Any 4a's or B's Who Wear Twisouts/Braidouts Daily and Retaining?

I just completed my first week out of the closet--natural closet that is lol. For my first style ever as a natural I put in twists--but I don't like them. I don't feel pretty or feminine. But I can't deny how healthy this style is for the hair. I twisted on damp hair with some Mizani Butter Rich Cream and Blue Magic Coconut Grease. Soft, moisturized, unmanipulated, stress free hair for a week or longer. I mean I can't help but think how can I not retain with this style? Too bad I don't like it. C'est la vie.

:yep: :yep: I love twist outs and my hair does too. It would rather be soft, stretched and moisturized from twist outs than semi crunchy from wash-n-gos..

I had only been doing twist outs like 2-3 times for the last couple of years because I still felt like I was getting quite a few knots. But in the past week in a half, I've revisited them, and I am absolutely loving it. When I wash I make sure that I pull all of my ends down while I'm combing it out with conditioner and that has made all the different as far as tangles and knotting. I also stopped putting setting lotion (I was actually using Foaming Pomade and it made my hair gritty). I just put vatika oil and my hair is absolutely in love.

pookaloo83 how long have you been doing this for? i wore my hair in a braid out for the first time this weekend and got weave checked (by a white girl) we're good friends though, so it didn't bother me.

i think i might wear my hair out like that more often if this thread gets lots of good responses :yep:

Maybe you would feel feminine if your hair was twisted into a style. I know what you mean about feeling feminine.

I did twist outs a lot last summer after bc'ing and had no issues retaining. I like leaving my twists in now because I find it much easier to style (I'm lazy). I go back and forth between twists and twist outs though.

ChanelNo5 I know exactly what you mean about feeling feminine, bur once my hair started getting longer and I styled the twists into cute up dos, like in here, it became my preferred style.

ive been doing braid outs every week for the past month. before then i was doing wash and goes everyday and i retained just fine. now that ive been natural a little over 2 years i dont like washing and going everyday because its a lot of manipulation. when i mastered my braid outs i didnt have to do my hair but once a week which means very low manipulation.
and as far as i can tell im still retaining.
i moisturize my hair only that day i do the braids and it lasts all week, stays moisturized and shiny.

me. my edges don't like buns and i don't like twists on my fine/thin hair. so scalpy :nono:
as long as I DC on the regular, keep my ends stretched and moist, and don't let it become too tangled before wash day, I'll be good.

Yes, I'm a fine haired natural as well, that's why I don't PS often. Too scalpy.

I predominantly wear twistouts and braidouts and I think I'm doing pretty well with retention. I just try not to let it go too long without detangling it.

Hey pook!
I used to do twists every weekend and wore them for a week, but to be honest, as time passes and my hair gets longer, I think it becomes a little bit of a hassle. I think doing them as much as I did leads to too much manipulation and when it gets time to wash, I think it causes tangles and sometimes breakage at the ends, and I have to detangle much more often. I dont know, maybe it's me.

I've realized that buns are just the easier route for me, for now I do twistouts when I want to wear my hair 'out'. Special occasions. It takes longer than it used to now than before.

I have thin density hair as well. I noticed that when I make my twists smaller, I'm able to better cover up some of the "scalpyness" by placing my hair in a cute updo.

Oh and BTW, ut seems that I'm able to reatain length while doing twistouts as well. I prefer flat twistouts to singles though. They come out fuller.

I just put in some flat twists. I hope they come out right. :look:

i just put some braids in my hair. i decided to braid instead of twist, so my hair would stretch more. i hope it turns out cute tomorrow. if it does, i'll take a pic. i hope this works out for me because my hair can't handle wngs without the crazy tangles.

I'll be doing this from now on. I'll be cutting my hair off for the summer. Twists have tore up my hair (ends) and my edges don't do well with pulled styles.

I didn't have too many issues with knots, tangling as I thought I would. The key is making sure your hair stays stretched and detangle dry (with oil or mist it a bit) before you wash.
