I avoid putting mineral oils on my scalp, but I do use certain products that contain them like Elasta's Recovery lotion. I only use it on my hair never my scalp.

yep...because most products marketed towards us only use it because it's cheaper than using quality oils that nourish the hair. i'd rather use natural oils that don't clog pores and sit on top of my hair.

very true. there are so many other oils out there with beneficial properties.

I try to avoid it as much as possible. I have one deep conditioner that has it but I haven't even used it yet. A long time ago I use to use the coconut oil/grease that has the mineral oil and petroleum in it all the time for my two strand twists. I really liked the smell and for a while it was fine, but then I began to have terrible cyst like breakouts on my forehead. It was awful and I didn't realize where it was coming from. I stopped using the grease and switched to oils, then my breakouts subsided altogether. I haven't products w/ the stuff since.

Thanks for this tip, but my hair does not like leave-ins with protein. This is part of the reason why I am such a PJ. Believe you me, it has been very hard to find a leave-in that works for my hair. :ohwell: My hair does not like protein or glycerin. Maybe I will just have to use oil and water and call it a day.

i hope i dont have that problem too. life is so much harder when you wear you hair out. i've got a sew-in. i use ORS olive oil monthly :ohwell:

My hair used to love mineral oil but when i started my hair journey i gave it up because i believed this was clogging my pores and hindering my growth. Now im not so sure. I think it works for some. I've still got some Keracare moisturiser sitting in the bathroom so I might give it a go again.

Aveda Elixir is a wonderful leave in!

I use mineral oil everyday in my hair. I style my hair with Let's Jam Styling Maximum Gel everyday, and I grease my scalp with All Ways Indian Hemp.

Ever since I started to avoid it my hair has thrived. I'm glad that I found out about it's downside. :p

For the most part yes. but every other week i use my dominican products on one of my two poo days and they contain mineral oil and petroleum- but they make my hair look and feel great. Also my cholesterol contains mineral oil too.

Thanks, I looked at it and it has glycerin. My hair does not like leave-ins with glycerin or excessive protein. Make my hair dry and crispy. So far, the only leave-ins that my hair has been able to tolerate are Mane and Tail (it was alright), Pantene Detangle Light (I will be using this more often) and Bumble and Bumble Leave-In/Conditioner. I finishedu p the MNT and BNB and have been using the Detangle Light. I am looking for a staple and I dont believe that Detangle Light has enough conditioners for me.

Believe you me, when I am in braids, I will be using up a lot of products that did not work on my hair when it is out. I.e. Infusium 23, Deep Brilliance Manage, Aubrey's Detangle Go Luster, Aphogree Green Tea Leave-in. What did all of these products have in common? They either have lots of glycerin or protein in them, stuff that makes my hair hard and sticky. As a matter of fact, I am going to post a spin-off thread about this.

it made my hair feel ok...what really bothers me about the Giovanni products is the smell...its the same smell as that Silk Element line from Sally's...smells like old womens perfume to me despite how the products made my hair feel i just couldn't deal with the smell

I actually like Giovanni. The trick is to use only a little for your whole head. This definitely one of those products that works best when used in moderation.

As for mineral oil, I don't know why they even put it in products at all. It does NOTHING to moisturize the hair. The oil just sits on top of the strands.
My hairdresser suggested Motions daily moisturizer to me when I first took my braids out after having them in for two years. It made my hair feel oily AND dry at the same time, but I still used it for more than a year because I trusted my hairdresser. It's no wonder I'm dealing with so much breakage now! My hair was not moisturized for more than a year!
Now, I use ORS Olive Oil in the bottle and it's fabulous. I don't use ANY products with mineral oil now.

Same here with me

I don't buy moisturizers with mineral oil, which is why I will never use Pantene Relaxed & Natural moisturizer, lotion, or spray. I was going to buy something from that line until I read the ingredients. When I first read about mineral oil on Cathy Howse's site I decided I would always avoid it.
