Regardless of how healthy your hair is, or how gentle you are, there will ALWAYS be some level of breakage. The amount of breakage is what's important.
While strong, our hair strands are not made of steel. There will be manipulation, and just general wearing down of the cuticle over time. A few broken hairs after combing, washing, etc is ok. It's when your shirt and bathroom counter and floor are covered with broken hair that you have a problem.
My hair is pretty health, and I still get a few (1-10) broken hairs a day.
I don't know if its possible. This has been heavy on my mind lately. Today I caught the tail end of Oprah and when they did a close up of her hair.....broken apex hairs, right at the top of her head standing up. I bring her up because many people on the boards have noted what beautiful hair she has - due to her personal stylist, and we know she takes care of her hair.
I have never had a period when my hair did not break during manipulation in a varying degree - with the exception of right after a relaxer retouch. I have worked on people before whose hair did not break at all and they have no broken hair "fly aways", but their hair is markedly different from mine.
I am beginning to think breakage is directly related to the foundational structure of the hair of the individual - and I am not sure if that can be "typed" or categorized. There maybe people who have the same experience, yet have very different hair textures.
I always have short hairs sticking up here and there and they're not limited to the top, sides, back, middle and I also know that I don't have a problem with breakage.
The only thing I'm sure of is that hair grows constantly. Our scalps are constantly shedding hair and new hairs grow in their places. So even if someone's hair looks like absolute perfection, you'll still see the shorties popping here and there and the thicker your hair is (density wise) the more noticeable those hairs will be.
Not saying that everyone has a breakage problem because they very well could, it's just that none of us will ever have a head of hair that's 100% all the same perfect length simply because of the hair's growth cycle.
