Deep Thinker
During your HHJ have you seen LHCF women use hair care practices and said something like "that's too extreme" or "that's too much work" or "that's not necessary", etc??

You figure.... MEH.... I'll get there without doing that. But then you end up thinking hmmmmm... my progress isn't so great :nono: so maybe I should give it a try?

For example, I moisturize my hair daily and at first I was just rubbing the moisturizer in my hands and rubbing it through my whole head. My stubborn behind thought, there's no need to actually section off the hair like that. What a waste of time, the moisturizer will make its way there. Then I thought, maybe those few broken hairs I see are the ones that didn't get the moisture?? :nono: So I started sectioning it off and woweee, my hair appreciates it. :yep:

I was also stubborn about sealing afterwards. I said, MEH....that's too much trouble, the moisturizer is on there, where's it going to go? Thinking, my hair should be satisfied because it's much better than I did pre-LHCF when I didn't moisturize at all so that's good enough.

Another one I was also stubborn about was the steamer. I thought, what difference would it make from my heating cap? But once again, woweee, what a difference!!

So now I feel like I'm turning hard-core!! It's taken me 1.5 yrs but I feel like I really know my hair now. :yay:

Anybody care to share any other practices you held off as a last resort?? My very last resort if I stop progressing is rollersetting with no heat. :perplexed At SL it's not the prettiest sight for me.

For me it was protective styling. When I first cut my hair, I was like "Man, when I reach SL I'm gonna wear my hair out everyday. Surely I can get to BSL without protective styling. I just need to make sure that my ends are well moisturized."

Man....as soon as I hit SL, I freaked out. I envisioned my ends breaking off and me being forever stuck at SL. I started protective styling like a maniac and haven't stopped since. I may ease up as soon as I hit full APL but I don't know yet....

I feel you on that one too!! Right now I'm thinking if I had BSL hair I wouldn't even have to do anything to it but let it fall where it may. I know that's not true since whenever I wear it out now I end up pinning it up afer a few hours because I'm so paranoid if I feel it rub on my clothes and that's just at SL!!

I never thought that a HHJ would make me such a product junkie. Then seeing the results of people you just keep is simple (KISS). So now after 7 storage bins of products in 2 yrs and 1 moving box of skala and another of Sunsilk -- I am using Nexxus products only for this month, oils and kimmaytube leave in along with steaming to see some results.

I never thought I would do an acv rinse! And I never thought I would use sulfates again! I had been clarifying with Kinky Curly Come Clean or bentonite clay and hadn't touched a poo with sulfates in 7 months! But the past few weeks my hair felt weird and dull, I pulled out the sulfates and acv and distilled water and bam!!! My hair was sooo soft and shiny and it even looked darker! So I may start doing this every 4-6 weeks!

For the life of me I couldn't understand how anyone could do their hair without combing it. I was sooo reluctant to try this. (especially since I have c-napp hair and it's fine with medium density.) How do you detangle? How do you twist or braid your hair? How do you style it after you remove the twists/braids? How do you work in the conditioners, oils, leave-ins without a comb. I kept SMH when I would read posts by others that they only comb their hair once a month or never.

So, Labor Day weekend I took the plunge! From start to finish I never picked up a comb!
I pre-pooed (massaged Pimento oil into my scalp and applied Jehan pre-shampoo oil to my hair)
Shampooed
oil rinsed
applied conditioner
tea rinsed
applied Mixed Greens to my scalp and massaged it in.
Applied a leave-in conditioner
Applied a hair butter/gel and twisted my hair.

To style it, I did a twist-out and used my fingers to arrange it and was done. NO COMB USED!

My bone combs will only get used now when I do a henna treatment. (twice a month)

I'm in a happy place right now and doing my hair is sooo easy! It's only 3" or 4" and is so easy to do. I know one day I'll have to use a comb, but that won't be until it gets longer.

I still battle back and forth with protective styling. Getting to SL was easy and APL wasn't much harder, but BSB was a beast :wallbash: . I'm guessing that the BSB to WL hump is not going to be pretty :perplexed, so I'm thinking about bunning consistently. I've been on my HHJ for almost 3 years and I have yet to protective style on a regular or even semi-regular basis, only because I see ladies get to longer lengths without doing them. I see it as an extra gold star :notworthy. Dang it! I'm still on the fence about it :wallbash:.

What I finally picked up is washing/cowashing my hair in sections (I do 2). I just started doing this last week :lachen:, and I realized that there is a perk to it. I use less condish that way!!

I can relate. I think I paid Sally's rent the first couple of months I started. Now I'm back to my simple staples and I'm not budging...... as long as they don't get discontinued of course.
Recently Bought MN:blush:

*tiptoes outta thread*:look:

LOL.... I had my MN for probably 6 months before I decided to get the nerve to use it in my hair. And then another 6 months to tell a non-LHCF person about it.

I still haven't tried an ACV rinse but I tried porosity control. So this is one of my last resorts too. Hmmmm..... distilled water?? I'd like to try it but it seems like I would have to use so much of it to make sure my hair is rinsed well. I have an itchy scalp as it is.

Yeah, who would ever think you didn't need a comb??? I just threw away all my regular combs and I only kept the wide-toothed ones and I barely use those. I do use my boar bristle brush to smoothe my hair down for a bun though. But that's only after I finger-combed it.

