GAH. I just can't take it. It looks like I have dirty hair. Anytime I use products on my hair they leave little itty bitty white fibers and grayish gunk near my roots/strands that look like dandruff, yet it's not dandruff.

I'm using EVCO, shea butter, sulfur at night, and MT during the day. I wash with HAIR 1 (its like wen) to get the buildup off. It works for my scalp, but my roots want to hold on to these nasty fibers and won't let go.

Even when I use Suave Clarifying, I can get the stuff out, but then when I DC it comes right back! I've tried not applying condish to the roots, I never really apply condish to the roots, but it still happens.

What gives?? My roots look dirty, but I swear I scrub at them 3 or more times a week!

The EVCO, shea butter and sulfur you use at night a mix? Sometimes it can be difficult getting stuff like this out of the hair. You may have to shampoo consistently (with shampoo, not Hair 1 or Wen) to get this mixture out.

How long are you rinsing your hair?

Well my problem is it's been doing this since long before I even starting using the EVCO, sulfur and MT. It does this RIGHT after I clarify and follow up with a conditioner. The products that aren't related to the clarifying shampoo stick in my hair and wont wash out until I clarify again, but even after I clarify I MUST DC, which just puts the gunk into my hair again.

I rinse for a good 5 minutes, stroking my hair to coax all the stuff out. Still nothing.

even if u do go back to washing with every dc dilute ur shampoo with water to cut the harshness of a clarifying shampoo. and try washing in sections. hth

i'm having the same problem. i am going to have to go back to shampooing with every wash.

OP, do you shampoo every time you wash your hair? Maybe you have an excess of build-up on your hair. I shampoo my hair every time I wash it because no/low poo doesn't work for me.

Shea butter definitely will leave a gunk if too much is applied or if it is not thoroughly mixed with additional products

Do you use a water filter? You may have hard water and one would be helpful.

Some people also use baking soda to clarify.

I use bentonite or rhassoul clay to clarify and detoxify. I mix it with either rose water or coffee (you can use plain water, too). And I use a stick or an immersion blender to whip it into a creamy, pudding consistency. Apply it to scalp and hair, massage for a minuate and put a plastic cap on for 30 mins. Rinse out.

Oh, and I have a water filter, too.

I say go back to an SLS containing shampoo or clarifying shampoo. The products you're using may be too heavy for your current shampoo, especially if you layer on product daily

I shampoo with Hair 1 now, use to use other shampoos before but they dry my hair out in a strange way. i tried the Keracare non-sulfate shampoo, and it didn't clean my scalp. The only thing that works is a clarifying, yet I have to DC for my hair health, and the gunk comes back lol.

It seems to not matter if I do or don't shampoo or the product usage. Earlier this year I clarified every week (cowash twice a week, still buildup), and it just didnt seem to matter. Right after I apply the DC it will buildup.

Earlier I used ORS orange pak, and now I use nu expressions humective. I'm not sure if I got the same results using Humecto, but it wasn't moisturizing enough for my hair.

I think I'll try the baking soda in the morning. I know my hair is clean but it just would look weird to the person who doesnt know how often I wash.

diasdoll- Nope, I dont dye or use a rinse

Pompous Blue- I dont have a water filter, but the water doesn't seem to be that harsh here. I may be wrong...

I'm going to be honest if the hair1 is like wen it's pretty much cowashing which is nice for leaving your hair like it's not built up but it may not be removing enough product. Which other shampoos have you used in the past?

The bolded is also a possibility. Before I learned how to shampoo my hair properly, I would notice that I'd have build-up under my fingernails. It was because I wasn't scrubbing my scalp enough....just another thought.

Could it be that your scalp is sensitive to sulfur? When a product called Surge was out, a lot of people could not use it because it caused their scalp to flake. I wonder of it could be an allergic reaction causing this. Sulfur was the main ingredient in the product.

Hair1 does not remove build up. The Suave Clarifying does the trick, but whatever you're DCing with is not rinsing out of your hair well. Some follow a DC with a light poo to get it all out.

If you want less build up, you could possibly apply your mixtures every other day instead of every day.

ETA: I should add that I haven't tried WEN, only HairOne so I can't say how well WEN works. I edited my post.

I used Hair One Jojoba and found it left me a build up. Hair One olive oil for me is much better but rinse it well.

Also I use limited products in my hair. I have gotten heavy sometimes and Hair One did a great job of keeping my hair clean. :) I have used sulfate free shampoo's for over a year and Hair one since January 1, 2010. I will continue to use it, less split ends and healthier hair :)

try washing your hair in 4-6 celie plaits with a no or low sulfate poo.....when i washed my hair loose i felt like i could never get it fully clean in the scalp...the loose braids allow me to get up in it with few tangles. i take the plaits loose put condish on each section and twist in 3-4 sections. i quickly stick my head under the showerhead(i have a filter) to rinse but some product is left in. tried co-washing and stopped because i felt it was too much manipulation and my scalp never felt clean, everythang ain't for everybody.i hope this helps.

HAIR One won't remove buildup. With amodimethicone as the 4th ingredient, it will add to the buildup. Are you using Suave Clarifying Conditioner or the shampoo? If the conditioner, same comment.

What is MT? And what do you use as a DC?

I use to have this problem and shampoo only added to the build-up. I only use witch hazel or apple cider vinegar diluted in water to remove the build up from my scalp. for some odd reason my scalp loves it. Ever since then I have no need to use shampoo anymore ( with the exception of a shakakai bar)

doesnt that hair one stuff have a silicone? you just need a shampoo. if there's a cone that's not a water soluble one use a sulfate shampoo. cause you're doing a lot.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I do like the Hair 1. *sigh* I was hoping I'd find a conditioning clarifying treatment like what they claim to be, but I guess not.

My hair has been acting funny. If I don't DC the roots, even after getting the buildup out, it will mat. I lost a lot of hair over the summer due to a protein problem, and I don't think many parts have fully recovered from it. I found this out from two days ago. I used the Suave Clarifying shampoo and got all the stuff out from what I could tell. I was light handed with leave in on my roots for fear of buildup...and I wound up having those mats again :nono:.

Southerncitygirl- Im one of those people where the plaits don't work. I love the idea, but when I do it either the water undos the braid when I do loose ones, or the water undos the braid up to the ends, leaving them tangled and knotted at the ends and splitting them when I tried to untangle them. It happens every time so I just part my hair and wash in sections instead. I may be doing something wrong. I also worry that cowashing may be too much manipulation, but I guess I want to see if all the moisture will make my hair grow in differently (since it gets dry easily), and also to get the sulfur smell out (I got called out on it once lol)

suburbanbushbabe- I've been using Humective for conditioning since September, and before that I would switch between ORS and Humecto.

thedonrosscollection- does the witch hazel elave your hair dry?

empressi- do you use conditioners without cones? What would you recommend?
