Manipulation vs. Heat, what's worse?

Anybody else find that their hair can handle heat (within reason) just fine, but it crumbles at the slightest bit of manipulation? I thought I was on track but just noticed that one side of my hair is starting to thin and break because of wrapping my hair. I just switched driections to give the other side a break and now this!

Yes, I think manipulation is far worse for my hair. Especially since I had chronic dryness in my hair (found a moisture routine). heat definitely helps

Hmm, I never really thought about it, but I get way less manipulation breakage when my hair is straightened, vs when its airdried or in a textured style. So I guess manipulation is worse for my fragile hair

Heat helps me to be able to tame my hair without doing much. I say manipulation is worse. Although too much of a "good" thing can lead to a downfall so maybe your hair is suffering from the use of too much heat?

My hair can handle the heat- the manipulation, not so much. When I use my heat, and low manipulation actually works really well for me.

I say manipulation for 200 bob! Lol
My worst enemy, alongside tangles.

Both are bad for me... when I grew to BSL before, the continual heat usage (about 2x per month) eventually caught up to me.

Daily Manipulation. Heat styling is basically manipulating your hair, too. When it's wet and more fragile and being pulled with brushes, fine tooth combs, etc is worse (imo) than the actually heat itself.

Surprised at the answers so far, but then again, not really. Manipulation tends to be worse for my hair as well. I can handle heat usage without a fraction of the breakage and other issues that come with regular manipulation.

I think manipulation is worse. I know quite a few naturals who wear their hair straight majority of the time and they retain so much length. That's because they straighten once every 2-4 weeks and while it's straight, they barely have to comb their hair. I would go this route, but I don't think I look my best with straight hair and it's kind of boring to me. :perplexed

ITA! My hair broke off from too much manipulation. I don't have any problems with heat, as long as I don't abuse it.

What can of things go under manipulation?

When ya'll say you can handle the heat its flat ironing right?

Is blowdrying manipulation?

thanks

Both are crazy for my hair. So, I keep manipulation low; whereas, heat has pretty much been nonexistent.

Heat.

I dont care how delusional other people want to be regarding the effects and repercussions of heat I just know that for my head it is a no go. My hair hates heat, which is why I barely have used it (and dont intend to for quite a while) since going natural. Its not worth the heat damage (I dont care for the newly coined phrase heat training) and the time it would take to grow out the damage. Its just not worth it.:nono:

^^^ Manipulation can be combing your hair, washing your hair, blow drying, flat ironing, wrapping your hair, setting your hair on rollers, etc.

If you have to handle your hair in any way, you are manipulating it :yep:

Just because heat is a "no go" for YOUR hair doesn't mean other people are delusional about the effects it has on their own hair. :smirk:

I have far less problems from manipulation than I do with heat. Heat for me is a gradual issue as my hair lays down easily with the slightest amount of heat. BUT, overuse and misuse of heat has proven to be a huge downfall for me.

To me heat IS manipulation. Your hair strands are being manipulated by heat. In my book, they are the same, both are bad.

Yes it is manipulation, however, I am able to leave my hair alone more after it has been straightened with heat. When I wear my hair in natural hair styles, I manipulate it every single day for twistouts, buns, puffs, etc. With my hair straightened, I only have to use heat once a month.

Both are bad...but you can stop putting your hands in your hair. Once the damage has been done with heat, the damage has been done. You can't "fix" heat damaged hair..all you can really do is let it grow out and chop it off.

I think heat is worse and the damage is usually irreversible. Some kind of cutting/trimming needs to be going on. Even if heat damaged hair ends up "looking" okay that doesn't mean it truly is. You can't see inside your hair cuticle without a microscope. Manipulation seems to do less damage.

They're both bad lol everytime I touch my hair, my hair breaks. I have to touch my hair to use heat. Lose lose situation for me!

Manipulation for my hair is worse than heat (within reason). Everyone hair is different even with the same hair type-some hair doesn't like heat at all and some hairs does well when heat is involved. So there can't be which is worse thread w/o different opinions.

Firstly, why the hostility towards the heat? Just because it works on some heads and not on others why should we be classified as "delusional"?

Secondly, why do either have to be bad? Has anyone stopped to think maybe they are not using the right products and that's why the hair is always snapping and cracking no matter is done? Or maybe you are being too rough when you manipulate.. My hair likes heat but too much of something isn’t always good. i.e. heat or manipulation. I don't necessarily consider heat manipulation. If I am sitting under a bonnet dryer with wet hair that is in a curly fro, how is the heat manipulating it? I think the application and method of heat usages would change the classification.

Additionally, with "manipulation" unless you are locked you will ALWAYS manipulate your hair...it's just as I mentioned how much is too much that should gauged.

Anyway, I think you just need to find what works with your hair. Air drying for me is a no go. It creates tangles galore which leads to manipulation from the pulling. It's not bad, it just doesn't work for me. IMO pulling dry knots is way worse the combing through a few tangles when blow-drying… and again, it’s not like I am drying my whole heat on SUPER high heat either for the heat naysayers….but point is what's good for the goose may not always be good for the gander.

I'm ok with heat and daily manipulation, but the specific manipulation of detangling on wash days, is what I have the most issue with.

Heat. Although both of them are the devil (let me add for "me"), using heat in my hair would be the final straw....
