Question... Do I have to have my natural hair

blow-dryed in order to get a cut or trim? Im in the Atlanta area and I have been natural for over two years. I wanted to try something a little different so I called a local salon that was recommended on this site to get a trim. I may even be open to a haircut if they werent scissor happy. I was informed that it couldnt be done unless I was willing to get my hair blow dryed. I have areal problem with that because I dont like to use ANY heat. Could anyone help me with this? I have never been to a salon since being natural with the exception of receiving color so maybe Im wrong?

No, you do not have to have your hair straightened to get a trim. I have not used any heat in over 15 years. Call around to find out what technique they use on natural hair. Two warnings though: 1) do not let anyone use clippers unless you are getting a TWA or a fade and 2) do not let anyone simply skim your picked-out fro with scissors.

I've heard arguments on both sides, but I'd think if you're going to wear your hair in it's natural state, it should be cut like that.

No. But to get it even - wether blunt, u or v shaped - you probably should. If you are worried about damage, blowdry it yourself and go to a barbar for a trim.

Totally agreed! I don't do heat and I'm not going to use heat just in order to get a "proper" hair trimming. It can be done though, without heat. Please, just call around and find out methods.

You can take individual sections, just pull taut, and trim the very ends! Get a trusted person to do the back where you cant reach.

are you getting a style? if you are getting plaits or TST ask them to trim the ends of those..or do it yourself. I just plaited my hair wet the other day and snipped my ends and they feel better then when I "flat ironed" and trimmed last time. GL

Nope. But if you want the cut to be precise, it's better to do it with it blow dried or flat ironed. If you never wear your hair straight, then it's not a big deal tho.

Do you mostly wear your hair straight or curly? Because depending on how you wear it on a daily basis is how you should get it cut. I wear my hair both ways so its in my best interest to straighten my hair and then get a cut. Otherwise the nape area would have to be cut very short and I'd have a weird upside down mullet.

Just make sure you explain to the stylist what your expectations are.

Depends on how you wear your hair the majority of the time. If you wear it kinky most of the time I say cut it while in that state. (I have always preferred to put my hair in 2 strand twists and snip off the ends) BUT if you like to go back and forth between heat straightened and natural then it is better to at least blow dry before trimming, this way the ends will have a much more even/neater ends when wearing straight styles.

You can twist it and just clip the ends off each twist. I saw someone do it like that on youtube.

Thanks everyone for their responses! I wear my hair in its natural state 98% of the time. I have no plans to straighten until I hit the three year mark. I wear twist outs and wash n go's most of the time and I was thinking of allowing a stylist to cut a style 'cause my bangs and sides are really long. However Im scared to let anyone touch for fear that Ill come out of the salon with a twa.erplexed Any additional suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Try Curltopia in Smyrna or Malaika at Helmet Worx on Piedmont..Both cut hair while curly. In my opinion if you are getting it cut into a style , do it curly...if you are getting it trimmed--its hard to tell how much needs to be trimmed in its natural state so they may cut more than you need/want.

That depends on weather you like to wear your hair straight from time to time. If you NEVER straighten then I suppose it wouldn't matter. I feel fully comfortable doing search and destroys while my hair is kinky.... but trimming is something I would only do on pin straight hair because I feel when your hair is coily its very hard to decipher what needs to be cut and what needs to be saved. I like wearing my hair straight from time to time so I like maintaining an even, U shape. I've seen people that trim their hair while kinky and when they straighten it all out their hair is 68 various lengths as a result.

I don't like trimming though I'm all about search and destroys now.
