Goodness...I wouldn't make it in New York because I am way too sarcastic. I do and say things that would get a person shot. I would purposefully wear an afro wig and when they asked if I wanted my hair braided, I would toss the afro their way and say, "Sure, braid this!" and keep it moving.

I hate hate hate this. For all of you ladies that think its funny you guys must not live in the area I live very close to 125th and it gets on my last nerve. I've tried ignoring them and just keep my headphones on but they will chase me down to give me their card. When my hair is in it's natural state I dont really get "hair braid" they ask me "You want your hair done?" It makes me feel like I look a mess.

Sidenote: I hate the summer when all the shops keep their doors open and the braiding hair flies out the store. It is so nasty to feel when i'm walking with sandal and my foot gets caught in some dirty stinkin hair erplexed

One last thing- They constantly harrass you to go to their shops and sometimes it is soo dirty in there. I was in one and there were 2 mice running around. I started screaming and they all looked at me and said "oh its not going to bother you" Like having mice running around is a regular thing

Well I actually wanna get my hair braided soon So does anyone know of any good or OK places that I can go to?? You can't beat those prices and I just make sure to yell out "ehh eh eh!! go easy on the edges" lol

My favorite spot used to be Billy Jeans, I'm not sure if they are still around.

It's the quintessential 125 St experience! I hate it w/ a passion sometimes, but at the same time it's their livelihood, and I'm not gonna take that away. Some of them don't have their papers, so for a lot of them it's the only job they can get. But I do hate how dirrty some of their joints are, and the smell of food in those places, as well as when you feel like they are talking about you and you can't understand what they're saying.

Oh em gee they be killing me with that hair braid crap! I know I shouldnt knock their hustle but they sometimes act like rabid dogs the way they chase people! Billie Jeans was the spot back in the day and has been around for YEARS!! I'm from Brooklyn and I used to go uptown for my braids and flat twist styles almost 25 years ago! That was way back when they were on 125th upstairs over the shoe store and he (BJ) was still alive, before all the Africans took over 125! BJ built a braiding empire (I believe he sold the name to the Africans)that's still around just not on 125 anymore BJ's is on Lenox bet 116 and 115 and I heard there is also a location in the Bronx too,BJ's always did a EXCELLENT job and the price was RIGHT!
I also used to go to these 2 sisters on 7th ave and 124 st that also did their thing those girls was FIERCE with the fishbraids!! Wonder if they're still around

@ the bold: You ain't never lied! We recently visited NY for spring break, everybody & their mama's was getting their grind on.

My sister and I live in northwest Los Angeles (Wilshire Boulevard), and we notice that too -- when we're in Manhattan. People in general have different forms of hustling there.

We normally stay in a hotel in Manhattan. We've never actually walked the streets of Harlem, though, but I would like to see what it is like.

The tour bus takes us through the area where the Cotton Club is and where Billy Holiday used to sing.

I always ask native New Yorkers when they visit L.A. about the Dominican hair products sold there. I used to long for that here, and I finally found a beauty supply store in L.A. that sells Silicon Mix conditioners. Now I don't have to place another order online.

Nevertheless, I rather see them hustling than robbing or killing. At least, they are trying to make a living. There's nothing wrong with that.

We love New York City. :superbanana: We wish we could live there about four months out of the year.

hahaha, they just trying to get pad for real. I just walk past because those days I braided every two months, I loved them and if the ones price wasn't competite I would just walk on and get the next girl, it works for those who love braids I used to be a braids whore that's why I hardly have any edges now
