It seems like people only do twists. I'm a 4b natural. They make my hair get tangles and ssk's so bad. Is there anything else I can do? My hair is about SL stretched. I can't really do a bun without it being super tight. Any suggestions?

I have the same reaction with twists
so I do individual braids with my natural hair
under a wig...
Also you can do braid n curl
bantu knots
cornrows

well, you already do lots of braid-outs and twist outs so why not get some hairpins and experiment with pinning your hair up. check out naptural85's yt for ideas

I do twist n curls. The first day I wear it out (kind of like a chunky afro) the next day pin it up and leave it like that for a couple of days. I might also put the goodie bands, 2-3 spaced out, around my hair too. My hair is almost APL.

Yeah I'm subscribed to her. I actually do wanna experience more with hairpins and make some sort of updos. Thanks!

I might have a professional try it, but I think my hair is not dense enough and too fine for the nice twists I see pictured on this site. So I can't do twists either.

My hair is just barely long enough for buns... Well if I use the sally's donut (I covered one with silk material to protect my hair. I still worry that my ends are RIGHT at the band I tie around to secure it. But you could try that donut bun.

I also made a pin curl bun that worked well that I got from a blog. You pull your hair back into a pony. Then you divide it into 4 parts.. a top and a bottom and two sides. You roll (pin curl) the top up and bobby pin it. Then you roll the bottom and pin it. Then you TWIST the sides over each other and then roll them and pin them. It looked pretty good. I will try to find the video I saw.

I also wear one french braid down the back of my head, and 2 along the sides, parted on the side. I tuck the end of my braid under the rest of my hair and pin it. I have experimented with the french braids... doing one that goes all the way around to behind my ear... etc. I got that idea from the CuteGirlshairstyles you tube channel.

I'm probably not very helpful. But maybe I'll but this thread so others can give us both ideas.

Here I am with the 2 "french" braids in Jan 2010. My camera skills suck so you can't see much.

Definitely try various updo's. Check out Sunshower143 on YT... her cinnabun tutorial is good.

This one too. Thanks guys! I get tired of retwisting and braiding every night for a style the next day. :spinning:

OP, i totally understand where you are coming from.
I have just purchased an afro phony pony from Freetress. It is huge. Below is a picture. i gave it a major trim to make it smaller and the hair that i cut off was enough to make two more!!! The curls closer to the base are slightly looser so that made me even happier. Oh, and because of the texture i didn't need to worry about making it perfectly even - i just snipped away and it's now the perfect size for me. I will post a pic tomorrow when i wear it to work.

I am wearing it to the side like how this lady wears hers and i love the look.

I think i will look into buying children's pony tails as the adult ones are sooo huge.

Hey pook, if you can get in a teeny bun/pony I would invest in some fake hair.

And I'll quote myself from the newly natural thread

I tried an old favorite of mine today, the gelled bun. I got tons of compliments today. I cowashed with trader joes nourish spa, left some of the conditioner in, and slicked my hair back with ecostyler gel. I used marley kinky twist hair for the ponytail. I used MsTanish1's tutorial found here http://youtu.be/Oqncg_9xOec

Now for some pics

ETA you could also do a scarf/turban.

What about flat twisting or cornrowing your own hair into a into a pontail? Then you could tuck the ends of the braids under and have a smaller bun, or do what others have suggested and cover it with a phony pony.

That style could easily last for 2 weeks, possibly more if you made the cornrows small enough.

Foxglove how did you secure the pony? With bobby pins? That looks good! I must have missed your post in the Newly natural thread. I will buy one next week.
@Foxglove , MsTanish1's tutorial has given some ideas - i didn't realise it was easy to add hair like that.
I will check Mstanish out too. I like her.

I know how to flat tiwst. :yep: That is a good idea. Then when the style gets old I can wear a twistout and redo it again. Thanks for the ideas guys.

The pony puff comes with a drawstring and two small combs. I've never had a problem with it coming off. The bun I copied from MsTanish1 I secured with about 6 pins and it stayed on all day and stayed on while I was jogging

You can also braid. Have you tried the SouthernTease bun? You wouldn't have to worry about tension like a more traditional bun.

I'll definitely miss your 'out' styles, but protective styles are pretty too.

I think it would be too hard to do the southern tease bun. But maybe if I blow it out a little first to get it to work more easier it may work. :yep: I used to do this bun when I was relaxed.

I tried the southern tease, but I think you need a lot more hair than what I've got to make that work.

I bought a more spirally (sp?) kids pony tail for only £2.99. i brushed it out to look a bit more natural. If i wear it tomorrow i'll post another pic. My hair is really short in the front so i have to wear a headband to control the 'kick up' of hair.

I'm natural. I tried putting a banana clip in my hair and it wouldn't snap, and it pulled my edges too tight! I think I'll put my hair in a ponytail first and then put the clip on.
