BASES - Any ladies make their own mixes from stock bases ?

I don't think "passing off as originals" is the right wording. The manufacturer who made your car or your tv did not make all of the parts in house from raw materials this doesn't mean that toyota or sony, etc., can't claim original design. They purchased components from other companies and put them together to create the end product. If you use premade spaghetti sauce to make a meal you still did the cooking and you need some know how to take your meal from blah to tasty. You can get bases from websites like makingcosmetics.com or fromnaturewithlove.com or ebay and play around with them. They're not wonderful when you get them - you'll probably have to tweak them to get them to work for you and if you get good at it maybe you can develop your own hair line. I was into this stuff several years ago but I've developed other interests so I'm okay with outsourcing that aspect of my life - let the companies with the full time chemists do it and if I like what they come up with I'll buy it. :)

so during the time when u were tinkering around with mixing u didnt come up with a mix that was good enough to keep?

I was going to order from Essential Wholesale, but I'm waiting for my samples from Curl Junkie to come in so if I like those I will use my monthly "haul" on CJ stuff...

But, I will say that I'm definitely going to get some. I'm more comfortable tweaking a base to add ingredients I know my hair likes (like honey) rather than adding it to a "finished" product where I risk messing it up.

^^^^^
exactly, I mean I pretty much add a ceramide oil, humectant and or SAA to all my prods. So if I can get a decent base and add my fave EOs and ingredients that my hair loves then I'll be much better off

I haven't but i will start. I am going to get a conditioner base and an sls free shampoo base. I know what my hair needs and likes so it should not be too hard. I use up a lot of conditioner and this would be a cheaper alternative. Everything else i will either buy on the ground or from a trusted e-vendor. I will post a blog when i get the stuff, mix it and test it on my hair for a period of time, then share it with anyone who would like to try to make it themselves.

Leesh I usually add Wheat Germ Oil to DCs both moisture and protein and Ive just started adding sunflower oil too.(not together though)

Thank You So Much! How has it been working for you?

Let me tag you, its gotten a lil confusing searching for quotes now! SimJam

hehe. Its been awesome. Ceramides and Scurl have made being natural a breeze.

I use hemp seed to seal, Its so awesome I only want to use it straight and not mix it into anything.
I spent the last month getting my KISS haircare reggie down which did not include visiting my stylist. But today I felt like getting a nice style so I went to her and she commented on how soft my hair was.

BTW .... Im bleary eyed from looking at websites and comparing staple products and making lists of what I want to buy

I would love too and in the future but I would research about it before attempt anything... and unfortunately I really wouldn't have the time for that now. I always wanted to make my own stuff just for hobby sake ... just never knew bases existed.. I only knew about websites like soapgoods.com and looking at the website it became overwhelming.

I notice the only big difference between bee mine avocado conditioner and essential wholesale's citrus conditioner base is avocado butter and avocado oil.. That is good to know because that means essential wholefood conditioner base must be a real good base.

So it's not so easy to "make" everything after all. There is still a lot of "work" involved." Thanks a lot for this thread.

exactly, or atleast a decent starter.
and as la colocha said ... for anyone who cowashes regularly this may be a good sub.

I dont think anyone is disputing that some sort of trial and error may be required.

What I am seeing is that many products being offered for sale by small companies have not been altered significantly from an orginal base.

Its not gonna kill me to spend $20 on experimenting LOL

DDTexlaxed what do you consider a lot of work? From the recipes I have read, I don't think adding to bases is a lot of work.

Agreed! It all depends on how "complicated" one wants to make their conditioners. Typically, we're talking about adding additives (panthenol, silk amino acids), fragrances, or oils. Those who indulge in ayurvedic herbs might want to add those as well. As someone mentioned upthread, simply test your concoction in small batches until you find a winner. Yes, it takes times. Yes, it takes experimentation. It's not for everyone, but there are many who like the idea of being able to create a personalized conditioner, particularly for co-washing.

I'll be buying some bases in the near future. I already whip my own butters, so moving to conditioners etc is just the next logical step for me. Adding to bases (that are already preserved) shouldn't be that difficult. I think it will be fun!

So did the orig thread go poof?!
I am thinking about playing around. I am so used to my cheapy conditioners though. If there were some good butter bases, I'd be totally game.

I've been doing my own moisturizer mixes, and mixing butters, oils, etc. But I think I will probably get a conditioner base - other than the Trader Joe's Nourish Spa, I am not crazy about most conditioners I have tried, and I go through so much that I have been wanting to buy in bulk. I'll probably do the same for shampoo, though I use much less of that. I just hate that products I like disappear from the shelves or get reformulated, so making my own conditioner will solve that problem.

Haven't checked to see if it went poof, but its still on the naturallycurly website under the 4a section

I dont think so. I think the link just doesn't work because it has "forum 6" in the url and the newer threads don't. Something technical that Nikos is doing because alot of the links I've saved no longer work because it has the "forum 6" in the url.

After the conditioner base exposure, I have spent the entire weekend researching ingredients of stuff I wanna try and I finally found the base for Hairveda condish so I will be bootlegging me some of their condish..I can't wait to play around with the ingredients this will also help me when I move overseas next year, because if I can perfect some products I can save sooo much money and not worry about ordering and waiting forever to receive the stuff. I'm glad this came out. :-)

Yup Angell- give up the goods.

Also, can anyone tell me how to add fragrance? I am a sucker for products that smell good. I love mixing things, so this is right up my alley. 2011 just may see me using my own handcrafted products.
