I may not always be right, but I'm never wrong.
If I put acv in a hair with a perm will it strip the perm out of the hair?

err

Op you've been here too long...

I don't post on this side and I am natural. My stepmother wanted to know so I asked. If you can't/won't answer the question asked then you could keep your post to yourself.

No, you can't strip the perm from your hair, but you can strip the hair from your head with a vinegar solution that is too strong.

I like vinegar rinses and do them from time to time. I mix about a 1/2 capful to 16oz. of water. I prefer using aloe vera juice for a low pH level that closes the cuticle.

Once when I was natural and didn't understand what I was doing with vinegar, I used about a 50/50 solution and it made my hair so rough and dry I knew I had to have done something wrong. Vinegar can strip away and crack the top layer/cuticle of your hair, leaving the strands exposed and damaged.

Thanks. I will tell my stepmother, also I will be careful when I do my rinses.

I googled this question and the consistent answer is that vinegar stripping relaxer is only a myth. I did run across this interesting article though:

http://www.rihefra.com/african_american_hair_vinegar

Could not copy and paste but the article states that Dominicans (stylists maybe?) use vinegar mixed with shampoo to wash the hair after rinsing out a relaxer. They then rinse, apply a protein treatment, rinse and then apply leave in. I wonder if anyone has tried this?

I am transitioning and have used vinegar rinses. My permed hair did not revert.

Some of the self-relaxers here use ACV to neutralize ... they all love the results

^^^ that's what I was gonna say. ACV is good for closing the cuticles. It speeds up the neutralizing process, Which is why many self relaxers use it. But I don't think it's possible to strip a perm. Once those bonds are gone, they're gone. Cuz trust me if I could take my perm out without transitioning or losing any length I'd be natural by now.

does anyone know how much vinegar to mix with the shampoo?

i clicked the link listed above, and they didn't mention how much.

No,I have a relaxer and when my hair gets tangly I use a tablespoon of ACV with water after DCing and it does help. I rinse it out after 30 seconds.

I tried this yesterday. I used 1Tbsp of vinegar in 2 quarts of water. The results were amazing. Hth, I'm natural btw.
