... and OMG. My hair has never felt so dry, tangled, and rough in my life.
I've heard of multiple people throwing in an egg for an extra shot of protein and getting wonderful results. My hair has never, for as long as I have been styling it (since age 11), felt this horrible.
My hair is not protein-sensitive at all, so this came as a huge surprise to me. My hair usually adores protein. I don't know what happened.
I had to do serious damage control with the tangles but I don't think, as far as I can see, that I will suffer too much of a setback from this
Has anyone else experienced this? Just wondering what could have possibly happened.
But after this, I am officially a card-carrying, due-paying member of Team If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It.

You just need some moisture. Experiment with a couple different conditioners and do an oil wash until your hair starts to feels normal again.

I did this my last wash and had the same results pretty much. Never again. My hair was hard and a nightmare to detangle. And I had noticeable breakage which I haven't had in a while. Boo to eggs.

Ugh... it's so weird!
I've done hardcore protein treatments and my hair has loved it. My hair loves mild protein. My hair loves medium protein.
My hair just LOVES protein.
I don't know what's going on!!!!
I am DC'ing with a moisture condish now so I am hoping it will be okay in the morning. I will definitely not be trying that ever again. There were a few things I planned to try (ie. henna and cassia) but now I don't know if I should. Maybe after my hair gets back to normal and has been normal for a looooooong time but I don't know.

I've used a beaten egg with evoo before and loved it. Afterwards I had to use a good moisturizing DC and I was right as rain. :yep:

I didn't like it as much when I mixed it with a conditioner :nono:

Hope everything works out for you. :(

Thanks for the responses, ladies!
My hair feels much better now that it is tangle-free, so I hope it will be back to normal tomorrow. I may have to do a small trim since I got some breakage, but I will see how it plays out first.

So this is going to sound so crazy but I slathered my hair in lustrasilk organic cholesterol and braided my hair up last night and not only does it feel almost normal this morning but my braid-out is SOOOOO defined. It's crazy. Shoot... cholesterol might be my next styler.

whats in your conditioner?

if you just put and egg in a store bought conditioner, this may happen.

i add olive oil, 2 conditioners (and once a drop of honey) and mix it well.

also you have to do a heavy dc afterwards to restore moisture (but you know this)

I've nothing to add that the ladies haven't said...
I always follow up hard protein treatments (w/ eggs) with a thick moisturising conditioner to DC with. So after that your hair feels strengthened...and by the time you moisturise it it should feel soft.

I always follow up with a moisture DC, but usually protein treatments leave my hair feeling wonderful. Like my hair feels amaaaazing after the ApHogee 2-step. This is the first time this happened.
And it was egg, honey, olive oil, sweet almond oil, silk elements moisture treatment, and a bit of 2-min keratin. I've used the conditioners separately as well as with those oils and honey and never had a problem.

i dont know what to say. i never tried mixing egg with a regular conditioner but my mom would make a mix of egg, evoo and ripe avocado and i got good results.

When I was relaxed I put an egg in my conditioner once and it made my hair hard and tangled, and my hair LOVES protein so I was surprised my hair had this reaction. The same thing happened when I did a tea rinse. Those were two bandwagons I got off real quick.

I think the mix of egg AND 2min keratin was the problem...that was a lot of protein

Could be.... but I've mixed 2-min with plenty of other protein-rich ingredients and never had a problem. And I didn't even use a lot of that. Maybe 0.5 oz or so. Like I said, my hair loves protein.
Even after rinsing out hard protein treatments, my hair is smooth, soft, and velvety.
I don't know. I don't plan to find out, though, because I'm not trying it again! :lachen:
But thanks so much for your response.

I put egg in my henna the last time and it came out great. Not mindblowing great but it was the same as if I didn't. My hair I think is pretty indifferent to protein though. I balanced it out with some moisturizing ingredients and oils too though.

I haven't used cholesterol in forever and a day though. I may have to revisit that.

Sounds interesting Fhrizzball!
And I had been avoiding cholesterol because they usually contain mineral oil but this particular one (organic lustrasilk cholesterol w/ argan oil) doesn't have any so I felt comfortable using it.

that's the exact reason I stopped using it too.lol

I guess I have to join in on the argan oil craze then.

I add an egg to my henna. I think it boosts the red color. Not sure. But afterwards I deep condition with EVCO and Silicon Mix to restore the moisture levels.

Fhrizzball: Yeah, I tried argan oil and didn't like it but I got this at a meet-up and my hair really likes it. My hair is such a diva. Doesn't like shea butter but if shea butter is in some sort of a conditioner or styler, it loves it... even if it's the number one ingredient. But heaven forbid I use the plain stuff on my head. Guess it feels the same way about argan oil. Smh.

I can use all the help to boost red color. I tried using cayenne once for that effect and a bit got in my eye once...never again. I guess I'll stick to using the egg then.

Shea butter does nothing for my head plain either. However some of the sheamoisture products that have shea practically the first ingredient and my strands are singing praises.

Thanks girl. And yeah, my hair is not a huge fan of plain oils unless I'm just using it to take down a braid- or twist-out. It does, however, LOOOOOVE plain avocado butter and mango butter if I whip it with avocado butter, but plain shea and cocoa and all that other jazz? Not so much.

davisbr88 how long did you leave it on? If you leave it on over 10 mins, your hair is gonna feel horrible. I have been doing this treatment since i was 9 and you can't leave it on long. You have to always follow up with a moisturzing DC.

Oops... Lol.
And I thought I was keeping it short only leaving it in for 2 hours. Thank God I decided to instead of leaving it on overnight like I usually do with my DCs. I woulda had to do a second BC if I would have done that!

You just have protein overload. I have protein overload too not to long ago and it took my 4 DC's to get my hair right.

Add much moisture and you will be back to normal!

Thanks so much, ladies!
My hair is back to normal now, so I guess it wasn't too, too overloaded.
It felt almost normal after the cholesterol, and then I did another DC yesterday with honey, olive oil, and some DC I had around here and it's fine today.

@Fhrizzball I'm cringing just thinking about cayenne pepper in my eye. I've henna'd awhile but never go the red color that is a side effect of the henna. Well, it was tinted red. I wanted noticeable red. So one day I threw an egg in there and bam! I love it and get complimented on it all the time.
