Name the craziest things you've done to grow your hair out. This is before you discovered techinque and healthy hair practices. This is when you thought it was the product or some secret formula.

For me, it was definitely MTG. I bought it online and would apply it to my scalp day and night. I remember being deadlocked in a smooch with my boyfriend and thinking " My hair smells like bacon bits.":nono:

I knew I was crazy when I considered dumping peanut butter on my head. Listening to folks on the internet... they'll have you doing a deep conditioning treatment with dessert. Tell!

Once when I was little I mixed some blue magic hair grease with pink lotion and rubbed that mess through my whole head. I thought I was whipping up an ultra-moisturizing concoction.:lachen:But I was only 11 at the time and had not yet come to see how bogus a lot of our traditional hair practices are.

Another time, I tried doing nothing to my hair so it would grow. I was kind of on the right track with low manipulation, but I was doing it wrong. I put my hair up in a tight bun that was breaking my ends and I washed my hair every other week at the most. Itch city, itch city.:nono:

wearing my hair down every day. i thought less manipulation and hair products would lead to more growth. also giving it a thorough combing and brushing before bed

i did nothing crazy because i didnt think my hair could get any better.... i thought it was the longest and healthiest it could be and no one made me think other wise. i just figured if i wanted longer hair i had to get a weave cause "every black girl with long hair was wearing a weave"

so yeah, nothing crazy, just the same ole products that dont work that's geared towards black women to give us the illusion of healthy moisturized hair while making it dry and brittle all at once :D

Oh, I used to mix products to. I actually used to crush vitamins and add them to my shampoos until my mom caught me one day and eyed me like I was lining cocaine. I was on the right track though.

I slathered mayo in my hair as a conditioner. I've saturated vasoline in my hair as a moisturizer and softner.

I wore micro braids for 3 months thinking my hair would grow...of course it did grow, but I lost edges/nape in the process and ended up losing a few inches all over b/c I didn't take care of my ends before or during the install...:ohwell:

Going into Family Dollar, wearing a baseball cap low, and buying 2 tubes of coochie cream....and applying this cream to my scalp for a few weeks even though it gave me headaches...all in the hopes of a quick inch that grew in it's own good time.

In HS I used to hang my head over the side of the bed and massage my scalp or brush my hair hanging upside down b/c being upside down increased blood flow.

The dizziness was NOT worth it. :lachen:

Yeah, I remember thinking we were supposed to brush our hair 500 times before bed...... watching Marsha Brady do that had me thinking that all this time LOL.

my older sister & I use to brush our hair 100 strokes each night! (as kids)
We were told "that's what white folks did to get long hair!"

I do vaguely remember Laura Ingles Wilder on Lil' House & the Prairie brushing every night before bed!!!

never worked!! roflmao

wow i see above someone mentioned this! maybe i was short 400 strokes!!!

dayuumm! dayuuum! dayuuuuuuum!

ETA: ok i see it twice now!^^^^^ now i just feel stupid

I thought that not washing your hair made your hair grow. so I wouldn't wash my hair for months, I wouldn't do anything with my hair, except straighten it, and dye it. lol I was a mess

if it makes you feel better i always thought it was 100 too lmao

I thought it was 100 strokes a night. I remember being all of 5yrs old at great-gmas house brushing barbie's hair 100 strokes before bed and she'd yell that I was going to 'make that doll baby bald' :lachen:

I also combed my hair quite a lot, not qute 100 times, but more than necessary.

Tbh, I thought doing so made my hair look healthier. In fact I remember concluding at the time that the healthiness would be because combing/brushing would stimulate the hair follicles.

MONTHS?! Oh my, wasn't your hair crazy itchy?! I would have scabs EVERYWHERE... :nono:

greasing , greasing and greasing.!

No offense to those who still do. Just that i was creating a grease filled head that i wouldn't wash sometimes until i went back to get a touch up so that's what 4-6 weeks of grease? And for someone like me who sweats in their head....Not too pretty!

But that's what miseducation and lack of knowledge will do to ya! Nowadays I will smack someone if u tell me I can't put water on my head for 2 weeks. EVERY style I have had I have ALWAYS washed EVERY week. Ind braids with hair attached and even now with crochet braids. EVERY week. I don't play that lol

actually that's supposed to actually work lol

Shoot Soliel, I just did this the other day and from looking at your hair it looks like it's working! I lovvvveeee your hair!!!

Not to mention that Mz.MoMo looks like she stays upside down with a massage brush going through her hair every day!!! Is that how you've been getting your hair to grow so long???? LOL!!:lachen:

I used to put all kinds of grease ithroughout my hair (can you say petrolatum and mineral oil)! I also used to style my freshly and not-so-freshly relaxed hair with a rat-tail comb (the fine-toothed part) because that's what they used at the salon.

I also used to get braids that were meant to be "medium-sized"..... in a white boarding school, everyone knows it's your hair when they find a braid lying around (I lost so many pieces of hair and my poor edges back then!)

lol it was :perplexed but I thought I was hot stuff because I was the black girl witht the longest hair in my area, at raggidy APl. it was horrible, I was dandruff city, and there was hair all over my shirts, all the time. No one could tell me anything though.

I didn't think Dr. Miracle was so bad. That relaxer was drying thought. It needed some EVOO.

I washed my hair with beer 2 years ago to wash out the relaxer...it didnt work of course my hair was very shiny though...

In high school, I read about a DC treatment with raw eggs. So i washed my hair, cracked a raw egg in it (just that), put a shower cap on it, and went to sleep. When I woke up in the morning, I had hard, raw egg caked on my pillow and dried out and hard egg caked in my hair. Ugh, the smell! Egg smell make me weasy and no matter how many times I washed my hair, all I smelled was raw egg. I was sick to my stomach all day. It was disgusting! :nono:

i have tried (not all at once):
blue magic, mayo, beer, yogurt, mashed banana (i was picked that s**t outta my hair for a week), vaseline, raw egg, and 100 brush strokes a night. o and my mom used to tell me that dandruff meant my hair was growing... thank god i washed my hair weekly though. whew i would have been a mess otherwise.

:lachen::lachen::lachen: that post had me crackin up
