Hey ladies, I’m in need of some advice on my HHJ. I have only two questions:

1.) How much breakage is too much?
2.) Are the wispy 2-3inch hairs also breakage??

My story: Yesterday, during my wash routine I counted 9 small pieces of broken hairs. In addition, I noticed a lot of wispy small pieces of hair that are 2-3 inches in length and that appear to be smaller in diameter than my regular shed hair (they are definitely lighter in color and don’t look as thick as the others). Most of the small little 9 pieces broke off when I detangled with my shower comb (about 6 of them). I have 4 a/b natural hair that I usually wash every 7-10 days. On wash days, I detangle, wash and condition. On those days I usually either deep condition or do a pre-poo treatment. I only wear my hair in 2strand twists that I try to moisturize every other day, but sometimes ends up every 2 days. And I wear these twists in a bun. I don’t remember the last time I trimmed my hair. Maybe a year ago. I was trying not to trim my hair and wasn’t sure if I should go ahead and do that.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a bathroom tub where I can remove the stopper, therefore, I try to collect as much of the shed hair as possible so the sink doesn’t get stopped up. So, that’s how I am able to see what’s dropping off my head!

So, is there reason to be concerned with 9 pieces of breakage?? I hardly notice any during the week. If I do it is about 2 max for the week. And, are those small wispy pieces also breakage too? And, if so, what should I do to curb this problem?? I feel like I am following all of the “rules”.

Any ideas will be much appreciated because I get so disheartened when I see these hairs, especially when I work so hard to grow my hair!!

OP have u tried qhemet's amla & olive (if your hair is thick)... or burdock root creme (if thin)... that along with a protein treatment should really get u going

can't help u on the no trimming... i'm obsessed with healthy BLUNT ends

Haven't tried the first two products, but have used Apghogee 2 minute reconstructor. I do that once in a while, but not even sure if it's doing anything for my hair. I don't notice too much of a difference. Not sure what "difference" I should notice when using it either. That's why I don't use it consistently.

Sorry op, not sure if your hair is thick or fine , but I know for myself because I have fine hair a certain level of breakage is inevitable. Maybe you can mitigate against the breakage by detangling your hair while your deep conditioning instead of in the shower. This has helped me.

9 pieces of broken hair is not a big deal IMO when you have 100,000-150,000 hairs on your head...

It's .006%-.009% of the total hair on your head. Some breakage is inevitable, i would be worried if you saw maybe 30+ broken hairs, since you wash your hair like once a week or so.

The wispy hairs are breakage as well. They might be splits that have traveled 2-3 inches up the hair shaft and have broken off.

I would worry about split ends and cut them off ASAP before they travel up more than 1/4th inch and compromise the rest of your hair strand.

IMO people who say they do not get ANY breakage are lying or not looking close enough. I detangle over a white sink so I can see it. If you let it wash down the drain or fall to the carpet etc, of course you are not gonna see it.

Shed hairs have a white "bulb" on the end... so unless that bulb is there.. the hairs you see are breakage regardless of the length of the hairs are seeing.

IMO, since "long hair" is the goal, any amount of breakage is too much for me. (lol)

Yeah, I am worried about the hairs I don't see that do end up in the drain. So, I'm not quite sure of the actual picture! On my next wash day, I will spend time at the sink. I'm thinking I will also give myself a nice trim.

I really try to look for splint ends, but since my hair is so curly it is difficult for me to see.

I may also look for a different leave in. I used the kimmaytube leave in last night, and my hair was dry this morning when I woke up to twist it.
