed one finger in my hair again and when i have a daughter she def wont be touching her hair lol.

i'm APL i finally got it together and know my wrongs for why i wasnt retaining.

2012 here i come.

All I can say is

and it really sucks when the hater is your Mom. Just whip your hair and KIM.

Congrats on APL btw

Ok, time for that old cliché...
'Actions speak louder than words!' But even actions may not be enough!

Unfortunately, misconceptions about black hair growth potential are deep rooted within the black community (even in other races).
I remember when I told my mum I was trying to grow my hair to waistlength and she did not take that seriously at all. Now I've surpassed waistlength, there are other reasons why I've managed to grow hair that long!!!

So, OP just do you! If others around you see the light while you're on your HHJ, that's great. But, don't worry about what other people think about how your hair is 'supposed to be'.

Happy Hair Growing!

Wide sweeping, disparaging remarks about a group of people are never cool whether it is ageism, racism, sexism, etc. Wow!

Mine said "Why would you want to grow your hair to hip length...that's stupid!" My mom is natural too, but she's convinced everyone needs to rock a TWA just like her....:nono: She also thinks its unnecessary to wash your hair more than once a month, and thinks I dunno what I'm tambout...even though my hair has grown from scalp to SL since Feb. "Just cut it all off...it will grow faster!"

Unfortunately, there are alot of misconceptions in the Black community when it comes to hair. I have some ppl in my family who still use hair grease, and you can't tell them anything. So I just let them do what they do. Since I'm working to grow my hair to APL, I hope my gradual progress will inspire them to change for the better =)

Congratulations on APL! Time will show her and you will be enjoying your hair while she will be eating her words. Next thing she will be bragging about her daughter and her long hair. Keep on track because you know better.

Don't worry about it. KIM.
My mom told me my hair wouldn't grow after I cut it all off to go natural, and my dad always looked at me like I was crazy when I said I was going to grow to my waist. She especially picked at me when she found out I was cowashing daily, saying all of my hair was going to break off and I just need to go to a hair salon and let them press it straight, which I refused.
I wore my hair straight for Thanksgiving and they were cooing over how "long" it is (I'm past APL now but don't know exactly how far since I didn't take a pic). Now they don't question why I do "so much" to my hair and they're as excited as I am to see how long it will grow.
It is better to show than tell with my family. But I mean, who isn't results-oriented anyway? Almost everything we do is for results, so if you don't have them, your credibility is usually shot. Just take a look at the latest hairdrenalin threads....:look:

Dang, yall. I'm glad my parents don't say anything crazy to me about my hair practices. My mom doesn't care and my father is just so elated he doesn't have to pay for me to get my hair done anymore lol.

My mum gave me 'that look' when i told her I was growing my hair to WL, she always telling people how "much" I do to my hair to get it so healthy (even though I'm super low maintenance and don't use that many products.)

Then, the other day she had the audacity to tell me that my hair looks so good and healthy because she 'gave me my hair' (even though we have totally different hair types/textures) and not because I grew it out of my scalp and looked after it.
I've been natural my whole life (I'm 19) and this is the first time since I was a little girl that my hair has been this long and healthy. (Between APL and BSL)

From a 40+ mom, girl don't let that stop you. You do you. My mom has never discourage my hair decisions, from several salt n pepper styles to short, natural long and now relax and BSL. My 10 year old goal, is TBL at this time she is about BSL.

I'm with the others OP, you do you. It's funny how people make it their business to worry about hair that isn't on their head.

Now y'all know how lazy I am with my hair and don't generally spend more than 45 minutes total a week on my hair (that includes two washes with one being a DC) and my bro made the remark the other day that he's never known anyone who fusses with hair as much as me. I literally died laughing coz I can see BS when it comes in walking in full gear disguised as a sensible statement.

Asha's-Hair LOL @ your mom taking credit after dissing you. It's like how parents will tell kids they got their brains when they do well in school and when they don't do well, you don't hear any talk of "you inherited my brains". LOL

I'm with you OP. My mom STILL gives me the side eye when I talk about healthy hair, but when I wore my hair out when it reached bsl, the first thing she said was, 'Look at my baby's hair. You have long hair from my family.' PFFT, besides my mom, grandmama and a few of my great aunts, don't nobody have hair anywhere near SL!!!

As a 40+ woman I don't appreciate you generalizing a whole group of women based on your experience with one. :ohwell:

That being said, do you and let the haters drool when you swang your long tresses in time. :yep:

Haters are gonna hate. When I was NL after a bad perm and damage and stopped relaxing I was told by my family:
1. you have good hair, so you can do that (lasted for 4 weeks) then...
2. you don't have good hair,
3. You should B/C
4. You should perm
5. You can't grow you hair that long (MBL)
6. Your should straighten your hair more
7. You should perm
8. You can't grow you hair that long (now at APL)
9. You should straighten it
And my all time favorite

10. You should cut you hair in a bob it looked really cute then (6 years ago) and I'm now at MBL. And funny no one seems to be able to stop right the whip my hair, and I hatepeople touvhing my head.

haters gonna hate. The whole time.

Girl, yes!
When I said I was going back natural all I heard was "you don't have the kind of hair for that."
Then when I cut it, I was told that those weren't my curls and I was wearing a straw set until I physically washed my hair in front of my mother, who was then astounded.
Now my Daddy is all up on it like "you know you got that from me."
And then when I tried to convince my mother to go natural, she went "I don't have that good hair, like you." (And I don't even have what people consider "good hair" in general!)
All in all, OP, these people have no idea what they're talking about. They just want to be right about something, and then when they're wrong, they're going to say whatever they can to make it seem like they aren't. That's not specific to any particular group of people, though.