Congrats on getting to BSB without much protective styling. I was thinking that APL to BSL and WL would be a breeze since it's easier to do protective styles. So I guess you might have to bite the bullet and bun for a few months. I don't have enough hair for my own bun yet so I have to use tracks. But once I get enough hair I think I'd love to bun more often.

Girl, I've had it since about June.:sekret:

I keep saying Imma wait until this Fall/Winter and then try it out!:look:

Stay Tuned.....:eye:

I'm thinking about using that Megatek Rebuilder or that MTG... I dunno I've always been reluctant about horse product on my own hair... lol.

I never thought that I would put my hair in Locs! My first set of locs had my so spoiled that I never had to do really anything to my hair. Now I am on my second set and I love it! Not having to do your hair. Getting out of bed with your hair ready to go is the BEST!

Wow, is that all your locs in your siggie?? Beautiful!! Just Beautiful!!! A woman at my job has locs about that long and I think it took her 10-15 yrs to grow them that long.

I know, right!! But I was tempted to try MTG but it was too confusing trying to figure out the one everyone uses. The one I think everyone uses is something you rinse out. I don't want to have to rinse it out. I just wanted something to apply to my scalp. That was the only reason I tried MN instead.

Chop off my BSL relaxed hair to go natural. I  myself, my family and my friends:lol:.
Congrats on your BC. That's a BIG chop too LOL. It's like taking one step back to go many more forward. I'm sure your hair is in a much healthier state natural. I tried it once but it didn't last long but now I can't get the nerve up again. That was right before joining LHCF. Your family will be even more shocked when they see your growth a year later.

Getting braids and kinky twists! I just thought that was so beneath my style La Flair! But, I've come up with different styles that work for my personality and things are certainly coming along. Now I see that there is nothing I won't do for my hair and its growth. Before, I wasn't doing enough and it showed!!

PS every day. I used to never wear my hair up because I felt uncomfortable doing so. Now, I love wet bunning.

Only comb when detangling with conditioner on wash days.

And... wash my hair in sections. It may take longer but it comes out better for me.

Like some of the other ladies, I never thought I'd be one to wear 2 strand twists in my short hair. Its convenient and I actually like the way it looks in my hair.

PS non-stop, finger comb (I no longer comb my hair, finger comb only) and do my hair at home period as I use to be addicted to the salon

I thought I would never go without combing and brushing my hair. now that is something that I never do. never use to like my curls...love them now.

Taking pictures of my hair
Washing my hair in braids

For a while, while I was lurking, I thought y'all were woohoo woohoo.

-Be a heat straightened natural
-Detangle dry hair before shampooing
-Shampoo, DC, and air dry in approx 8 braids, then flatiron each section

Because of these recent choices, I am finally free of the tangles and ssks that wouldn't let my natural hair get past bsl. I am now confident in my ability to make full wsl, although I never would have dreamed I would have a regimen that looks like that.

I still haven't tried an ACV rinse but I tried porosity control. So this is one of my last resorts too. Hmmmm..... distilled water?? I'd like to try it but it seems like I would have to use so much of it to make sure my hair is rinsed well. I have an itchy scalp as it is.

o no I dont use distilled water to rinse it out lol...my water bill is too high to buy tons of distilled water! I just took an empty 16.9 fl oz water bottle, filled it up 1/3 of the way with acv and the rest of the way with distilled water, poured it over my head, left it on a few minutes, then rinsed thoroughly with the water from my shower!!

I would never have thought that I'd find myself in the midst of transitioning from relaxed to natural hair. When I started my HHJ, I was wholeheartedly relaxed with the goal of having healthier hair. But, I changed my mind for the better (for me).

1. No heat regimens: I never thought I would/could/or should disband the use of ALL heat, and I felt those that did had special hair that could tolerate air drying. Now that I have adopted a no heat regimen my hair seems to be thriving even better than before.

2. "Juicing": I tried s-curl and other glycerin based products early on in my hhj and I always experienced adverse effects from using them (ie dry, greasy, coated hair). However, african royale braid spray mixed with kckt and castor oil is the best thing since slice bread!!!

Awww man. BIG CHOPPING TWICE! I mean, 2 years ago...IMPOSSIBLE. :nono:

LHCF got me so into natural hair, and getting my fro as big as possible, defining curls/coils, all that. But the truth is, my HHJ really helped me realize that hair is just hair, it doesn't make me. Also, showing myself that I can just grow my hair relatively effortlessly since I stopped relaxing (years of being ear-length made me realize they weren't for me, personally) makes me more apt to treat my hair as an accessory, and have FUN with it, and not obsess over length. It's been a year since my first buzz-cut, and as long as I remember my LHCF commandments, (and pray for forgiveness to the "hair lawd":fallenang) I am FEARLESS, and I know I can grow it when I WANNA!

- Go natural
Actually, I knew I'd do it eventually, I just thought it would be like 10-15 years from now. My goal coming to the boards was healthy relaxed hair, never intended on going natural any time soon. I've been transitioning for over a year now and only a little bit of relaxed hair left

- Wear non-straight styles once I started growing out my relaxer
I thought I would wear my natural hair straight 100% of the time. Just paying attention online and in real life, started realizing that there could possibly be other styles that are cute on me besides straight ones. Plus, its so hard to keep up straight styles and I can feel my ends start to feel dry if I am straightening all the time. I had a set of kinky twists extensions during the summer which I surprisingly loved. Next, I'm going to work on getting a cute twist out and/or braid out on my natural hair and also looking into kinky textured halfwigs. I will definitely wear my hair straight sometimes but not all the time.
