Could I train my hair to hang? :look:

My twistouts and braidouts kinda go out instead of down. I'm a SL natural. I ALWAYS wear my hair in a puff or pulled back. But now I want to start wearing it down, but it keeps wanting to go backwards.

I was thinking of wearing a scarf at night instead of my bonnet to keep my hair 'down'. I also have fine hair, so that may have alot to do with it. There's no weight to it. I do notice that after I use AO conditioner my hair hangs afterwards. Just for a couple days though. I have a braidout in now and it's hanging somewhat. But the effects wear off after a few days. :perplexed

I don't know about training it to hang down but styling options can help it hang down in certain directions. Typically if you want to keep your braid outs or twist outs stretched people either rebraid, retwist, pineapple or do something that helps the hair stretched.

I am typically in twists which don't hang naturally. I stretch my twist by combining them in a flat twist or cornrow going towards the back. If I braid them towards the back they will then hang towards the front.

So using a combination of stretching (braiding, twisting, pineappling) and positioning (which direction i am braiding, twisting, pineappling) helps me get the hair to hang a certain way.

HTH

You can stretch your twistouts by using flexirods on the ends. Thats how I did it.

Yeah, I'm just going to be a little more patient. It is starting to hang more than usual as time goes by, but sometimes I get so frustrated. My hair automatically has a cedrtain position it wants to go. :nono:

No ma'am, I don't think so. You are a type four and in general when you are talking about tight nappy hair, our hair usually shoots up and out for Heaven. The only thing that causes your hair to start to hang down more is as others have said, a little length being added to your stretched hair which will help your hair to hang a bit more when it is stretched. But even then, if humidity hits your hair, it is going to shrink back up again. But that is why I love the versatility of type 4 hair so much: big BAA one day, and shrunken fro the next if you want. What more could you ask for?

You're right about the bolded. And sometimes I do want the shrunken look. I don't know what the hell I want. I just really wanted my hair to hang today.

My hair only started to hang down once it got past shoulder length. However, If I wear my hair down it slowly draws back up to around neck length in a couple of days. But I love my hair when it shrinks.

doing braid-outs on wet hair with flexirods on the ends gives me quite a bit of hang. really smoothing my hair out while wet with the denman and lots of foam wrap helps a lot.
i think we may have different textures though..but it's worth a try.

Here's what I do to have "hang":
After heavily moisturising and sealing hair, I blowdry each section on cool/warm air. As I blowdry, with my fingers I pull my strands straight..it loosens up the curl, and it ends up showing more length/hang.

pookaloo83, the only way I know to make my hair hang is twist it...wash it in twists and let it drip dry in twists. Then it will hang. I haven't done a twist-out so I don't know if it'd continue hanging if I did. My strands are so fine that I think undoing twists would have it floating up and standing as previously in my "Tree of Joshua" pic. (No respect for gravity whatsoever!) :giggle:
I do twist-outs on bare hair and the last time I did, I wet my twists  so I ended up with no waves...just puffs  ...but there was a bit of hang.

This is another twist-out done 2 years prior to the one above and again no product in hair but I also didn't wet the hair here so better wave definition and still got some hang:

If I use products, this is what my twist-outs look like :lachen:

^^ co-signing this a bit. I was gonna suggest using a little bit of heat...not that I'm an advocate of it, cuz I'm not, but it should work if you know what you're doing. I'm sure the ladies in the heat training thread should be able to give you some tips.

A couple of weeks ago I did a blowout for my 1 year, and without really thinking about what I was doing, I twisted and sealed each mini-section with a little bit of QB AOHC to move it out of the way. When I took down the twists a few hours later, my hair was hanging down like I'd flat ironed it! Too bad it shrunk back up literally after 2 hours :ohwell:

Good luck pook!

I used to do this. Will have to do it again. This is on curlformers stretched hair.

Nonie I want it to look like this!

I stretch my hair after washing with curlformers. Blowdrying made it feel dry. But after a few days it will shrink and puff up again for the humidity. Oh well. It's not a biggie. I take the good and the bad with my hair. Just wanted to see if maybe there was a solution. My siggy I believe is on stretched hair as well. I may have to go the strecthing with heat route with the curlformers like I've been doing. It keeps the tangles at bay as well.

now what in the hayell is there to hate about this??
your hair looks soo thick!
honestly, i think in a few inches you'll have the hang you're looking for...even without using heat.

It's an illusion. You should see how fine my hair looks today. That's why I have to use heat for it to look full. :nono:

My hair is super fine and the only way my twistouts have some hang is if I clip both the ROOT and END of each twist with a duckbill clip until they dry. Keeps the roots from puffing and keeps the twists elongated.

my twist outs didn't start to hang until i was almost 2 years in da game.

@Nonie I want it to look like this!

@pookaloo83 Well, then do what I did. Made small twists (I think yours stand up coz they're thick; mine would too) and wore them for a bit. I'd CW in the AM and drape a towel around my shoulders so the water would drip down. So I'd have twists that hang and they'd stay hanging when dry:

I wore the twist-out when the twists got old and not so cute looking. So after they'd dripped dry, I undid them and didn't fluff them out. They don't feel dry because of the CW and nightly baggying.

pookaloo83 I use clips that are about a quarter the size of regular duckbills. Got a pack of 80 for like $2 at the local BSS. I normally do my hair at a time when I won't have to sleep on the clips. I do my twists smaller than most people I've noticed; I do that so they'll dry quicker. If I do have to go to bed (or out) I just sit under the dryer for a bit, or as a last resort, take the clips off the end and clip the ends to the roots (like a pincurl).

Have you tried banding your hair with ouchless bands? That's what I do and my twistour hangs similar to the way that Nonie's twists are hanging in the pictures.

I tried banding once and was kinda impressed. The only thing was that I didn't let my hair fully dry before I took the rubberbands out.

Thanks so much you guys for your help. I bobby pinned down my braids last night and they laid down and wasn't sticking up. Thanks GreenEyedJen and everyone for your input.

^The bobby pin method works too. I use that method to preserve my twistouts at night.

I saw your reply upthread regarding banding. Make sure you always let the twists dry fully before unraveling them, especially if you want them to hang down or if you're concerned about the poof factor.
