You complain about No-lye's dryness...but was it before LHCF?

I'm doing a ton of research about self relaxing. And even tho, I've been using lye for 15 years. It's been at the salon. And I don't trust myself to use it on my own.

so i'm leaning towards no-lye for self relaxing. But when i read about its dry-ness and calcium build-up...i noticed that a lot of people complained about it.

However my question is....do u people who complain about no-lye, use no-lye during the days that you weren't knowledgeable about hair?
Or is no-lye pretty much a battle that will be lost even with all the knowledge about chelating and DC'ing?

can anyone chime in

Why don't you trust yourself? It's the same process whether you use lye or no-lye. Lye doesn't require mixing, so I guess it's easier in that sense. Otherwise I think the application is the same.

I was relaxed using lye at the salon. Then I used no-lye for years when I started self relaxing. Then I used lye and was amazed at the difference and swore I would never use no-lye again. Then I joined LHCF about a year later.

My hair was dry using No-Lye prior to LHCF so my stylist switched me to a Lye relaxer and it was healthier, but still damaged so I went natural.

THEN...I found LHCF as I was trying transition and I learned about texlaxing. I was so happy! Texlaxing is amazing and works well with my 4a/b hair. BUT, I was using No-Lye Mizani and still experienced dryness for that reason. So...I did some research on here and switched to a Lye Mizani for Color Treated hair and my hair is like amazing and shiny and holds moisture! It's wonderful.

The only tip I have is that you should base your scalp...every single time!

Here's my very recent experience. I've used lye (with the exception of maybe one time) for almost 30 years. My Grandmother was a beautician and always recommended lye over no-lye. I went natural last year, but last month decided to relax again and thought maybe a no-lye would be easier on my scalp.

Well it was easier on my scalp, but my hair is as hard as a brick. I've been reading up on chelating shampoos on here and am going to get some tomorrow. I personally will never use no-lye again.

i'm scared cuz i'm slow. I know that lye burns quicker. Which lye relaxer did u use?

You can try the half and half method or have someone help you. My sis and I used to help each other until we got the hang of it. When it was her turn she did the front and I did the back, and vice versa when it was my turn.

When I first switched to lye I used Dudley's which is nice. Now I use Elasta Qp which I love. I tried Creme of Nature and it was awful. Maybe you should try the same brand your stylist used.

If you base well you shouldn't get any burning. I never have burning.

From my experience, lye relaxers are better than no-lye. I always self relax and the lye does not burn quicker or any worse than no-lye relaxers. I actually don't have any problems since I learned to base my scalp :yep:

Lye is horrible on my hair, even the mild. I switched from no lye to lye after all of the lye/no lye threads. With no lye, my hair was a little dry, but I only needed to learn how to moisturize it properly.

That lye jacked up my edges and nape, and thinned my hair. It was way too strong. I was losing "nice sized" balls of hair after I relaxed it.

With no lye, I don't lose ANY hair when I relax my hair.

So I switched back to no lye, and my hair is recovering very well.

I tried lye because a lot of the girls here use it and it is no mix, but I just could not take it. I have used no-lye all my life and I never have any trouble with it. I tried 3 applications of lye and and each time I was underprocessed and burned. The fact that I didnt base probably contributed to it, but I tried to do it just like I do my no-lye. I never burned or bassed no matter what strength relaxer I used when I used no-lye.

I have used Lye for my last 3 relaxers and what I like about it is that my hair doesn't look as dry and dull when airdried, it also doesn't look stringy/overprocessed because it doesn't straighten the hair quickly even though I use Silk Elements coarse. However my scalp does burn super quickly and I do lose alot of hair when rinsing the relaxer out which never happened with no-lye. I still have another 2 and a half tubs of the Lye relaxer left, I will continue for now but my try no-lye afterwards to see if remind myself why i left it behind.

yup even before hair boards, I had tried no lye relaxer (at the salon) and didnt like the dry brittleness that came with it. Even my stylist was like, "hair isnt supposed to feel like this " lolol

My stylist used no-lye on me before I stopped going to her last year. I knew my hair was always dry, but it wasn't until I started reading about the differences between no-lye and lye relaxers that it clicked for me. I noticed an immediate difference in my ability to retain moisture and softness when I started self-texlaxing with lye relaxers. Of course, I still have to grow out the older no-lye relaxed ends, but I'm sticking with lye.

This is me, my hair has always hated no lye relaxer.

When I first relaxed, I was going to the salon for relaxers and my stylist used lye relaxers so the issue never came up. When I started self-relaxing, I used no-lye relaxers because I figured it was safer, but my hair was drying out. So, I went back to the salon to get the lye relaxers. When I decided to go DIY again, I went down to Sally's and bought a Motions Lye mild. The first two times I relaxed I was underprocessed because I was scared to leave it on too long. The third time was a charm and I haven't looked back since.

Has anyone who's been using chelating shampoos found that they relieve/solve the dryness problem that comes from no-lye? I've just done a touch-up with no-lye and am thinking of using it from now on.

I've been using ORS no-lye for 5+ years now. I've never had a problem with dryness or any of the other bad things associated with no-lye relaxers.
