Help!!!!

I don't know what it is but my hair texture has changed in the back and it's breaking off. Everywhere else is fine but there is a section in the back that's very wavy texturized like I took a crimper to it and its filled with split ends and breaking off. I can even see the split ends when my hair is soaking wet. I flat iron my hair and those pieces won't go straight and they feel very coarse when dry. My hair is relaxed so everywhere else it just has a slight wave.

The worse thing is I think the section is spreading, since I've noticed pieces higher up doing the same thing. I'm not sure what happened because until now my hair had been growing quite a bit with very few problems. I went from sl to apl in two months. Thankfully my whole head isn't breaking, but I'm not sure what's going on that's changed those pieces. I've been using selsun blue moisturizing shampoo and pantene medium to thick deep conditioner, smoothing balm, and heat protection spray once a week. I get my hair relaxed every 6-8 weeks and flatiron it about once a week.

I've recently switched my shampoo and conditioner hoping that will help, but any advice that can be given would be nice.

The flatironing once per week for months could finally be taking its toll. Try air drying for a while and see if that helps.

I think you should have your ends trimmed, try cutting back on the heat usage and if you haven't done a protein treatment you should try that along with a moisturizind deep conditioner(at least once a week) and daily moisture. Pay close attention to the area of your hair that you notice a change in. Sounds like your hair needs some rest & babying.

Agree with all of this. Heat once a week is too much. Heat should be applied Max once a month IMO

Yes try trimming that area. Focus extra conditioner on that hair. Keep your hands off of it and hide it. Use moisterizer on it between washes.

How do you sleep? Meaning, do you wrap your hair up in a satin bonnet/scarf??

Are you wearing your hair in a ponytail or something that could be too tight and damaging that area?

I would suggest a good trim to get rid of the splits, moisturize that area really well as often as needed, and give the flat iron a little mini vacation (heat on a breaking area is bad news).

The back of your hair may also not like relaxing every 6 to 8 weeks. Next time try to wait 9 weeks, and the next time see if you can wait til 10 weeks.

This sounds like some sort of damage to me. It could be heat damage in those areas or chemical damage. hard to say w/o seeing. How is your porosity? That could help he cuticles to smoothe better. Do you Dc weekly? I think flat ironing 1 per week is fine as long as you are careful with the heat settings and weekly DC, but it sounds like you need to let your hair rest until you can tell what is going on. That first paragraph sounds very familiar; I learned the hard way.

Thank you to everyone for the advice! I'll try to lay off the flatiron and see what happens and maybe try some protein since I've never used any before. I've tried cutting it but I'm almost afraid that it's growing in that way, so maybe protein is what's needed. I've also read somewhere that pantene can coat the hair and cause bad reactions when processing. Anyone else heard anything like that?

As for my regime I sleep with a satin cap and I let my hair airdry. My flatiron isn't that hot I can actually touch it for a few seconds without it burning my hands. I've switched to Nexxus products until I can be sure what the issue is and I'm thinking maybe I should clarify?

Layoff the heat for now and when you do use it, use it on the lowest temperature possible on everything you do. You need to cut your hair to stop it from heavy breakage. Moisturize and see if that what it needs.
