Its at Sally's they will know what youre talkin about. And@ Ayeshia eventho your hair didnt come out, you still look adorable and your hair looks fabu.

I have a question when you are applying your heat protectant to your hair, how do you apply it? Do you smooth it on in sections? or Do you just smooth it on over your whole head? I want to make sure that I am doing it right...although I am not flat ironing right now...I just wanna know so when I do on rare occassions.

Just had a big fat failed flatiron attempt too!!!!!!!!!! It came out looking like the biggest blowout you've ever seen. The ironic part was that it was so so so buttery soft- like a giant pillow of fluff! SOOO great to touch... but it looked awkward! I don't know what happened! It was reverting as I was ironing it!

I blowdried it on LOW using the Andis ionic.

Then, I used:
maxiglide
beyond straight
the end

The maxiglide was on 6 the whole time... but the ends weren't bone. straight. In fact, the whole time, I never managed to get the hair bone straight :(

Worst of all, I don't know what to do with it now!!! We tried everything - roller setting it, silk wrapping it, braiding it.... Nothing looked good. IT's too straight to do a nice braid-out, too puffy to look like anything other than a giant silky fro... :wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:

Anyone with ideas for

A) how to 4a/b hair from natural fro to bone straight so it has SWAANG!
B) What styles to do with hair that is "in between" - ie. look like a silky blowout.

Don't know about A) but for B) you might try Bantu knots. Since it's kinda straight already add some leave in (like hawaiian silky, Sebastian's Potion 9) or gel (eco styler) to each section then make the knots. Wait a few hours or overnight (or sit under the dryer for 15 min) and then enjoy a killer knot out! Good luck!

P.S. Post pictures if it works

That sounds like how my flat irons used to be. I created a thread on here with pics. "Naturals secret for perm straight hair in one pass". Search that and I will also bump it for you.

A) First, You need to get a 100% ceramic iron like a CHI. I have a maxiglide and it never worked for me-- maybe I'm just too "4b" for it. The Chi is the only thing that has worked. I also have the generic Chi from Sally's and it only gave me a blow-out look like described.

Next, you need to incorporate the comb chase method for flat ironing. It is the only thing that got my ends straight. Like the original poster, I could never get my thick ends completely straight even w/the chi-- until I incorporated the comb-chase technique.

You should do a youtube search (i'll try to find a video), its pretty easy to do it, just use one hand, not two, and hold the small tooth carbon comb (get from Sally's- heat-proof) upside down, and glide thru on the ends; hold in front of the flat iron.

I almost forgot, u need to blowdry your hair before u flat iron. Get it as straigt as possible. I use the tension method which is more effective for me in getting straighter hair. Use a small amount of heat protectant before you blow dry. Then move on to flat iron.

B) I have worked w/many blow-out- like flat ironed hair days. 4-6 big bantu knots over nitght will give u a great bantu knot out in the morning. Or u can just twist the hair for a twist out; or wear small/mini-twists for a style.

Use hair butter to achieve all of these looks. I would avoid products that are watery or water based b/c it will just revert your hair back to a fro (like activator or gels). Shea butter (mixed w/coconut oil or jojoba oil) or elasta qp mango butter are awesome for these styles.

I'm not sure I understand the bold. When hair is straight, I think it creates a beautiful braid out, which is why our relaxed sistahs sport some of the cutest braidouts, IMO.

The only time I wore a braid out was when my hair was straight. I wasn't planning on it, but I used to get to work at some ungodly hour of the morning so I had 3 hours in which I could get ready before start of business. So I usually fixed my hair at work. Well, I had been sporting these braids for a spell and wanted to wear my hair out for a change, or in some cute updo that day. What I didn't realize was I forgot my comb. :whyme: I usually undo braids with fingers so I didn't know I had no comb till I had undone my braids and was horrified to find no comb. I didn't know what to do and while still trying to figure it out a solution, my boss (white) arrived at work and when she saw my hair, exclaimed "You crimped it! It looks so good!" :perplexed Grateful for that pass, I wore it like that all day...and considered it a new style:

Also, you could wear it in a cut updo bun, a puffy ponytail, that mohawk updo that I cannot remember whom to attribute it to. Or get ideas from Mwedzi's album or Happily Me's. They wear their hair sorta straight and seem to be doing well.

There's your culprit. No disrespect to you or anyone else on th board who may use this brand, but from my experience, Hot Tools is not going to give you the heat you need to straighten well. In my pre- Chi ceramic flat iron days, I had one of these, too. My hair was always puffy. It never laid like I wanted it to or got bone straight like it does with a Chi.

It also helps if you have a nice protectant/frizz serum before flat ironing. I've used Chi Silk, Loreal Smooth Intense, and Loreal Nature's Therapy Heat Control.

100% agree... Its the hot tools iron. Some can use it, and even cheaper flat irons, some can't. I happen to be one that can't, and what u described is exactly what used to be the results of my flat ironed styled when using the hot tools iron.

please dont forget the forgotten step of well conditioned hair. when your hair is well conditioned, all those extra steps and products are not needed.

As mentioned earlier, technique plays a big part. When I first got my Sedu, I was so excited to finally be able to get that "fresh from the salon" flat iron finish! Uh, no. I ran into the same issues you did and my hair looked like I flatironed it with a cheap thing from the dollar store.

Initially, I blamed Sedu for making a crappy flatiron, but after watching some videos I realized I was the one with crappy skills. :lachen:With a little more practice, I'mma gonna get that salon swang down! :yep:

Yeah, I'm glad these smooth & simple techniques have allowed me to knock the stylist completely out of the equation...
