straight roots with braid outs

how to reduce straight roots w/ braidouts? i dont like the way cornrow out looks because my hair is layered and i get an uneven waves.

Maybe spritz them with some water after you take out the braids? It should make them shrink up a little bit thus making curls?

Curly Nikki suggests doing a flat twist beginning and then going free form down the rest, I tried that and it worked pretty well.

i think that would just leave me with puffy roots. i would like the braid out texture to be as close as possible to the scalp without having wonky ends.
