Complimented on "my" hair today

I received a compliment on my hair today. Was it a backhanded complimented? Not really. But it still irked me nonetheless.

Here's a little backstory. I was speaking with one my White co-workers one time about hair (not sure how we got on the subject) and she mentions that she feels bad for one of her nieces because she has bad hair. She goes on about about the how the little one's sister has the good curly hair (think 3a/b) and she has the bad curly hair. I don't remember word for word but she basically said if she was black, she'd fit right in. :ohwell: From my avatar, you can see I'm natural. I do a wash and go curly fro a lot of the times, which I think I was sporting on that day, so I really scrunched my face at her when she said this. :perplexed Then I proceeded to tell her that her niece's hair isn't bad, her mom probably just doesn't know how to handle it. I told her about cowashing and not touching the child's head with a brush, b/c it will only make it more frizzy. I don't think she heard any of what I was saying.

Anyways, that is what makes today's compliment all the more annoying. She said in a really pleasant voice, "oh Amber, I meant to tell you I really like your hair". I am wearing a freaking wig. It'd be one thing if she complimented my regular hair, whether it was styled in a wng, a braid out, twist out, bun, updo, whatever, but the first time I get a compliment from her is when I'm wearing this fake loosely curled half wig. WTF ever...I gave a sheepish "thanks". And she said I didn't sound like I liked it. I said it was okay, but I honestly wish it was bigger, which I do. I wish it looked more like my hair. I just wanted to give my hair a break for a week.

Had we not had the previous conversation or if someone else had said they liked my hair, I would have said a thanks and kept it moving. I wouldn't have given a second thought.

It's not the first time she has said something totally stupid. Just another example. She said that Blacks look "weird" with light eyes. She gave an example of Terrance Howard. :nono: I pretty much told her she was crazy. She mentioned later that she tans and lightens her hair, and so I told her think White people look like zombies when they have dark hair, blue eyes, and pale skin. My husband told the next time she says something dumb, to ask her if she ever considered that what she is saying may be deemed offensive by others? Being that she didn't say anything offensive today or really hasn't since, I have not had the opportunity to politely check her.

Anyone else had this happen? Not that the person is being mean, but you know they have preconceived notion of what "good" or nice looking hair is, so it makes their compliment of your wig or weave a bit...Idk unsettling or offputting?

I have nothing nice to say about the female so I am keeping my mouth closed! What I might say would offend! I'd like to remain a lady :hippie4:

Keep your head up!

Sorry about this.... :nono: Some people just don't know what to say, or they don't know enough about other cultures to really know what could be deemed as offensive or off-putting to others. :ohwell:

However, I'm not trying to condone your co-worker's "compliment" at all, but did you consider the fact that perhaps she may not have known that you were wearing a wig??

I'll be honest, before I joined LHCF 7 years ago, I REALLY didn't know all the "hair secrets" a lot of black women have. There are even some weaves and wigs these days that look so REAL that even I have to do a double take and look REAAAAALLY closely in order to tell that it's a wig.

Just a thought.... :look:

I think you are going to have to hit her with a nicety (nice and nasty) response...she'll refrain from her stupid comments.

My actions in red....

She said that Blacks look "weird" with light eyes. Next time try "Wow....you're pretty weird yourself (with a confused look on your face:perplexed). Then walk away.

Can't be too harsh or over critical of what others people think / say, not everyone has made the same realizations about life as our selves (not saying you are doing so). That is how i respond to situations like that , sometimes they don't know any better.. I dismiss their comments.

LOL! Your husband is rather diplomatic.

I would have given her KMN's quick lesson on white colonization and its effects on modern life. LMAO! I promise she'd never talk to you again.

Well I dont blame you for being bothered and think DH's approach is good. After all, you cant force someone to like your hair and if that's how she feels too bad for her and her limited scope.

Whether or not she knew it was my hair or not is not my personal issue, its the fact that this is the very time I hear her say anything positive about my hair, and it figures it would be a different curl pattern and silkier texture than my hair. It's like oh, so that's what you think culry hair is. She went on and on about how she wishes her hair was curly like that.

People like what they like. I can respect that. What annoys me is her diahrea (sp?) of the mouth. And admittedly, it is because of the past conversations that I am a bit sensitive to anything that she has to say that involves her giving her opinion about others.

Yeah, he is always rather diplomatic. It can be pretty dayum annoying at times, too. :yep:

I still have to work with this chick, so I don't want to go off on her. Some of you ladies are so quick on your feet when it comes to the subtle disses. I usually just stand their with the quizzical look. Maybe I should use that and just go with. Stand there, tilt head to side, and give the "I-can't-believe-you-just-said-that" look.

Yeah do that THEN walk away :lachen:. At that point she can just talk to herself.

Yeah...patience really is a virtue...She's one of the one's that I would limit conversation with: I have a low threshold for stupidity...

I'm sure something like this has happened to me. But for the most part, the white people I hang around have an annoying fascination with my hair and if they weren't looking at it with stars in their eyes i'd probably be a little offended, but they seem to be in awe of it so what can one do about that? LOL.

Like 20something said, some people are just ignorant to certain things, but my general rule is to check ignorance at the door. As opinionated as I am I almost feel that I would be doing the person a disservice if I didn't at least try to politely point out their ignorance.

If I were ignorant about a certain issue, I would want someone to correct me cuz I hate the thought of walking around sounding like a fool. Also, I always try to take the opportunity to speak my mind on things like this, cuz there was a time when I didn't and when I'd miss my chance I'd end up spending days--sometimes even weeks--just stewing about it and thinking "AWWW I shouldah said this, no I shouldah said that!!!" It's so frustrating.

Unfortunately I have worked with people like this before and it's not a cake walk. Just like we have to learn about the dominate culture-they in turn should have to learn about us or at least if they don't know then ask questions or look up info on the internet..etc.
My solution was to try to get"such persons" to think about the words that were coming out of their mouth. I have eyes like Terrance Howard so you can imagine the ignorance I've heard from "them" over the years but anyway your husband is absolutely right(Hang in there). It's hard having to be the bigger person.:wallbash::wallbash:
