When I do twists they are so spacey! It looks like I have alot of hair when it's in it's fro state. But when I do twists they are anorexic and spaced out. I would have loved to have this as a protective style, but it just does not look right. What styles do you ladies do? I'm so tired of puffs, I guess I'm just gonna have to go back to my wigs. My hair is too short to go in a bun. I'm neck length.

Bumping for you. I'm in the same boat. I'd NEVER wear my twists out in public - they are so pathetic. Lol. I wear my hair mostly in braid-outs now. Makes it look pretty full.

The last time I was fully natural, I came across this issue. Parting smaller sections for my twist solved it for me (though it takes longer), but other than that, I would suggest wearing them back with a headband until you are ready to do the twist-out. Or cornrowing or flat twisting the front and 2 strand twisting the back...Good luck.

Edit: When my hair was shorter, I did the one strand twists, too. Parting smaller sections was the key, though.

I cornrowed the front of my hair the other day and twisted the back. It looked so pathetic! But I did part them kind of big. I guess I'll try again this weekend, but do them smaller.

I part smaller using my fingers, that helps. When I'm not feeling that I do braidouts, cornrows half way and put the back in bantu knots. You could also always do small individual braids those may hold up a while with your own hair or extensions. Also try an all natural volumizing shampoo. They work pretty well making it look and feel thicker

I had to use smaller section and twists slightly loose to allow for swelling and volume...also I lightly spritz the twists to allow them to expand and appear thicker.

While transitioning, I realized i have this problem. I had find hair as a child and have NEVER had thick fat juicy braids, twists, pony's or anything.

Hopefully a solution will come through here.

Is that a twistout in your avatar? Pretty! Thanks for the tips. As for braiding the front and doing the bck in bantu knots, do you take the bantu knots out? Or are you keeping them in? silenttullip

You know, I was thinking about wetting them too! Thanks for this tip!

Only the back of my head is fine, from the crown on down it is soft and wispy. My braids and twists in the back end up looking pathetic.

Uhhhm I just go about my business with my pathetic skimpy spacey twists :) Generally my twists are in a pony or some type of up do until i'm ready for a twist out.

@pookaloo83, I know just what you mean about sparse twists. That's the story of my life.

What I have found to sort of help hide that fact is
  • Do them very small so they are many;
  • Stagger them so that the twists on each row are lined up with the part between the twists in the previous row;
  • Do not use a comb to part but just finger part. Somehow this helps not magnify the spaces. Also you don't end up with permanent parts this way as can happen if you wear twists all the time;
  • Twist on dry hair then dunk the twists in water (like CW as soon as you're done). This helps them fatten up a bit and also letting them drip dry allows them to dry straight which I find neater than wobbly twists;

  • Put them up in styles that sort of take the attention from how thin they look. Pulling back with a phony puff or putting them up sort helps. Some ideas:

    If you braid the twists, you can have a braid-out on twists:

    Cornrow the middle, or you can do two cornrows and leave some out:

    Use a phony puff:

Wetting your twists does make them puff up and look fuller. This is a photo of the twists you just saw in the first pic after subsequent washes:

BTW, this last pic and the first one were both done finger parting. The pic with the phony puff was parted with a comb. Notice how far apart the twists seem in the comb-parted do compared with the finger-parted one.

I can't take credit for this suggestion...but for your twists outs Nichis says to do flat twists, I agree, your twistouts won't look as spacey.

She also says

it helps because 1) its a faster method, 2) she doesnt have to have the same parts that would make them spacey

I tend to do braid outs (cornrows, not individual braid) instead, b/c I never did master the art of making my twists look good and I hate the time it takes to do the small twists, BUT...I never did the whole loose twists and wetting after done to make the them look less spacey. Maybe I'll give it one last ditch effort.

I agree with Nonie. I do twists on dry hair, use small parts, part with my fingers, and wet them when I'm finished. I had my twists done at a braiding salon once and she used big parts and the twists were so tight that it made it look like I had no hair. I do my twists loose mainly because I don't know how to do them tight and they come out great every time.

Nonie you are a life saver! And you're also my hair twin! :lol: I'm gonna do some twists tonight, then I'm gonna wet them and do a braid out on them like Nonie did. I just hope it doesn't take me all night!

my hair looked like that when i first went natural. here i am a year and a half natural and my hair has thickened up so much that it takes hours for it to dry. and my spaces are not huge anymore.

i discovered a long time ago to do flat twists for twistouts because they do, in fact, look more defined and come out better. if i want two-strand twists, i gotta make 'em real big and chunky.

Alright, so I did some twists last night. I tried to follow Ms. Nonie's tips as best as I could. I twisted on dry hair and this morning I dowsed them with water to plump them up. I have to admit this is the most pleased I have been with my twists. I still need to work on my parting, b/c the sizes of my twists vary, with some winding up rather small.

But here are a few pics (cause I know that is what you all want). I open to any suggestions. Some are with flash and some are without. The ones without the flash are more true to how my hair looks but it is more difficult to see the twists. The ones with the flash are extra blingy, and my hair just does not look like that. Ah well. Oh well, between the two sets you can get idea. Like I said, not perfect, but much better results that I have previosly been able to obtain. I will def rock it for the remainder of the week.

kandiekj100, I would never have guessed you had fine hair. Looks very nice! :up:

Thanks I was hoping you'd pop back in. Finally, I can put this style in my arsenol. The only thing is that my front still looks pathetic, hence the head band. Next time I may try to flat twist the front, so that I don't need it. Thanks for the tips! I hope other fine curlies find they are able to implement them as well.

kandiekj100, yes that could work (I do cornrows coz I can't flat twist) or you can create a bang that starts from way back around the crown, instead of using just the hairs long the perimeter. :giggle: That's what I do. After all, it seems that's what everyone does. :p

This is exactly the suggestion that I was going to make. I wouldn't give up on twists all together, with a little tweaking you can get them to be pretty big.

ETA: Oh and OP I want to see pics if you try and like the new methods.TIA.
@Nonie you just crack yourself up don't ya..lol. You're silly..but it's true. (for the most part)
