What shall I do next? I know, I know, it's my decision, but I like talking to my hair ladies and getting their mind on hair matters. So, let's have some fun . . . I'm sporting a shadow fade, but this crop grows so fast I need to decide what's next. It's funny how fast the stuff grows when you don't care; i.e., ain't looking.

What do you think would look best on this ole gal? Maybe to make this easier I'll give some pertinent info, I:

  • Live in a sub tropical climate
  • Work in healthcare
  • Have a carefree, uninhibited personality
  • Tend to be "joy"ful
  • Red is my fav color (just thought I'd throw that in)
  • Oh, and I love to dance (can't you just see me being spun around by the man with long locks flowing as I turn? LOL)

Here's some pics to see various things I've done in the past:

I think you look great with Salt and Pepper Locs. Maybe starting out with Cultured Locs and grow them to WL. HHG!

I LOVE the salt n pepper look, especially with locs. I've seen some gorgeous women sporting that look. And they always have a great aura about themselves, like they give off this joyful, content, lighthearted, yet still sophisticated and mature vibe.

I say go for the salt n pepper locs. :)

eta: i think BSL is a good max length for locs

Even though salt and pepper locks do look nice, I picked the WL option. Maybe it's because that's my goal too. :giggle: Anyway here are some other reasons to support my choice for you.

- With you hair at WL it would be pretty long, so you can cut it at any length at anytime for whatever reason. So you can try to dread your hair afterward to change it up. Basically, you have a lot to work with.

- Since you live in a tropical climate you shouldn't have a problem getting that extra length since most people report having growth spurts when the weather is warm in cold climates. (I read in a thread somewhere on this board that hair grows 10% faster in warmer weather.) Also, some people don't like having their hair flowing when it's hot, so you can protective style a lot of the time, you kill two birds with one stone, a style to help retain length and protect the ends while keeping your body cool and comfortable.

- You work in healthcare so you probably have to keep your hair in a bun anyway, here's where protective styling comes in!

- Wouldn't you just LOVE going to the beach with long WL hair blowing freely in the wind?

- As for if you should dye it or not, I don't know, totally up to you! :drunk: You can always do rinses though instead of using ammonia and/or peroxide based dyes to keep the health of your hair at its fullest while still having a fun colour. Since red is your favourite colour anyway, you can use red in your hair. A lot of ladies like henna and henna gives off that red stain naturally anyway so that's another alternative. :yep:

I might be back later with more points but those are the main ones that came to mind when I first read your post. Enjoy!

Hey hon, what's the difference between cultured and organic dreading?

Hey Sweetie,

Here's Lovin' Locks' definition of dreads:

Cultured - manipulated by self or a loctitian, twisted, kept "manicured", regular washing of the hair, this is a method of guiding the locks to shape and form like I want (or as best as I could as hair sometimes has a mind of its' own)

Organic - letting nature take its course; do NOTHING except wash the hair, the dreads form as they may (you ever seen locks that look like a big, flat pancake/paddle? I've seen 'em online, in pics on Rastas . . . that would NOT be my style

I would like my dreads to be about half the size of a #2 wood pencil and hand somewhere between my bra and my waist . . . . oohhhh yeah

Oooh Chica,

You just took me on a mind journey with that explanation. Thank you, thank you for posting.

Namaste,

Hi Aireen,

Your pouty avatar is too cute.

Okay, here's my response to your way cool, well thought out post:

I love red for sure, but NOT for my hair, LOL. I am pleasantly surprised at how many dread heads I am seeing in Central Florida INCLUDING in the hospital. Even one of the whoreish physicians (oooh, did I write "whoreish", oops did it again) at my hospital has 'em. Many locked heads so I don't have to worry about bunning for that reason. :beer2:

Yeah, WL, if my growth pattern hasn't changed would probably take me 4 years. Sooooo, IF I were going to dread it would be now as I am growing out of the shadow fade. It will be easier to do so when my hair is approx. 2" and have it dread and grow, vs. waiting the 4+ years to get to WL and THEN attempting to lock which with my texture will take minimum one year. I have tried locking 5 times (literally) and the longest I went was about 8 months and alas, no lockie. So, I am thinking 1-2 years for this stuff to really lock up. So again, I'd go ahead and get started on locks now IF that's what I am going to do.

I like WL Red hair. Not crayon red, just tinted.

With WL hair you have many style options, and the red is just pretty.

Aww, shucks, thank you for the compliment!

Yeah, I agree, I would not like red on my hair either but I know a lot of people love it though.

I was actually torn between those two choices because I like the idea of locks a lot too. Whatever you decided though, let us know! Maybe make a thread with some pics of what you chose when you get to your goal length for whatever particular style you decide to go with. :)
