Naturals are we "reaching" to claim hair lengths

My pulled hair is shorter than my heat straightened hair. Ya'll must be pullin yall hair real hard OR not able to get your hair bone straight when you straighten. I try not to rip my hair out at the root when I pull it so it would be impossible for me to pull it longer than it's true length.

I get shrinkage but not to where if I pull a strand it won't fall to basically its natural length. When I flat iron it hits apl or a little past when hubby pulls it down it falls the same place *shrugs* I flat iron to show him all my efforts aren't in vain and to get documented measurements but I don't see a big difference.
I do think if you try pulling it down yourself it will be a little shorter than if someone else pulled it. When I pull I get above apl and an arm ache when he pulls its further and oddly more gentle.

I usually take my progress shots with the same hair strand : the one on my right lowest back. and Yesterday after taking down my 2 week twists I was shocked to discover that another stransd that were above were longer than my usual "progress shots hair strand" that means I didn't know my hair was so long and may be I will never know my "real" length until I straighten it, but I don't care, just healthy hair and let it growing and be on point on my retention length and really, it doesn't matter if i'm at 13.5inch or 13.75 inch lol :drunk:

Since I have no intention of straightening my hair or relaxing, I stretch only to understand if my hair is growing. for the same reason I only search and destroy and I don't need my end to be trimmed into a perfect line. I consider my length and shape as "more or less".
One thing I don't do is look at other people's growth rate since I have a long neck and torso and my waistlength would probably be another person's knee length or viceversa. Inches/cm are my way of measuring growth and I know my hair is doing well if this year's growth looks like the growth I had last year.
I also have an irregular growth (sometimes it looks like it's taking a rest), so looking at years or 4 months at a time gives me a better idea.
Breakage is the only factor I take seriously since I know it is what could hinder my growth
.
this and this and thiiiiiis !!! yeah Curlykale !!!!

also some may put their head too much on back when stretching their hair strand !!!!!!!!!!!!!! sometimes I see some "progress pic" and on some, people's heads are really too much back, and I can't tell a thing or people would say I'm a hater LOL !! :lachen:

I may straighten the back of my hair at the end of the year. Gheez I don't even have a flat iron. I have a solia I use for my weaves.

I guess it depends on your goal. As a big haired natural my hair goal is to have my fro at my shoulders when in a braid out. I don't really care about how long my hair is straight because I don't wear it that way. It's already at my shoulders when pulled. I'm trying to get that sun blocking "somebody alert the authorities or tsa" type fro.

Why not try rollersetting a piece or something if you're adversed to heat or combing all the kinks out? My goal is full shoulderlength hair when stretched in a style. My flat iron jobs always reverts within minutes even when going to a professional so I don't see myself using heat for awhile. Also when in the shower my hair is longer obviously, out of the shower and damp or dry it's shorter, and when straightened its shorter due to puffiness.

Your straightened hair won't be shorter than your stretched hair. I'm not following that straight hair could be shorter. Your stretched hair still has curls and waves which would make it shorter than hair that has been straightened which has fewer curls and waves.

So if I reach APL stretched (with good posture) it will be APL or longer when I stretch.

I agree

When I stretch my curls my hair is about BSL maybe. Shrinkage is a beast! But when I flatiron my hair it is past waist length. I don't do the "lean back" either ahhahaa If I were to get it professionally blown out I'm sure it would be a half inch longer. I don't straighten as perfectly as they do at the salon.

If I stretch a small hunk of hair it will be HL. Straightened it's HL but looks even longer because all the hair is straight.

Only way I could see it not being/looking the same length is if I were to try and grab a really huge ponytail of kinky hair. All of it is not going to stretch out easily or evenly.

I may attempt to straighten my hair in Jan via blow dryer and will see what length I am with out stretching (tugging) hair.

oh SUNSHINE BABY we are comparing hair that has been pulled ( stretching hair by pulling it to see where it stops) V.S straight hair. In the thread you posted she isn't stretching her hair. Makes sense?

understood, i've seen hair that has been heat stretched mentioned too. I'll try to find a better comparison pic

I my self is starting to believe stretching hair by pulling is longer than heat stretched (flat ironed) hair.
There's my hopes that I was creeping on BSB. I guess now that I appear close to BSB by pulling the hair means I am actually full APL? say it aint so. ;-(

I think there is a difference. I've noticed that when many of my fav youtubers straighten the hair isn't as long as when they stretch. Kimmaytube is an example. Stretched she is almost WL but only only MBL straighten. And MBL is being generous

that's a really good point

when we physically pull our hair down, it's longer. when we don't pull, hair is shorter. and none of us are going to walk around pulling our hair down

so if your goal is say WL hair, then u need to probably grow a bit more for it to actually be that length without having to pull it down.

kimmaytube didnt straighten to bone straight though IIRC.

Maybe some people have a fleshy scalp and they are not only strecthing their hair but their skin too and so they get added inches.

Like this :lachen:

i must be odd because my streched hair always seems longer than my straightened hair

Same here. It depends on how straight you get the hair. My straightened hair still has some shrinkage to it. My hair has crinkles all the way down the strand when it's straightened. And it's always puffy at the roots. I go by the stretched length.

Yes! THIS! Lol... I see many "can i claim [blank] yet" threads where it's obvious that the OP has tilted her head back. I just keep it moving.

I wonder this as well. That is why I am flat ironing my hair next month so I can see for real. It will be my first time using a flat iron this year.

Why should anyone care if they do that? whatever it takes to keep them motivated, I say go for it. If you think you are making progress regardless of if you are deluding yourself or not, it will keep you working to achieve your goals, but if everything you do shows no result, you may as well just throw in the towel.

I say good for them, whatever lenght you think you've achieved I agree. It is not my place to correct you or dash your dream. Lean back, lean forward, bend your body all the way to the floor for all I care, just do what keeps you positive.
