My hair has gone bananas. This is the longest it's been since I've been natural, but it just feels so icky. I'll moisturize it and it'll feel good for a few days, but then it gets yucky again. Not to mention it sheds like crazy. Everytime I touch my hair, I have hair on my hands! Not happy. Idk what to do....I did color my hair a few days ago, but my hair has been acting out for MONTHS. I did the Aphogee 2 Step a few weeks ago, and last night I did Roux Porosity Control and an overnight DC with Aphogee 2 min. Idk what the problem is y'all! Has anyone else had this issue?

Well let me say exactly what the issue is:
My hair sheds (or breaks:perplexed ) A LOT
It doesn't hold moisture as long as I think it should (I never moisturize daily though, maybe that's the problem)
My ends are rough

You know what I'm thinking...maybe I should relax my hair (P A U S E), then transition after a few months (PAUSE AGAIN) lol. Seriously. Yes, that will be costly and possibly a waste of time. But I think I'd be sooooooooo much more prepared if I do it that way. I'd relax in September (After I baby my hair for the rest of August), at a Salon of course (I know I'd mess my hair up). I would get a touch up in November or December, then I would start transitioning in....January. Idk what styles I would wear...but...I know that my hair would be healthier than it is now....

OP why would you think to relax hair that is already breaking... I have never understood that logic :nono:

any way it sounds like protein overload that is probably why your hair may be brittle and snapping at the touch. I think using a 2 min product overnight was a BAD idea.

Sounds like you need a good moisturizing condish to balance your hair

Also, do you seal your hair with an oil to lock moisture in? if not perhaps you should :yep:

I agree with the above poster. Maybe too much protein/too little moisture.

If you really want to go natural, I'd suggest giving it 2 - 3 years (if you haven't already). If at that mark, you still have a lot of basic questions about your hair or you don't like the way it feels, then heat train, relax, texlax, texturize.

If going natural is not a goal, then just relax if you want to once your hair is healthy.

What kind of hair dye did you use?

sounds like a lot of protein going on.
maybe clarify, then do an oil rinse followed by a moisturizing deep condition. Your hair will feel like butter.

I would not go the chemical route. It might make things worse.

yeah i find that natural hair rarely needs that much protein ever. THe bonds havent been broken so its not necessary to do all that. Do a deeeep dc on dry hair with heat (like under a dryer with a plastic cap) with a condish that has NO protein. do a search, there are plenty out there.

I'm weird. When my hair began to break, it was due to the lack of protein. I started using MNT as a leave in or for cowashes from time to time and I'm good.

Ok, did I read you correctly? Your hair is dry and shedding and so you want to RELAX (a.k.a. break down the bonds of your dry shedding hair). I don't have anything against relaxers at all, but I just don't think its the corrective action you should take for hair that's having issues.

At anyrate, I know you mentioned protein but maybe you should DC or do a hot oil treatment. Have you started using anything new on your hair? If not, it may just be that you may need to moisturize more often than you are accustomed to doing. Has your diet changed, or did you stop taking suppliments that you were once taking and you may want to look at your water intake.

When was the last time you had your ends trimmed? It happens pretty often that women go natural and the salon visits end completely. That's not a bad thing but you may find that your ends are bad and without a stylist to point it out, you may think you are having a hair emergency.

I've been natural since 2008...when I first went natural my hair LOVED protein...like looooooooved it! That's why I use it so much now. I love being natural, but now idk. My hair has never acted like this before. The relaxer comment was just a dream lol.

Hmmmmm. I do seal when I moisturize. I was hiding my hair for the whole year up to June, and it grew from my the top of my ears to the bottom of my neck. I thought I was doing great, but after I started wearing it out again...things got ugly smh.

