Does brown gel have any redeeming value?

Is there anything at all about brown gel that keeps it from being full of suck? Any saving grace? Or is it just doomed to the pits of evil hair product hell?

Hmmm... interested in the answers. I've never used that brown gel a day in my life and clear gel (with the visible bubbles) has only been put in my hair a couple of times. I'm not sure that any gel, other than aloe gel, has redeeming qualities for hair.

Protein is the only redeeming quality IMO. Oh, when you use only a dime sized amount, it will give your hairstyle hold without being hard.

Fantasia IC Thick N' Shine Gel is pretty damn awesome. It has keratin, silk protein and wheat protein, as well as aloe and shea butter and other good stuff. It also has the chemical-y ingredients, but :ohwell:

It doesn't dry out my hair or make it incredibly hard, gives nice hold and makes the curls pop like crazy. I definitely like it more than Olive Oil Ecostyler. Not even a competition. :yep:

Back in the day people swore it gave them some growth. I had a soror that big chopped in college and she put it in her hair everyday for waves and curls and her hair did grow back really fast.

i think if used in small doses and/or diluted with water it might be good to slick edges. also, if your wearing braids with synthetic or fake hair, you can use it to tame fly-aways instead of dipping braids in hot water/burning them.

But whatever its value, i dont think i'll ever use it again in my hair.

I used to hate the brown gel but my lil sis put me on to Softee and I've used it for wash and go's combined with Scurl and I have nice soft defined curls. I still use Eco some time though because it is easier to wash out.

i used it for years and never had a problem. i got the best definitinion with my curls on short hair...i used to use it with any oil or butter i was using at the time and i never had issues. i found it worked best when my hair was about 1/2in-2in long. after that, i didn't really know how to handle my hair. i suspect i may try it again when my hair is longer, but i get the same results with eco styler.

wasn't until i came to LHCF that i learned it was 'the debil'.....

When I was relaxed (maybe I was texlaxed because my hair wasn't bone straight?) I used it to wash and go in high school. I would wet my hair, rake some brown gel through it, and get to scrunching. lol. I thought I was too cute.

I used to love it back in my highschool days. But I wasn't too crazy about the smell. Especially when it rained. It's like I could smell the gel all day. And the brown flakes! Ugh!

It's super cheap and it has crazy hold. It can also be found at about every black BSS. If EcoStyler didn't come in clear, I would probably keep a jar lying around. ;)

It grew my hair. maybe it was the fact that it encouraged more brushing of the hair?

Does the protein in the gel actually strengthen your hair by bonding to it?

I'm not sure if protein gels do that.

It makes the edges look thicker a la Janet! and Jackson, if your nasty. Whew, I feel putting my hair in some poetic justice chunky braids, and slicking down my baby hairs! :reddancer:

Back in Jr high and hs, Pro-Style was only 2nd to Vaseline...dang.

Hated the medicine-y smell then and you couldnt pay me to put that back in my hair. Never had probs with breakage though... was probably the Vaseline.

I think because I wet my hair first then slicked it down, it locked in moisture. It's when I would pile gel on top of gel that caused it to break. Even when I would see it breaking, I would think those are part of my 100 per day that is suppose to break off.

Isn't hindsight a wonderful thang! :look:
