Great thread! Here are mine:

DC on dry hair - I thought this was just way over the top. However, I kept seeing so many ladies doing it that I decided to try it. Wowza what a difference! I only do it with my protein dc though.

Product junkie - enough is never enough! If it's one of my staple products and it's on sale, it's mine!

I know there are more, but I can't think of them right now.

Strangely enough, I refused to DC for the longest. I would only cowash my hair, but I would NOT DC. I just knew I could get to BSL without it. Weeeeellll, two years later here I am still grazing APL, and for the past six months, I've been DCing weekly. I WILL pass APL some day!

Bunning. I hated wearing my hair up. But now I realize that I have to keep my hair off my shoulders more often.

1. Pre-shampoo treatments: I used to think; "Whats the point? Its just gonna be washed out anyway..." It doesn't get washed away if it penetrates the hair shaft, like protein and some oils. It also acts as a buffer if you use sulfate shampoos.

2. DCing 2x a week: I didn't think I'd have the patience to do this. It has made a huge difference in my hair.

3. Wigs as a PS: This never occurred to me pre-LHCF, but then after reading all those success stories I was sold.

4. Low-manipulation reggies: I was never a fan of using a brush along the length of my hair. However I thought that only combing 1x-2x a week was just unnecessary. But, after seeing how people can get their hair to look neat with just finger combing and the retention...I'm giving it a shot.

I think after reading all the posts in this thread it's encouraging me to get the nerve to adopt other hair care practices. It's nice to see that I'm not the only one thinking stuff was too much trouble. Someone mentioned pre-poo and explained that a little better and it's making me think it might be worth it now. I thought it was a waste but I guess it makes sense.

I've done alot of stuff since I started my hair journey 2 years and a bit ago........

1) Moisturise and Seal daily! I was so lazy before I would not even know what to do! :perplexedOnce I started and my hair thrived, I stuck by it.

2) Co-wash and frequently. To the extent that I've not used shampoo in at least 9 months!:nono:

3) Deep condition my hair regularly. I do these on dry hair and then co-wash and steam. I do it first with protein DCs and finish with moisture, moisture, moisture!:lick:

4) Buy a steamer. Can you believe how much better than my heated cap that is? I'm tired but I'm going to sit under it in a few minutes!

5) Become a Product Junkie and an Ingredient reader! :drunk:I actually try to reduce my stash by reading up on the ingredients.....and that has moved across to my food and eating habits! I also take alot of multivitamins and minerals now! Spirulina is GREAT!
6) Decide to go natural! :wow: Ok, this was a biggie. I didn't like the natural police, but I found as my hair got healthier, it got thicker, and I liked it. I started texlaxing.....even thicker hair. Then my hair started being mistaken for natural EVERYWHERE and it was in a positive light!
PLUS, I wanted even thicker hair. For me, I guess that was how I always saw "healthy hair" in my head.....

:wow: We do grow up (and hopefully, my hair will grow down) :lachen: :lachen: :lachen: :lachen:

Co-washing At first I didn't really see the point. It seemed weird to me and a little gross to NOT use shampoo. But Now I love co-washing it has made such a difference in the softness and moisture level in my hair.

Wear wigs I was never a weave person. Even though my hair was a dry NL with raggety ends, I still was never tempted by fake hair. Now in my hair journey wigs are soo helpful. It takes no time to do my hair when going out (just the time to blend my leave-out hair with the wig). My hair also always looks good with little effort. The thought of wearing a wig creeped me out and I thought that was just for old ladies with NO hair...boy was I wrong...I love halfwigs lol i could go on forever. I also bought a phony pony today. I'll try that out in a week or so when i take out my cornrows. Did I mention how much I love halfwigs??

Reading/understanding labels and what products do what for the hair (ie proteins), detangling properly, pre-poos,transitioning, using heat protectants, becoming obsessed with LHCF (I feel like a junkie), using natural/organic stuff in my hair & all the above

I never thought I would do an acv rinse! And I never thought I would use sulfates again! I had been clarifying with Kinky Curly Come Clean or bentonite clay and hadn't touched a poo with sulfates in 7 months! But the past few weeks my hair felt weird and dull, I pulled out the sulfates and acv and distilled water and bam!!! My hair was sooo soft and shiny and it even looked darker! So I may start doing this every 4-6 weeks!

Same here. I was so caught up into NO Sulfates that I forgot how important it is to clarify once in awhile. My hair has been feeling rough and dry for the last 3 weeks, then it hit me. I need to clarify. Worked like a charm.

I never thought I would be sooo interested in hair. I just wanted a quick FYI on how to help my hair grow and retain the length.

When I first saw the forums online.. I was like "wow-- It just can't be that serious".. 2 years later I am still hardcore in the game :look:.

And the whole PJ thing.. I am a recovering PJ.. iNever thought I would be one of THOSE people

Baggying and wigs. Coulda never told me I would have worn them over my formerly beloved sew ins.

