Is such a thing possible? Do you know anyone who has done this. I'm trying to figure out what the heck to do to my hair and I'm exploring many options.

im sure curly permed haired is double processed so relaxing before seems a little worrying:perplexed

Well I bye no means am an expert on hair. In fact im a newbie but I think that may be too many chemicals

That's a Definite NO!!! It's one or the other. I'm licensed and the two chemicals actually don't mix. You shouldn't even put a perm on previously relaxed hair in general or vice versa.

I have a curly perm & I, too, agree, that you can't/shouldn't mix the two. There's another member on here with a curly perm - HoneyA. She has transitioned/is transitioning from a curly perm to texturizing by having her new growth done with the relaxer only.

It's possible & a great option for girls who like wearing their hair down... in the sink.

The chemical im a curly perm is thioglycolate, and one of the most common for relaxers is sodium hydroxide ..these chemicals are NOT compatible. You will literally melt your hair.

Just curious how does your hair react to the curly perm? does it form a loose curl like when someone with straight hair gets it? I dont mean to sound ignorant but I've never heard of a black girl getting a curly perm.

So I'm under the impression the idea that this is not a good idea. Lol! Double signing on blondemane's post, please tell us more about your curly perm nakia.

Curly perm is a jheri curl.

I don't think the curly perm would take because the hair would be too over processed? Why not just have a curly perm? Are you trying to wear your hair straight without a curl activator?

I'm going to agree with everyone else on the board, don't do it. Just step away from the jeri curl until your relaxer has grown out.

If it's the look that you like, I'm pretty sure you could get a weave or wig with a similar texture.

If you're natural why would you get a curly perm? Is your hair not curly already? Or do you want larger diameter curls?

21 months natural and loving it!

All I can think of is the "esteem" perm, and I hear the song from the commercial: "one month, it's curly, the next one it's straight, with new Esteem, the change is feeling great!" Sorry. I have no info. I think this product has been gone for a while, but it's the only thing I know of that had a similar effect.

FYI. My hair is 100% Natural if that wasn't totally clear already.

I'm baffled then. Are you just asking about relaxing then curly perming out of curiosity? If you like the look of the curl I say go the relaxed/texlaxed route with that you can do straw sets etc to get the curl you want or flat iron etc for a straight look. A curly perm is not that flexible.

As a matter of fact dont ever get a jheri curl

Why do you say that? If I ever considered getting my hair chemically processed, I woud not hesitate to get a jheri curl aka curly perm. What gave them the gross factor is pple using too much "juice". If you didn't go crazy, your hair just looked as if you had big curls. nakialovesshoes had photos of her curly perm and if I didn't know better, I would think she naturally had type 3 hair.

nadaa16 Yes, bigger curly diameter that allows more "hangage" is one reason why someone might get a curly perm. The looser curls also mean less tangling too and maybe less breakage if you are the sort of person who loses patience and yanks a comb through your hair.

Riverrock, not sure what your thought process is but when they are processing your hair for a curly perm (aka jheri curl), they first straighten your hair chemically, then wrap it around rods to set it into a curly shape. So if the end result you want is curly hair, you do not need to relax it first. You can just go straight to the curly perm.

If you want looser curls, why not transition to texlaxed?

It's "curly" as in coily. I'm guessing I'm in the 4b range. But then people say 4b doesn't have any sort of curl pattern, but I definitely have s curls all over my head. The back definitely has looser curls but the only time my coils show easily is when it is drenched with conditioners or really really, like freakishly moisturized, which is rare. So I'm thinking I'm 4ab. My hair I assume, if it ever stayed really really really moisturized and elastic would look like this. I hope she doesn't mind me posting her pic.

I was planning on trying to get a texlax to reduce some of the bulks and make my texture a little bit looser. I do not want straight hair whatsoever. Just curls that hang a little bit and aren't so tight. However, after reading some texlax threads, I am under the impression that girls with coils like mine don't really end up with less curly hair, just 4b hair that looks like it is lightly blown out. I don't want that. At all.

No I'm asking because I'm trying to figure how I can successfully get rid of some of this bulk but maintain some curls and coils without having to shingle alot and stuff like that. I don't want to be doing straw sets. That's too much work for me. I'm very very lazy and working with my hair texture is making me even lazier when it comes to hair. I am trying to figure out what I can do to my hair before I end up doing something stupid like shaving it off. And twists and things, maybe I'm just not good at doing them, but they look awful on me. They never end up looking nice.

As someone else asked, hothair, are you saying that you can't straighten a curly perm with a blow dryer or a flat iron?

Yeah, Nakia's hair looks lovely with the curl.

Nonie, I had no idea that is how they do it. I thought that it was mostly white girls/asian girls with straighter hair and obviously there is no need to really straighten their hair. I didn't realize that black girls got curly perms. I thought that a jherri curl was completely different from a curly perm and just some super moisturizing chemical treatment or something that made the curls looser, like a texlax really but ultra moisturizing.
