Hey ladies! I'm new to the forum and this my first time starting a thread. So what were some of your haircare practices before you decided to get serious about your hair?

I have to admit I was pretty horrible to my hair before. I just didn't care about it because it was so coarse and unmanageable. I used heat several times a week, I wore it out all the time, hardly ever moisturized, I used shampoos with harsh sulfates and only washed my hair every 2-3 wks til I couldn't stand the itching anymore ..I relaxed bone straight every 5-6 wks and if my silk scarf fell off during the night I would leave it on my pillow and fall back to sleep. And of course I can't forget how I cared more about my weaves than my own hair. :nono:

So as a result?? My hair broke all off and I never saw any growth! I thought it was because my hair just wasn't growing. But once I really started taking care of my hair (after getting fed up with weaves) I realized that I actually get quite a bit of new growth. Now I wash my hair 2x/wk (shampoo & co-wash), use good products, wear protective styles 99% of the time, and stopped using direct heat. So what were some of the changes you've made?

I just wanted to say :welcome: :newbie:

I was never horrible to my hair, I had a few setbacks (self inflicted, medical, etc) and now I am at a place where hair is my hobby and I actually ENJOY dealing with it...before, it was sort of a necessary evil!

I was the opposite of you op, I thought I was really taking care of my hair before. I would go to the salon either every or every other week and get my hair "professionaly" done. I would get my hair blow dried and flat ironed and never understood why my ends were always breaking off. After finding this board on a fluke, I realized that was just too much heat for my hair.

Thanks Janet'!

I was HORRIBLE to mine , me and the hot curler were joined at the hip , and when I would curl I would just hold it there for a looooooooong time , I would curl on dirty hair , I started gluing in weaves and would rip it out , etc ,I was a mess all to look cute everyday SMH....anyway now I protective style almost all the time , deep condition nurture and my hair has grown bigger and healthier then I have ever imagined. Im going to post my updated hair growth w/ before pics of my broken off- damaged- never touched my shoulders hair ....

Welcome and honestly the only problem that I had with my hair was glue-in weaves (stopped wearing them back in 07 since b/f didn't like them). After that, I would just keep coloring my hair repeatedly or relaxing every chance I seen NG. Also stopped that last. One last thing, my stylist set me back each week, she would snip-snip here and there as she claim to be making my hair thicker. It looked nice but the growth wasn't poppin' off:ohwell:

*Welcome $inna-$pice*

I wasn't really bad with my hair execpt blowdrying my hair with dax grease to make it straight (this is when I had a relaxer). Also getting a relaxer every 8 weeks when I barely had any new growth, getting trims when I didn't need them and my major sin washing my hair only 3-4 times a year since I was in braids.

Ironically my hair flourished under my nasty braid regimen. The relaxing every 8 weeks did me in along with two bad relaxers and not properly detangling after removing my weave cause my long term stretch to become the big chop.

This site helped me learn how to take of my hair especially wearing braids.
