Paper bag rollers...Do they work, anyone tried this?

Yep, paper bag makes very nice, tight curls. And it's much easier to sleep on these than with rollers. When I used to do this, I'd apply my hair grease and water, setting lotion or whatever I was using and roll it up. I've used this method on natural and relaxed hair.

My grandmother and sister would do this. It worked pretty well; resulting in tight curls. Neither of them had long hair though.

What is paper bag rollers? Are you referring to rollers wrapped in paper covers?

no these . Rip it, Twist it, you have paper rollers. Ive heard nothing but good results from these, super curls, but I want to know what the ladies on here think about them.

Thanks so much! Ok, how long did the curls last, did they fall apart in the middle of the day like mines do when I use flexi rods or any othe rollers?

We used these back in the day probably because we ran out of rollers. It does give a tight curl because obviously the paper is twisted small so the curl is small. They last pretty well. I don't think we did it often because the curl was really tight and we didn't usually wear our curls that tight.

I did this only a few times when I had in a set of really small box braids. Depending on how thick u make the strips, that determines the size of the curls. Mine came out nice and lasted about 2 days before looking questionable. They're also very easy to put in (in my opinion). I thought about trying it on my natural hair but I'm a little afraid of how it would turn out :X

I never had to worry about curls falling apart. If anything I wished it would fall apart!

Agree with the above. If I covered my hair at night, those curls could last a week. I'd make mine tight, then finger comb to loosen them up. As days passed, it would loosen up on its own. If I didn't like the way some looked, I'd just place a paper roller here and there. At the time, I knew nothing about wrapping, but wrapping these kinds of curls would give you the body that you want and the curl. Same with relaxed hair, I would just bonnet my hair at night.

Do you think this is becuase the paper dried the ends out to the point of breakage?
Granny was never particularly interested in hair health. She had fine 3b/c hair that she would put water and vaseline or Dixie Peach in and maybe plait it. She wash it with whatever was around be that Suave or Dawn. As for sis, I think the meds she was on may have played a role in her hair not growing very long.

If I were doing it, I'd probably lightly dampen the ends and then seal with shea butter or coconut oil.

I was just thinking it would take a whole lot of paper bag to do it on longer hair. I wasn't trying to imply that it would be detrimental for longer lengths. Sorry about that.

As long as you try to seal in some moisture before setting you should be good.

kellistarr I'd also have to agree with you about them being MUCH easier to sleep on than real rollers. Though u should be careful because sometimes the corners of the paper will poke your scalp. All u have to do is move them and you're fine.

Also, unless you're tryna get a "Wash-and-set" look you don't have to put the paper bag rollers in neatly. I just took a random section of braids and wrapped and they came out awesome.

My grandma had shoulder length hair . She did this most every night.

paper bag rollers are great! you can control the size of the roller and they make the ends of twist look great for people who's hair may not coil at the ends

I’ve used this method religiously in high school and undergrad, albeit my preference for loose leaf paper rather than paper bags.

The curls they produce will be tighter than a church lady’s press-n-curl, but you can counteract this effect by: (1) using large bunches of hair per curl; or (2) only applying the curl paper to the very ends of the hair. I used the latter method to bump the ends of my braid-outs.

I used this method often when I was relaxed with very good results however; as a 4b natural, I have not used this technique for my roller sets.

My mom used to do this a lot when I was little and it worked great. She did it on wet natural hair. I'm actually thinking of trying this soon.

The bold is :lachen: you''re telling the truth! Ladies I never thought about using these to roll up my twisted ends or for bumping ends. This is good.

I remember my mother using this back in the day. Adora your hair is so thick and beautiful, and if you took large pieces of your hair, roll them in paper bag rollers but don't leave them in so long if you don't want tight curls, I betcha your hair would look so pretty.
