thinning out your natural hair??

has anyone done it so their hair will lay better/not take a whole day to wash?? My only concern is when I straighten it I wont have those thick luscious locks. if so pitchas please!!

I think my hair ends have thinned out some from flat ironing over the last few years. It does lay better, but still shrinks to high heavens and I have naturally fine-stranded hair to begin with; however, it's never taken me a day nor several hours to wash my hair. My hair is currently between APL and BSL.

Edited to Add: But if I were you, I would not try to thin out my hair. My ends used to be as thick as my roots, and I hope they get back that way. The last time I flat ironed my hair was September.

I would never thin afro textured hair. If it's taking you all day to wash your hair, there are ways you can make that more efficient like washing in sections for example. And as for flatter hair, there are ways you can do that too with and without heat - depending on your preference.

your thick hair is a gift

you know what i discovered tho? (well someone else discovered it and i thought it was cool). if your hair is long enough and you want to do a quick pony or bun that lays superflat, canerow the latter 3/4 of your hair. so leave the front loose (leave less out for a thinner appearance) and comb your loose hair over your canerowed hair and BAM! manageable hair that is quick to style daily.

I had my hair cut at Ouidad back in August which was supposed to reduce the bulk but I honestly didn't see a difference - just seemed like she gave me layers.

A friend suggested I thin out my hair years ago before I was natural because I felt like my hair can never lay flat in the front because it's so dense. I think she was referring to the same technique at Oidad - going in between strands and cutting them really short.

I would'nt recommend them using thinning shears it make natural wavy or textured hair very frizzy and in my opinion contributes to more split ends.

No. Thinner ends does not neccessarily mean sleeker. The only time I ever used thinning shears on a client ( when I used to work at a beauty shop) was ONE time one. She was from Belize and she suffered from some type of disease where she was abnormally hairy, ( too much testosterone in the body...I think) and her hair was so super duper abnormally thick, she was not able to maintain a hairstyle. and its not an everyday thing to come across people with hair so thick it needs thinning.
Thinning shears are only to remove bulk from the hair, or if you want soft whispy ends and should not be used on curly hair otherwise you may be removing more than you desired. You will have to straighten your hair in order to use thinning shears to determine if you see and have any bulk within the hair.

when i think about it, it's essentially the same principle as what i was saying about canerowing under loose hair. except DSylla's way is much less maintenance in every way (tho far more final).

I've only ever heard of thinning shears used on a wig, not actual growing hair. I'm not sure it would do anything other than cause splits though.
