MBL no Protective Styles

I think so. I'm nearly bsl and I was sl a year ago. I always wear my hair down and it's grown a lot/become more healthy. I believe I can grow it long without ps.

yaaaaaaaaaaaay well i couldnt answer because I'm not mbl (yet) but my hair grows when it's out and free. and trust, i play in my hair at least three times a day smh (no good I know)

For me personally it's a lot about what I'm prepared to sacrifice. I'm in heavy PS mode at the moment because I'm deep into a stretch, but when I've just got my relaxer I will wear my hair out for weeks and months, but in order to do this though I have to lay off the heat, this way I'm still retaining and I have very little (if any) split ends.

Now that I'm months post relaxer I will occasionally touch up my roots only, but no more than once or twice a month and now my hair is mainly in a bun. Tiresome but this seems to be working for me.

I know we get this thread like twice a month.

It's possible for like 10% of the members of this board. I am not one of them.

No protective styles is very possible. I couldn't say the same if you were to ask me if it was possible to go without doing low-manipulation though.

I don't do pro-styles (outside of the house) but I do low-mani.

OP how would you want to wear your hair most of the time?

For me, with my coarse thick strands.....I know for a fact that I could press my hair every week and a half to two weeks for the rest of the year back to back and still reach my goals. But I think my ends wouldn't be as thick as they could be as a result.

I came here notsomuch into protective styles...but I eventually came to realize all the fun you can have with protective styles and how they actually make caring for your hair much easier and I fell in love. Protective styles dont have to mean wearing a librarian bun for three years. They can be crochet braids, weaves...pixie braids, mini twists, tree braids, yarn braids etc

I want blunt thick healthy ends and I think the break my ends get from PS is really beneficial.

I think it is definitely doable as well. But it's a matter of preference.

Like BMP, I used to be very anti-PS. But my goals over time have changed, as well as my priorities and time.

If I had no other time priorities, I think I would go the no-PS route. But that would take a lot of time styling, as well as deep treatments, for me at least.

If you don't want to do protective styles, you'll have to be low manipulation. Sylver reached waistlength that way.

Hi BMP.

I like many different styles for my hair. I wanted to hear from MBL + if it was possible for them. I know alot of people use PS to retain and wanted to be sure that wasnt the only way

I think the truth is you have to limit play/manipulation. Not something anyone wants to hear until we find out for ourselves. I think anyone can play with long hair for a while but it's probably because they aren't noticing the breaking and thinning and eventually they will see it and have to cut back.

Personally for me no, not so much of the rubbing of the ends on clothing or other things, but because I wouldn't want to wear my hair out everyday with the oils, and other moisturizers laying on my back and arms. Especially in the warmer months, all that hair on my back from day in to day out would drive me to cut it. I always keep my hair up, braid outs, or WNGs in the summer and never wear my hair straight.

low manipulation...meaning braids? what other low manipulation styles are there?

Low-mani is not just styling.....it's also a part of your regimen. For me it includes not shampooing or co-washing any more than once a week (2 when roller set). Doing styles that require little to no manipulation like wash n' go's, twist-outs, braid-outs....all of those I can go without combing for a week sometimes.

My hair is fine and can't take a lot of manipulation so I handle only when necessary.

As far as low manipulation styles, that can be pretty much whatever you want it to be. A lot of ladies make even straight hair low mani.....they just finger comb in between washing or don't comb at all. I think Sylver does something of this sort with her straightened hair and shampoo's every 3 weeks (not exactly sure if it's 2 or 3 weeks). She has a great low-mani regimen.

I think you can, but wearing PS's helped me get from BSL to MBL. I yhink it's different for eveyone though.

I know it is possible, to get to mbl without protective styling. I am just to lazy to do my hair so protective styling is great for me. I am in love with my phony ponytail!!!!!!!!!