As of today I think I've decided to give MN a go lmao.
I used to only use oil on my hair, but now I actually use a moisturizer and seal with oil.
Another thing is I never believed in tying up my hair at night. Since my hair has been extra dry, I've been doing the silk bonnet.

I never thought that I would be doing the DC'ing with WGO etc. :look: I was thinking..eh the moisturizing condish and SLS free poos were enough. Next thing I know I'm seeing more condishs for co-washing than poos and my hair is loving my WGO pre-poo and WGO + cholesterol DC! :yay:

I also never thought that I would be applying moisturizing butters on at night because my hair is fine and post wash products tend to weigh my hair down....but I am. :yep:
Also since my hair is just past my shoulders, my shirt collars are scaring me :jaws:

PSing is something that I didn't think I would do because I haven't had hair this long in 20 yrs and I wanna "whip my hair back and forth" :rocker: but I'm trying to get to APL for now so PSing I will be doing.

I still haven't tried an ACV rinse but I tried porosity control. So this is one of my last resorts too. Hmmmm..... distilled water?? I'd like to try it but it seems like I would have to use so much of it to make sure my hair is rinsed well. I have an itchy scalp as it is.
Get a Sprite shower filter (anywhere from $12 up to $35 at Lowes). I bought the shower handle for $30 back in January....best decision of my life. I made my SO get the showerhead ($20) and now he is in love too.
I hated sealing and protective styling. Now I do both religiously.
This is exactly what I was about to post. I made it to APL without sealing and only occasionally PSing with braids, but once I added in sealing (I typically use castor oil, EVOO, or both mixed together) and bunning I started retaining like crazy.

Dont know if i replied to this, but I am cowashing up to three times a week and using oils in my hair while wet and going out with my hair in a bun, not to mention being wet all day..... however this has been great, and fun!!! Also, makes me feel stress free lol!!! I think hair is my stress reliever... except the money I spend on it!

For me I never thought I would chop off my textlax hair until Dec 2011, but I did last month and am completely natural now. But I must admit I do feel good about it and am loving loving loving my true natural hair! Will post pics in Dec this yr! I promise!!!!

I didn't think I would try Kimmay's Leave-In. It seemed completely unnecessary and I thought aloe vera was too expensive to be putting on my hair. But after I saw her latest growth update, I was like "What the--?!!" :notworthy: and had to try whatever the hell she was doing. It worked!

But I know for a FACT that I won't try MTG, Monistat, Biotin, or any of those other growth aids. I'm all about retention, but trying to accelerate growth seems a bit much to me. If I find out growth is the problem, then I'll just accept my length or gets some dreads and call it a day. That's just too much extra stress for my life.

:look: be excited about growing some hair :lachen: I am odd ball out. I have buzz cut my hair as you all know quite a few times.

Putting MTG in my hair. I still have half a bottle left that I plan to use up in a couple of months.

Never thought i would wear wigs
Never thought i would use MN
Never thought i would stop wearing sew-ins
Never thought i would consider going natural
Never thought that it would even be possible for me to grow hair beyond shoulder lenght

i never thought i would use henna. because of the color and because im nature and i didnt want my curls to loosen.
but now i love henna.

I never thought I would buy expensive behind combs! I just ordered two bone combs and I feel crazy!!!!!!! Oh and try henna. I normally like to keep my hair game uber simple, but I thought, I have to at least try henna...

Never thought I'd ban mineral oil products. So many of my staples contain them and had been working well for me up until recently - Motions Silk Protein and Motions Moisture Plus (DCs), HS14 (leave-in) for example. I was like, what's the big deal about mineral oil? Then the cool weather hit and that, along with visits to Cancun with its hard tap water, dried my hair out like straw no matter how often I moisturized during the day. I've replaced my staples with non-mineral oil stuff like AOHSR (DC) and YTCucumbers (leave in) and my hair is thanking me.

I also thought I'd never use oils again, now I seal religiously with jojoba. For a time it seemed my hair loved cone-based polishers. Dry, limp hair ended that affair LOL. Over time mineral oil and cones seemed to take their toll, and I'm glad I won't have to clarify as much since I dye and want to protect my color.

Wearing my natural hair straight
Seal my ends (who knew this was any such thing?!?!) ;)
Protective style
Bun
Not cut my hair just because of something insignificant
Wear French braids out in public (I used to cry if my mother would style my hair that way as a kid)

pay $10-20 for hair products! read hair product labels more religiously than i read food labels - a shame, i know! put the flat iron away and replaced it with my new best friend - caruso steam curlers. thanks, lhcf!

Of course a lot of what has already been said.
Wash and relax my own hair. I used to be addicted to the salon.
Try growth aids. I have a bottle of MT and MTG. I also have been taking MSM and a B-Complex.
Pay to be a part of a forum to talk about hair. (:spinning:Don't look at me crazy, we all did it!)
