To what temperature do you set your flat iron?

I don't understand how you can get kinky curly hair that straight with such a low temp. I need a tutorial!
I've only blow dried my hair prior to straightening once and it did get straighter than when I dried in braids or whatever but even still, I needed at least 350 to get that.

I use my GHD (rarely) and I've learned on another thread, they stay between 350-370 (they have no heat setting).

My Maxiglide set to 5 is about 320 degrees F. I usually don't go any lower (and rarely higher) than that.

manter26..how many passes do you use on each section? 200 seems a little low for my hair even when I was relaxed but I'm wiling to give 320 a try

I probably do 2 passes, max 3...occasionally using steam. If the hair is straight, I move on to the next piece. I think a lot of people just keep running the flat iron over the hair out of habit instead of doing it only when needed.

HeyFranHey linked a great article on flat iron temps. I can't find it on her tumblr now unfortunately. The article used empirical evidence from studies done on wool (which is very similar to hair) and 320 was within the temp range for reversible straightening.

200 is too low imo. I have set my either 340-360 depending on which flatiron I use. The only way to get natural kinky hair straight like that either rollersetting then flatironing or the hair is heat damage/trained.

Thanks Manter..u introduced me to a new blog.. this is why it doesn't hurt to ask.. theres always new info out here!

Maxiglide conversions:

1 = 234 degrees
2 = 255
3 = 277
4 = 298
5 = 320
6 = 342
7 = 363
8 = 385
9 = 406
10 = 428

I guess I should turn down the maxiglide :look:. I have used it above 5 many times, but my hair reverts if I even slightly sweat or go out in the heat. Hell, if I cook in the kitchen or take a shower, it reverts. Hmmm .. . . .

Wonder what her definition of straight is:perplexed because i really cant see true KINKY hair getting straight with the heat she suggested

Im going to need to see a video.....:look::lol:

200 degrees? i am not doing a DC. i need at least 325 relaxed and around 360 for natural hair.

Maybe really small parts at a time could work? I use a FHI Runway and have no idea what the temp is as it only has one setting but my hair always reverts without a problem and I don't have to pass more than two times on my new growth and once on my relaxed hair.

^^ Same for me. My hair is really fine and really soft. 200-anything ain't doing nothing but giving my hair a deep belly laugh.
Maybe it's more so if you have a silky texture? The front and nape of my hair is silkier and that definitely gets straight at a lower temp - usually around 300 or so, but my crown, which is coarser, definitely needs 350-365. I could probably lower it if I did more passes (I only do one), but 200? :nono:

Perhaps she meant 300-350. I hope it was a typo b/c I don't think its possible to get hair straight on 200 anything-- unless you already have a nearly straight/smooth hair texture. I've been to that salon and it was "ok". The stylist didn't know what co-washing was. Trust and believe they didn't use anywhere near 200 b/c that iron nicked my scalp a few times and it was hottt; they had to pull out the marcel flat iron for my hair and double up w/the plug in flat iron. I read really good reviews and did research and chose carefully but I think thats a wrap on my salon experience. They used those same "Davines" products on my hair. I would love to hear an lhcfer review of Davines, I never heard of it and my hair didn't seem to respond to the conditioner that well.

When I was natural, I straightened at 250 until I read girls were using more heat. I was shocked as hayle b/c I kept coming across warnings of heat damage. My hair is a puffy, kinky, cooky 4b/4a mix, but the front and back are easily manipulated with pulling.

exactly, I ve only flatironed my natural hair 2 times and both times and 200 saw no change at all. 350 - 375, one pass at my nape and front 2 passes else where.

I just recently relaxed and starting using heat again. The last two time I flat ironed on the lowest setting, 248 degrees. My hair barely gets straight, I'm going to try 284, the next one up, the next time I flat iron.

I hope it was a typo as well, because otherwise thats a very misleading statement...sounds like BS actually. People will tell potential and current clients anything to make them feel better about their services.

I needed this thread. I plan on straightening my hair for the first time this Christmas, so needed some ideas! And my hair is hella kinky! So I will most likely skip 200 degrees and try 300!

My hair would laugh at 200 degrees and leave flat iron plates kinky! :lachen: 400 and above works best for me but then again I only straighten a couple of times a year.

I do like 250-300 if I use a flat iron. But I'm relaxed. However I use it on my roots between stretches after a rollerset and it gets pretty straight.

200 degrees on my hair would just get it warm.
Def not straight.
