Wow..Why all the bad reviews about Phyto Relaxer?

yes please report back to this thread. That is an order lol. Im just trying to understand the dryness that occurs a couple weeks after the relaxer. It seems some people keep saying the same thing. Why does this happen?? why does dryness just pop up outta the blue for all these people?

I think that dryness that occurs is due to not getting the relaxer out entirely. You've really got to wash it out. It clings in there for some reason. You'll have to was anywhere from 3-7 times to ensure that all the relaxer is out and neutralized.

Then you won't have moisture problems.

i recently switched from phytorelaxer index 2 to the new creme of nature - no lye with organic oils. I noticed extreme moisture as soon as the product was washed out of my hair. After conditioning, my hair usually feels dry with phyto until i load a buch of stuff on it, but with the CON relaxer... my hair was soft and silky after rinsing out the leave-in conditioner that comes with the box. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE!

I used Phyto II for the first time last touch up. I sooooo wanted this to be my new relaxer for life but, honestly, I will never use it again. I did experience the "hard to wash out" feeling. Plus it also felt like the product straightened the hair too quickly which gave me the sense that I over processed. Soon after the application.....breakage. I reacted quickly with lots of ceramides, protein, moisture and love and was able to stop the breakage in a short amount of time.

Long story short, I'm right headed back to Affirm Fiberguard.

I had no idea there were negative reviews. I use Phyto I exclusively. I started using it years ago, then stopped due to the price. I went back to it after joining LHCF and I will not use another relaxer.

I have fine-medium coarse hair so Phyto I gets my hair straight. It leaves my hair soft with lots of body. I've never experienced dryness and I don't have any type of unique conditioning routine.

Affirm and Mizani are like fire on my scalp. Phyto never burns, not even a little bit.

I've used Phyto II for a few years with no problems. My hair is 4a and thick, but I used (pre-LHCF days) to heat style and relax a lot, so my hair was damaged, and still no problems after I relaxed. Phyto II gave me great body, lots of shine and straight hair!

It never caused dryness, and even though I was silly and didn't base my scalp, it never burned. No dryness -- this from a chick who (formerly) never moisturized but for shampoo and water!

By contrast, this time (last week, in fact) I relaxed with Dr. Miracles (didn't read the bad reviews here first), and my hair looks completely unrelaxed.

Another example of how much it truly depends on your hair.

Bump - I have a salon consult tomorrow with a stylist that uses Phyto. Should I be concerned about the drying impacts of Phyto? Is there a difference between salon grade Phyto and other Phyto prods? All that I'm reading has me a little nervous. I'm previously relaxed with a low-lye formula of Design Essentials Sensitive Scalp relaxer.

No Phyto is the same in the salon or if you buy it at Sephora.

I don't think you should be concerned with dryness. If you already have a ceramide/moisture regimen you will be fine.

DE is a good product, but Phyto does leave more body to the hair IMO than DE.

I like Phyto and I use this relaxer exclusively, but I think you should stick with what's already working for you.

As far as dryness....my hair is prone to dryness with any relaxer. I can't use lye because my scalp can't take it.

The salon also uses Affirm and Design but product pushes Phyto as she feels it's the best relaxer for my hair type. I'm nervous with all the reviews. My appt isn't until Mar for the actual TU so I have time to decide.

poochie -- what Solitude said....:yep:

*I have witnessed this poor relaxer catching it on this board since 2004 *

*wipes away invisibile crying Indian tear*

I'm back with questions because I'm due for a TU next week and will likely be TUd with Phyto 1 or 2...whichever the stylist feels is best for my hair.

1. How do you determine whether to use Phyto 1 or 2?
2. Why are ceramides necessary?
3. Why does the dryness occur?
4. Any other things I should consider before taking the Phyto plunge?

1. How do you determine whether to use Phyto 1 or 2?
In the past I used Index II because my hair was on the thicker side. I read previous reviews that Index I wasn't for my hair texture.

2. Why are ceramides necessary?
I'm new to ceramides so I'm not sure why it's required. The ceramides has helped my hair for the couple of weeks that I used it prior to relaxing with Phyto Index II again.

3. Why does the dryness occur?
I can't answer answer about the dryness but I'm experiencing a little bit of it. I got my TU on the 9th @ 16 weeks post and my hair had so much body and looked great.

I washed on Monday the 14th with Giovanni Smoothing Shampoo, Ahogee 2 min and Silicon Mix Mixed w/ Biolage Hydratherapie. My hair is strong and thick but it feels like It could stray toward the drier side. It could be the addition of protein or the underprocessed hair or both. It could also be me not using the Chelating Shampoo that was recommended to use.

I also have a section that is a bit underprocessed but that may be my fault because I protected my previously relaxed hair with oil and Protecto and I added oil to my relaxer. I might have gone overboard on protecting the relaxed hair.

4. Any other things I should consider before taking the Phyto plunge?

I plan on washing with a Chelating Shampoo. I'll be pushing moisture and ceramides this go around. I'll keep you posted on how it turns out. :yep:

thanks everyone for your input.

ugggg...this is so hard. This product gets so many mixed reviews. If it was a conditioner....ok so what. My hair can get back on track after a wash or two. But this is a relaxer. this can truly mess up my progress.

My stylist is fantastic. I've been using lye for 15+ years. i have no complaints...except for the fact i'm tired of using these harsh chemicals. and i don't want to go natural/ nor texlaxed. so it's really a hard choice

since you have no issues with your lye relaxer, except the use of "harsh chemicals" may i suggest trying a milder lye relaxer. Design Essentials has a LOW LYE relaxer with shea butter that is FANTASTIC...or Mizani Butter Blend which is also a lower lye formula with moisturizers built in.

both have great reviews.....i personally use Design Essentials and i love it.

my last comment to you is something my old auntie told me when i was in college and i wanted to try a new brand of relaxer. she was my first hair stylist and a professional cosmetologist.

"if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

i shouldve listened to her because at the time my hair was thriving and i tried the new relaxer anyway, because why should i listen to her? :drunk:

that attempt to change brands and type of relaxer caused my first setback. since then, i can honestly say that any time i have had a hair setback it has been because i didn't keep doing what works...i jump off into some new idea that inevitably costs me some hair.:nono:

good luck whatever you decide:grin:
