I have just came back from my Dermatologist and she is gonna start me on Roaccutane/Accutane :whyme:

A bit of history I suffer with acne and have done for 20 years, its mild now but its the scars that reallly bother me.

I have taken this before, it gave me perfect skin  BUT had some side effects, dry skin, dry lips, dry eyes and I experienced DRY HAIR & HAIR THINNING :wallbash::spike:

I feel bitter sweet about it all, my hair is thriving at the mo but I just need to accept that my hair journey may be over for now:cry:

I really hope I can overcome this, but my face wins:look:

Hey Kizzy!!!

Im so sorry youre going thru this and I feel your pain. I have suffered from acne myself for about 20 years and like you it was the scars that bothered me most. Ive taken accutane on and off for about 5 years and had the dry eyes (yeah try taking contacts out of eyes that are drier than the desert! LOL), the dry, peeling lips and dry nostrils...but I cant say that I found it to have any effects on my hair.

But everyone reacts to things differently. But buck up! Being forewarned is being forearmed (or something like that! :lachen:)...now you know what to expect and maybe you can do somethings to if not exactly prevent it maybe you can slow the process down. Maybe drink more water and take omega fatty acids or flax seed to help combat the dryness. Maybe try protective styling and adding LOTS of moisture to your regimin.

I mean I dont know that these things will help but it never hurts to try. Did you discuss this with your doctor?

Good luck!

BTW...I thought Accutane had been taken off the market. Cuz if not Im RUNNING to the dermatologist!!! :cowgirl: I LOVE that stuff!!!!!!!!

Hi blackindia07,

So nice to hear from someone who has been through the same thing:grin: I am so not looking forward to the side effects. The last time I was on it I was not taking care of my hair or know :lachen: so I can't be 100% sure that the drug was the sole reason of thinning. So now I am would be good to see the REAL effects.
You are spot on about taking more water and adding some oils to my regime that may counter act it :goodone:

I live in the UK and our brand of accutane is called roaccutane, its not only on the market its also FREE for me, God Save the Queen...lol

Check it out

Accutane has many side effects even on the reproductive system. Is there anything else you can take? Go to see a facial plastic surgeon they have no surgical chemical peel that will work with no side effects.
Good luck

I took Accutane as a teen, and it has never thinned my hair. I had two 6 month treatments. I dont even think thinning hair is a side effect of Accutane.

Maybe sommething else is causing your thinning.

Hi hair4romheaven, After 20 years there really isnt much that I have not tried, I really wish that something would of helped, the main prob is no matter what I do to the surface its a temp fix, I need sorting internally, this is the last resort :wallbash:

Cherrypie, Everyone is different some people get severly depressed and try and kill themselve a few have actually done it! Didnt effect me like that thank god

It could have a been a purely timing thing but it happened at the same time as many of my other side effects.

This time round as I am looking after my hair, I can see the true results

Good luck Kizzylonghair. I am a big believer in having pretty skin :yep:. I hope this go round with the medicine doesn't affect your hair badly. With the knowledge you have now I think you're going to be okay. Keep us updated.

Thank You, I can't wait for some pretty skin:locks:, Hopefully can update the board in a few months with hair STILL left on my head

OP i hope it works out for you...but start with this you haven't taken the meds yet and you're already accepting hair falling out...have faith that it won't!!!
sending positive vibes/thinking your way****

I took Accutane last year and my hair was fine. I have a supplement and diet regimen, if you're interested that knocked out about 90% of all the symptoms. PM me, if you like, dear.

Bon courage!

You're right. I looked up the syptoms of Accutane, and guess what? THINNING OF THE HAIR IS A SYMPTOM OF ACCUTANE.:yep:

I didn't get that, and I didn't even see it on the list back then. The two sets of times that I took Accutane I got the SAME symptoms, so you better ask your dematologist if something can be done for this, cause you may get the same symptoms as you did before.

Sorry!:ohwell:

I hope it works out for you OP, hair AND skin.

i think that I had thinning due to accutane, but i think that some of my thickness is coming back now.

Hi kizzylonghair, I empathize with your frustration and while I don't have any experience with accutane, I just wanted to jump in and send some good vibes your way. A couple of folks have already posted that they didn't have to deal with this particular side effect and I hope you can reap the rewards without them as well. You have a great resource in LHCF and I'm sure everyone here will do what they can to help you out!

It's a shame we have to make the choice between clear skin and keeping our hair. Hopefully this time it won't thin your hair. I'd probably hop on board with Nioxin or something like that to keep the scalp as healthy as possible during that time. I can relate to the drying of the lips, skin and all because I had that affect with Doryx. I got the hair thinning part too which was not listed as a side affect of Doryx but coincidentally it started a month after taking it so I'm convinced that's what did it.

If I could run back times I would have kept my scalp EXTRA nourished and drank MORE water and took a B Complex vitamin. Because after all, taking Doryx for about 3 months DID work and the cystic/hormonal acne is still non-existent for the last 6 months or so (Thank God). And at least I can start focusing on my hair now, just like you can afterwards. You already have a jump on being a part of this terrific hair board with ladies who have all the hair advice you'll ever need.

Good luck!

Hi Hairsnob, I did needed to think a little before I said yes, but hey I can always rock a shorter style for a while, having clear skin is far more important to me.
But as you say I know what is going so I need to get prepared.

Glad to hear your skin is clear....what a great feeling

Is the Accutane going to clear up the acne or take away the scars?

No it wont clear up the scars but it will keep new breakouts from forming causing more scarring and therefore giving the old scars a chance to heal. I am a big believer in accutane and did not suffer an serious side effects though I have read there are many. Good luck Kizzy and keep us updated!

Blackindia,

You are right it does not clear scars, but it felt as though it did:grin:. With the rest of the skin clear it certainly took the attention away making them look irrelveant

Thanks
