Okay, so I was browsing the New Items at American Apparel (site is sometimes NSFW) and I found this as I was scrolling down.

This was the last thing I expected to see. I had to check to see if I was still on the same website!:lachen:

I've never bought Kinky Curly or Mane 'n Tail products, so I don't know if these prices are cheaper or more expensive than usual.

I just thought I'd share for the ladies who buy American Apparel clothes. It might save you shipping if you use these products, too.

HAHA. I wouldn't expect to see these products being sold through AA. I can't say that I'm shocked, though. They've been selling a lot of items other than clothes recently. Anything to stay afloat I suppose.

I guess so, lol!

It just made me think about that story that was posted a while ago about American Apparel only hiring black women with "nice" hair. Are there other reasons why these products (more so the KC than the M'nT) showed up on the website? :scratchch

There's probably no connection; just thinking out loud.

I see plenty of black hair products (hawaiian silky, murray's) and zero black models

That is so odd, especially since I know they've used natural and a few relaxed black models in their clothing ads.

What's really going on?

Maybe some of their reps comb sites and forums like this? This does seem to be coming out of left field.

^^ Where's the kinky and the curly? Are they sure they want AA customers or is this an attempt to broaden the customer base - i.e. to market to non-AA customers.

I'm so confused as to why a store that barely sells clothing but rather shears of fabric felt the need to also begin selling hair products.

I think it's funny how they used a model whose race is ambiguous (is she asian? samoan? pacific islander?), who does not have kinky or curly hair (hair appears to have been styled by a curling iron maybe or large rollers for a wavy effect) to promote a product targeted to Black women. That makes no sense. Not to mention it looks like a bad photoshop. They didn't even bother to hire a professional graphic designer to do the ad. Eh, I've never liked AA anyway. I always found them a little sleezy as a company and the way they market themselves overall.

wow they even have murrays beeswax & pomade and hollywood beauty products

here are their other KC ads:

but WHY is this their mane n tail ad???

Probably because we are going to be moving away from products just being strictly based on race. Targeting just one race serves a purpose if you are trying to capture a niche market, but broadening your advertisement campaign to include other racial groups helps to add to your profit and increase your market share. They can end up losing their base clientele by changing their approach, we'll see...

iri9109 LOOOOOOL at the MT ad! I think KC is just trying to market their brand for everyone, which I don't see an issue with. They make high quality, natural products, kinda trendy...AA is trendy...makes sense to me. They also sell KC at Urban Outfitters.

Okay...I'm on the AA site...they are also selling Burt's Bee's, Kiss My Face, Dr. Bronner's...the Murray's, Hollywood, and Hawaiian Silky are hella random...but I think they are trying to sell cult-type brands.

Yes some of the clothing are sheer pieces of fabric but it is for the purpose of layering; the way they model it is not really how it's going to be worn it's just to give a representation of what it looks like, etc.. A lot of the clothing is wholesome and covers well.

Anyway, I agree with you, it's pretty random some of the stuff they sell but I guess they're trying to get out of bankruptcy and expand their market. I shop there A LOT so this helps but there's nothing like this on their Canadian site as of yet.

How random. But I guess if this company is facing financial difficulty, I can understand why. Black haircare products are one of the biggest markets.

I was in Urban Outfitters a few days ago and saw Kinky Curly Knot Today. I don't use the product, but i'm not mad.

^^^ Checked Urban Outfitters website after I read your comment.

They sell KC products and Miss Jessie's :drunk: !