And to be honest, I haven't done anything differently! Pretty much the same products/type of products. I just don't know y'all. And what really PISSES me off [yes, I'm a bit upset lol] is when I first went natural in 08 I dyed my hair BLEACH blond at least 5 times in a two year span, an my hair was in heaven. I used Aphogee faithfully, an I moisturized and sealed daily. I did protein treatments every 6 weeks, and my hair never broke off! Wait...I think the 3rd time I overlapped bleach on my hair a few clumps came out, but believe it or not after an overnight Aphogee 2min DC, it was like butta!

Smh. I'll take heed to your advice. I'll rinse the Aphogee out and add a lot of moisture. And I guess keep it twisted/braided up. I'm just baffled by this.

Thanks for posting ladies!

Hmmmm I've never had my ends trimmed since I've been natural. I was planning on waiting until I straighten it when my hair gets longer.

Your hair probably responded so well to the protein treatments in the past because the bleach blond color stripped the bonds in your hair. Now that you aren't bleaching your hair (I assume... you didn't really say) the same protein regimen is probably too much for it to handle.

When was the last time you clarified or chelated?

Product build up can cause breakage. :yep:

You should also start deep conditioning regularly as well as moisturizing daily. The color + protein needs something to balance it. If not, your hair will continue to break and feel 'icky' to you.

Okay. Thanks ladies. I'm gonna start anew tonight. I'll clarify with Sauve, then DC with the Lutrasilk Mango & Shea Butter Cholesterol mixed with Olive Oil. Probably overnight or a few hours. Then I'll rinse & apply my leave in glycerin/aloe vera gel/water mix and seal with my shea butter/castor oil/glycerin/Idk what else is in there mix. I'll let it dry in braids and keep them in for a day or two (I'll keep it twisted or braided up all week). I'll moisturize them throughout this week and next week with my leave in spray and Qhemet Biologics Amla Cream when needed. I'll be back in 2 weeks to report my progress =)

If you haven't already checked it out at the library, you might wanna read, "the science of black hair". It's a great book and will give you the "why" behind your hair freaking out and how to correct that issue. To me, w/ the info you shared, sounds like protein overload.

Just a suggestion: baggying

I had a minor freak out last week (slight protein overload and I was slacking on moisturizing). I sprayed my Jane Carter Leave in/Aussie Moist/fresh aloe mix and baggied under my wig. My hair felt a lot better by the time I came home from work.

And Good luck! Looking forward to reading about your progress.

I get a similar issues sometimes. I can just run my fingers through my hair and several strands come out and they'll keep coming out until I stop. I coated my hair in olive oil and put it in a shower cap for a few hours, shampooed/cond, rinsed and when I brushed hardly any hair came out. Maybe you can try olive or coconut oil, your hair might be dry.

Oh and for the shedding, have you tried garlic?

Sometimes supplements help. Once I squeezed the garlic from my gelcaps out into the conditioner in my hands and used that to stop shedding. It seemed to work, but I was never really sure if that stopped the shedding or if I had just gotten all of the loose, shed strands out already.

I know it hasn't been two weeks, but it seems like my hair has transformed over night! Seriously! I really think 95% of my products have protein in them. Smh! I clarified with Suave Naturals, and DCed overnight in braids with Lutrasilks Cholesterol with Shea Butter and Mango mixed with a lot of olive oil, rinsed this morning, moisturized with my leave in spray (lots of tea tree EO, glycerin, water, & aloe vera gel) and sealed with Qhemet Biologics AOHC. My hair felt amazing. My ends felt a little rough though, so I just clipped them off lol. I know it's probably uneven, but my ends feel better than they have in forever, and it's gonna be twisted/braided/hidden for months so it won't even matter.

And the funny thing is, the solution was so simple, but it flew right over my head lol. Thanks for the help ladies =)

Glad to hear your doing better!

My hair is naturaly very very dry. I have found that simply is best
I am 4 a/b natural. been natural since 2007.

I don't use protein products I suffered major damage a year ago using the aphogee 2 min reconstructor too much.

I would suggest you find some low to no maintaince styles and leave your hair alone for 3 months.

keep it simple EVOO and leave in conditioners

Do you baggy at nite? that really helps keep my hair moisturized

Good luck keep us posted
