Hey Ladies!

So I did the BC in Dec. 2010 after an 18 month transition. Went from SL to grazing MBL and after BC I was right around APL. I'm grazing BSB now fully stretched.

I'm really enjoying my natural hair, and decided to flat iron it for Mother's Day first time since being fully natural... I need HELP!! Total FAIL! Don't get me wrong, I love the thickness...my hair has never been so thick before. But since I was using heat, I was going for the silky straight look and it just didn't happen.

Any suggestions on getting my hair silking straight? I've watched WestNDBeauty's tutorial, I DC overnight (but did rollerset instead of blow dry) but my results were no where near the same. :ohwell: I did 1 pass with my Solia temp 375-390. A few times I did a 2nd pass mainly on ends.

Speaking of ends, they feel horrible when I straightened!! I got my roots/hair really straight until about 1/2 way down the hair shaft. I did a lot of search and destroy after straightening due to ssks. Have no idea how to make my ends not feel rough!

Ok so on to the pics:

Your hair looks great. It took me a while to figure out how to straighten my hair. What has helped me are good tools. I use a fhi blow dryer with heat protectant using the tension method. No hairloss and extra stress. Then I use maxiglade and with about two passes. Also, no oils has helped with body and swang. Keep trying until you find a regimen for you.

Also, your ends, you may need a light trim for knots and such. That should make it smoother

I am not fully natural, but my head contains about 3/4 of natural hair and I have come to realize that the first day I flatiron my hair, no matter the technique, it looks ridiculous. But when I go back over it to "fix" the situation about 2 days later it looks great.

I have no idea why.
So, what I do now is wash, condition, blow dry like usual. Then with my flatiron I go over my entire head in really big sections, with one quick pass and then I throw it up in a ponytail.
Then I wait about 2 days for my hair to I guess "settle and calm down" then flatiron again using tiny sections and comb chase. I cannot explain why, but I get sleek results this way. ridiculous I know.

Thanks for sharing this! I'm going to try this today!

OP your hair is so lush and thick! great job on the long term transition.

Thanks prettynatura! I flat ironed a few times while transitioning and my results were way better. I'm thinking it's because my relaxed ends were already straight. I probably won't flat iron again until the fall, but hopefully I'll have a better outcome. :)

Thanks Nerd for the info!

Great progress!

This may be unpopular opinion here, but maybe you need a higher temperature when flat ironing.

Thanks ladies for all the comments!

Thanks, kandiekj100 and I'm kind of thinking the same thing, although I don't want to increase the heat.

gorgeous hair! it has grown sooooo quickly! you look stunning too!

Aww thanks detroitdiva!

Beautiful hair! I am 3 months post transitioning and it's great to see you made it through! Thanks!

Thanks Newbie2Beauty! I'm glad I made it to 18 months! My original goal was 2 or 3 years but by 18 months I was ready to snip, snip. Best wishes to you on your transition!

Very pretty! Your hair looks very healthy too. Oh, and I like your hair accessories, so cute!

Thanks Spiffy! :)

Your hair is gorgeous and healthy looking!

Thanks Uniqzoe!

Wow, your hair is gorgeous and you are simply lovely to boot :yep:!

I tend to also agree that you may need more heat to flatiron. I tried for the longest time to flatiron at 350, then 375, then 395. All caused reversion, with the lower two temps the back of my hair would start to revert before I'd finished the top half! Then I said "screw it" and went to 425. SO much better :yep:. 1-2 passes, and I'm done.

I also rollerset, so I do a heavy DC under my steamer, use Lacio Lacio as my LI, two pumps of PM Super Skinny mixed with an oil blend, rollerset with just water and a hint of SAA, then flatiron. I'll often rollerset on one night and flatiron the next day, because I just can't spend that much time on my hair in one shot :lachen:. I flat iron with just a heat protecting spray and my hair comes out pretty good. HTH!

Your natural texture is really pretty!!! Beautiful eyes too......
I agree you may need a higher temp when flat ironing.

I would love to be SL when I BC! I love your hair. I need to really be more diligent with my hair care. Thanks for the inspiration. I am now more motivated!!!

WOW, I am in love with the idea of achieving shoulder length natural hair. I am unable to get the silky strait look as well, but I love how healthy it is. Your pics just inspired me to keep working on it.:yep:
